A massive, smoky fire underneath a bridge that carries trains over the Harlem River halted all Metro-North traffic in and out of the city Monday afternoon, officials said. "At this point, there is no service into or out of Grand Central," said spokesman Sam Zambuto.
The blaze broke out around 11:40 a.m. in wooden pilings underneath the rail bridge that carries all Metro-North's trains from Manhattan to the Bronx at 138th St.
"We don't have a cause of the fire at this point," Zambuto said.
No injuries have been reported.
Fire boats furiously sprayed water over the pilings that protect the bridge - which is designed to pivot to allow boats to pass - from possibly being struck by vessels.
Trains heading north were being held in Grand Central Terminal while southbound trains were being held in the Bronx.
How the fire will affect Monday evening's commute is unclear.
"We are probably going to be implementing shuttle service," said Metro-North spokeswoman Marjorie Enders.
