Gliese 581g in 'Goldilocks zone' of space where liquid water could exist is strong contender for a habitable world

Astronomers have discovered a potentially habitable planet of similar size to Earth in orbit around a nearby star.

A team of planet hunters spotted the alien world circling a red dwarf star called Gliese 581, 20 light years away.

The planet is in the "Goldilocks zone" of space around a star where surface temperatures are neither too hot nor too cold for liquid water to form.

"Our findings offer a very compelling case for a potentially habitable planet," said Steven Vogt, an astronomer at the University of California, Santa Cruz. "The fact that we were able to detect this planet so quickly and so nearby tells us that planets like this must be really common."

If confirmed, the planet would be the most Earth-like that has ever been discovered in another solar system and the first strong contender for a habitable one.

More than 400 exoplanets have been discovered by astronomers, but most are gas giants, like Jupiter, that would be inhospitable to life as we know it.

Astronomers used the Keck telescope in Hawaii to study the movement of Gliese 581 in exquisite detail and from their observations inferred the presence of a number of orbiting planets. The team report two new planets in the Astrophysical Journal, bringing the total number known to be circling the star to six.

One of the planets, named Gliese 581g, has a mass of three to four times that of Earth and takes 37 days to orbit the star. Astronomers believe it is a rocky planet with enough gravity to retain an atmosphere.

Unlike the previously discovered planets, Gliese 581g lies squarely in the region of space were life can thrive. "We had planets on both sides of the habitable zone — one too hot and one too cold — and now we have one in the middle that's just right," Vogt said.

One side of the planet is always facing the star, much as one side of the moon constantly faces Earth. This means that the far side of the planet is constantly in darkness. The most habitable region of the planet would be the line between the light and dark regions.

"Any emerging life forms would have a wide range of stable climates to choose from and to evolve around, depending on their longitude," Vogt said.

The average temperature on the planet is estimated to be between -31 to -12C, but the ground temperature would vary from blazing hot on the bright side and freezing on the dark side.

"The number of systems with potentially habitable planets is probably on the order of 10 or 20 percent, and when you multiply that by the hundreds of billions of stars in the Milky Way, that's a large number. There could be tens of billions of these systems in our galaxy," said Vogt.

And Dude I would say that I am as convinces as you are not that there is indeed global warming, and that the world is overpopulated with humans, and that the natural world looks a lot more like that depicted in the movie Soylent Green then it used to actually be like when that film was made in the early 1970s.

Well Chop, I am against abortion and genocide toward any end; including population reduction.

I do support abstinence and reasonable means to control population numbers that have man and womankind live within their means on this planet that has a finite niche for our species.

A species that has an obligation to protect the sanctity of all life on this blue bubble of a planet we all on some level love so much.

I have put my life in jeopardy for what I believe in, and not just in trees as I was in the U.S. Army for nine years on active duty. I do not believe in suicide.

Part of the responsibility not to be selfish and off oneself is very tangible. suicide triggers others to opt to do the same. I never want to do anything that would harm someone else outside of reasonable defense of oneself or of others in unwarranted danger due to the insane and aggressive acts of another.

Define "reasonable" Mike, and tell me who gets to decide what "reasonable" is.

The problem with your statement is the word "control". How will it be "controlled"? Shall the government decide who can and who cannot have children, how many they can have, and of which sex?

A species that has an obligation to protect the sanctity of all life on this blue bubble of a planet....

Well, that's not you Mike. You've already explained that you believe the earth comes first, ahead of all life, even human life. Life comes in a poor second place to you. You believe, what was it you said, "EARTH FIRST".

There can only be one "first" Mike. If earth is first, life is second to you, or lower.

Well Chop, I am against abortion and genocide toward any end; including population reduction.

Genocide could also be not allowing people in certain areas, or people of certain ethnic make-ups, to reproduce. It just TAKES A GENERATION or two to become effective.

Population "control" IS genocide.

You don't want to have kids so you can "save the earth?" Great. Don't have any.

"Population "control" IS genocide."

You also hate budgeting too do you? No brakes on growth of numbers is the ethical creed of the cancer cell. We are not here merely to breed like lemmings until all socio-political-economic structure of humanity everywhere is ripped apart and the ensuing chaos takes care of the population excess for us.

Humans are one of the most intelligent species on the planet and certainly the most systematically violent, greedy and inconsiderate of everything around them.

Other living things do not merely exist to be instrumentalized into capital.

How we treat other life defines how we in truth feel about ourselves. My view is far more caring about human life in that we are defined not just by being, but by our actions and how we put our expressed beliefs into practice.

Kennedy said in his Inaugural Address, "If a free society cannot help the many who are poor, it cannot save the few who are rich."

By extension, if we can't preserve and save and help the biodiversity of the web of life on this planet, we cannot save ourselves, the one species that has made it wealthy beyond all historic measure compared to other species of life.

Earth First! and the philosophy of deep ecology that postulates that all life has a right to exist for the value it has unto itself is one that deeply cares about human life. By advocating our species to mature enough to recognize this undeniable truth, we advocate for our species and show a deep and abiding love and respect for it.

We care enough to say to our species to wake up, grow up and be responsible. Because as in the end, on the course you like to see us on leads us all to destruction and chaos, and even possibly our own extinction.

My answer is quite appropriate to your framework of cross examination not meant to arrive at any truth. You seek merely to put me on the defensive. And you seek to do that, because deep down inside you know I am right. This scares you subconsiously and you don't want truth; you can't handle it at all.

But you like any deficit spender hopes the species never will run off the cliff into the ocean to drown. Stick to denial if you wish dude.

I know what I stand for, I stand for what I stand on. And what I stand on is comprised of all living things, including our species.

Maybe that's why you CAN'T give a straight answer to a straight question.

I really think you ought to have a doctor look at your head for damage, but I'm not going to force you into doing it.

A few interesting points:

Gliese 581 is a red dwarf star.

Red Dwarfs comprise 80% of the stars in our galaxy and they last much longer than our Yellow Sun.

Because it's a Red Dwarf, any plants on Gliese 581g won't be green. They will be black!

There is another planet orbiting Gliese 581 that may also contain life. It is a little to far from the habitable zone (kind of like Mars), BUT if the atmosphere contains significant "green house gases" it could be warm enough to have liquid water.

This is the most interesting solar system we've seen, and there is a lot more to come in the next year as Kepler starts reporting on its initial findings.

"I really think you ought to have a doctor look at your head for damage, but I'm not going to force you into doing it."

Actually, I was in the VA facility in Vancouver, WA for some months rehabilitating from the fall. Scans showed minor impact lesions in a line from my right frontal lobe through to my left parietal lobe. The brain is colloidal, much as a hard boiled egg or jello is.

Most brain damage is caused by twisting impacts. Torsional impacts rip the white and gray matter asunder. I knew this from my study of brain structure of human, whale and dolphin brains.

So when I lost grip and started to pivot to the ground unable to pull my gaffs from the bark, I used a lot of discipline to make my impact a straight one. I absorbed most of the impact in my arms and hands.

I needed bone from my pelvic girdle to repair all four of my lower arm bones, and have plates and screws om my wrists and arms. I have lots of scars, and my wrists do not have the range of motion they once did.

I used to touch type; now I'm doing this typing at half the speed using fewer fingers. The doctors told me it was miraculous I survived a three story fall to the pavement, and all concurred I would be a vegetable or dead had I impacted my head with any twist whatsoever.

Knowledge from my curiosity and education coupled with my discipline from nine years in the U.S. Army saved my bacon. I had an absolutely incredible experiance while in a coma.

I felt myself pull from me from the abdomen area and floated upward. I approached a light I very much remember communicating with. I remember being directed to look down when querying what was going on and being shocked profoundly to see my body noticing how it was not a mirror reverse image, saw the tubes, black eyes, swollen nose, bandaged arms - all looking exactly like they did then as when I woke up.

I remember being kept from coming too close to the light and understanding that at my level of being I would be absorbed if I did. I remember being told I could leave or stay.

I don't remember my answer, but I assume my waking up meant I chose to stay. I would say this out of body experience is the one single thing that had forever changed my life.

I seem to have lost much fear of death. I am certain beyond measure I will be here when my body isn't. And I don't sweat as much of the small stuff I used to.

People do tell me personality-wise I am quite different. But the consensus is generally I went from being an arrogant prick in some regards to being far more patient, empathetic and easier to know.

As I am not as able to judge not having anymore all of the point of reference of where I was before falling, I cannot really test this judgment. I just note that everyone who knew me before all agree on the same points of order about me.

I have all the intellectual capacity I had before. As the parietal lobe affected by a lesion was the one dealing with language, have a slight stutter when tired. I had to relearn how to pronounce some words like serendipity form example. For a while I couldn't say it to save my life.

My speech therapist kicked me out early might add. He in a word told me I have an incredible capacity for language, and that if I lost any, still had far more then any other patient he has dealt with.

I am very grateful for still being alive. I take it extremely seriously. I stopped all cannabis smoking after the fall. I had already not drank alcohol since leaving the Army the last time in 1980, but have not touched a drop since my fall. I eat well and exercise and am fit well beyond must of my 56 year old peers.

I take to heart I had an injury, and further injury is cumulative, and avoid it passionately. You seem interested, and I actually like you despite any disagreements we have politically, so I have expounded on this event in my life in a bloglike way. Apologies if it is long and detailed.

But suffice it to say, I love passionately to write, and this was a very major event in my life.

Since the fall I don't delve into wasted endeavors like thinking of revenge and how to get back at people. I am more generous and when - for example - I am done with a computer I built up from parts I look for a person needing one who can't afford it and give it to them.

It's autumn, and I have my older neighbors I rake the leave for and I am a volunteer front desk person at White Bird Clinic.

When I die, I don't want to die with lots of toys. I want the wealth far more intangible then that; I want the accumulated riches that are only garnered by helping others.

I wouldn't fret; I know what happened and to what degree. And I have worked out the op order for continuing my existence on this planet reasonably well.

Though some of the annexes of it could stand some polishing.

I had answered the other part of your post then lost the browser session and will deal with it later as I do have thought to share on it.

I'll do that on the morrow though.

So how'd the tree fare?

You confuse the macro with the micro, I don't. I see all life as having connection and bond to it. By caring about the health of the scope and depth of life on the big picture, one does the most to enhance the protection of individuals when you zoom into the individuals that are part of the life force of this planet.

It is hard to articulate in short form all of the whys and aspects of my belief system. I am a long time devotee to the teachings of Dr. John C. Lilly and have always had a passion for not only his work, but that of Audoux Huxley, Timothy Leary, and other people dealing with consciousness and concepts of the organization of reality on our plane of existence and beyond it.

From my perspective I see everyone as part of the planet and part of all life. I am not at all Christian and never have been a believer in that faith, and do not consider humans as the highest life form created concisely in the image of a creator. I see most organized religion as being primarily involved with social control, and as having a poor grasp on the bigger picture of what life is.

But as I said, I'll deal with my thoughts on this tomorrow when I actually have more time to. I have my girlfriend talking to me explaining her day, and if I don't pay at least half my attention on her, I'll be wearing this laptop.

The tree? It's doing quite poorly and will be dead soon. When they built the Nike Store, they destroyed approx. forty percent of the roots. The surviving big leaf maple has the same problem and will be dead soon.

The Nike Store has moved, and Owner Brian Obie is adding three stories to this building and turning it into a hotel.

The Incense cedar has not grown any since the construction started, and it's once luxurious canopy of green is sparse, with huge gaps in it. IF it were a human, one would assume said individual was undergoing rigorous chemotherapy.

I had originally intended on a defense of one of the four trees removed for this building. But while I was on my way from the Clark Creek Timber sale where I had been living in a 600 year old Douglas Fir in the Red Cloud Thunder tree- sit to switch gears to do urban forest defense, the powers that be's intelligence gathering informed them something was happening, and they hurriedly dropped the four trees in the building's footprint.

I had climbed the cedar with solely the intent to hang a banner and establish an aerial presence for the demonstration planned the next day. As they had dropped the four target trees, I canceled the diversion and made a frontal attack on the tree on a bicycle initiating the climb with gaffs and lanyards.

I am experienced in conventional climbing and had worked in the woods with standard gear, as I have explosive training and would remove the tops of live trees with gel packs to make wildlife snags to replace those that logging removed too many of before study of the forest revealed how important they were.

I also have taken trees down doing conventional tree service and have done commercial and pre-commercial thinning - as well as using my chainsaws to cut fire trail as a sawyer doing wild land firefighting.

Unfortunately, the meat head who cost his company's insurance a large out of court settlement to me aggressively interdicted me. I was forced to jettison my primary gear he has compromised my control of, forcing me to go to my backup contingency climbing harness and soft lanyards without the steel cores.

I managed to achieve the canopy, but the branches of an incense cedar are much like the drain pipes under a sink dropping radically down from where they are attached to the trunk.

I was too stubborn, climbed too high, got too fatigued. I jettisoned my ruck and all extraneous gear and told the security guard and my ground support I was going to fall and to get the fire department to respond.

The just out of high school football jock of a guard mocked me and did not respond to my request quickly, doing so only after a fist fight for his phone by my ground support.

Then the protocol of response was to get police there before sending the FD as they wanted to see if the protester presence posed a threat to the firemen.

Sean McGain, a cop got there sooner then the cops dispatch - you know how curious cops are. He saved my life.

He saw the construction fence segmented immediately below me would break me in half if I hit them. He told the guards to pull the fence away from below me. After they refused, he ordered them telling them they would be going to jail if they did not comply; they did.

He encouraged me to hang on, and I could hear the beeps of the doors rising at the fire house two blocks away. He had gotten them to respond earlier, thus they arrived on the scene fast enough to save my life.

I remember my bicycle gloved hands slowly pulling apart, and calming myself preparing to pull feet free to try for a parachute landing fall.

But I was too tired and I pivoted like a hinge. I fought panic and concentrated on maintaining a strict line of impact.

I don't at all remember the impact, but briefly woke, smelled my blood, and was aware of a board under me and a collar on my neck. I could feel them tying my head and tried to get up.

I remember then shouting at me to stay calm and to not move. I defaulted to thinking I had been hit by a car while bike riding and I started asking how the bike was, and then I remember waking with my Mom and girlfriend dozing in chairs next to me.

I remember when waking thinking I was waking up in the morning after a night's sleep, then I opened my eyes and recognized the hospital environs, the our of body, and as I was tied to keep my arms stationary shaking Mom awake with my foot on her knee, and immediately ordering her to untie me.

The Nurse came in, asked the battery of questions they ask someone coming out of a coma. "What day is it? Who's the President? WHere are you? What is your name" etc.etc.I remembered them telling me to relax, take it easy, and escaping two hours later to the bicycle shop on E13th St. I'm a hard person to get to do as you tell me to do. And I hate being poked and prodded by doctors. shop was only a short walk away. Of course they found me. I'm well known to be drawn to anything bicycle, and my friends worked there. The took me back insisting I ride in a damn wheelchair like I was some kind of invalid or something.

It's kinda the way I am. Stubborn and unwilling to give up if I decide I'm going to do something.

Yeah, whatever Mike.

You still put human life second, earth first.

Oh, and you'll find "sympathy" right between "shit" and "syphilis" in the dictionary.

"Oh, and you'll find "sympathy" right between "shit" and "syphilis" in the dictionary."

Heh, Sympathy? Sympathy? I don't need no stinking sympathy. You perceive wrongly. I know what forum I'm in and whom I speak to. It I expected sympathy, I'd have to be out of my gourd.

Frankly I'm surprised you would think I'd fish for something I loathe so deeply. I am first and foremost deeply independent and do not care for sympathy.

It makes me feel creepy and uncomfortable to experience it.

In fact, had I died, I would of been a martyr with every asshole and his brother putting words in my mouth. A martyr is someone who dies. When someone like me lives to argue and disagree with others in the activist community, you get what I got:

People pissed off when I told them they fucked up in some of the things they did while I was hospitalized. I never pandered to anybody to milk any part of the situation. That is also part of my nature.

I say what I think, which is why exactly why I was doing activism and didn't become a politician. I just expect your honest opinion, and am fine with agreeing to diagree.

Anyone lying and agreeing just to manipulate me will always run afoul of my radar and get nothing but scorn from me.
