CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) -- An official says General Motors is recalling about 400 idled union workers to its Spring Hill plant in Tennessee to build a four-cylinder engine.

An official briefed about the new jobs who declined to be identified because an announcement is pending provided the count to The Associated Press on Tuesday.

GM spokeswoman Sherrie Childers Arb said a media advisory would be forthcoming about a Friday announcement about Spring Hill but she declined further comment.

The Detroit Free Press first reported the decision citing an anonymous source.

GM laid off about 2,000 workers at Spring Hill last year. About 800 of those workers have relocated to GM plants in other states.

Southeast Michigan employers to cut 420 jobs in coming weeks, WARN notices show By Chad Halcom Rated by 1 person Rate This Advertisement

Nine Michigan private sector employers will shed a combined 863 jobs in the coming weeks, including 420 jobs at five employers in Southeast Michigan, according to new data for plant closings and layoff notices from the state Department of Energy, Labor and Economic Growth.

The DELEG Rapid Response Section reported five notices statewide during August of pending plant closings or plant layoffs, under the federal Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act.

That’s compared with three WARN Act notices affecting fewer than 100 employees in July.

The August layoff notices include 285 jobs to be eliminated by October for Auburn Hills-based photovoltaic solar cells maker United Solar Ovonic LLC, a subsidiary of Energy Conversion Devices Inc. in Rochester Hills. It was the region’s largest layoff notice, second only to the Aug. 30 notice that General Motors Co. would cut 330 jobs upon closing its Powertrain Flint North plant in November.

The federal act requires companies with more than 100 employees to file notice with state and local governments 60 days in advance of plant or building closures or layoffs that affect more than 50 employees.

The agency did receive other reports of 159 lost jobs in March among five employers outside of the traditional WARN Act notification process.

These generally come by way of phone calls, media reports or notices forwarded to Rapid Response from the Michigan Works Agency or other agencies. Government employers and some nonprofits are exempt from the federal law.

Other August layoffs and plant closings in the region, according to DELEG, include:

• Detroit-based Evans Solution Inc., a charter schools management company, which shed 25 jobs effective Aug. 12.

• BAE Systems Inc., a defense contractor with operations in Sterling Heights, to shed 10 jobs from its Global Tactical Systems division by late October.

• The Omni Detroit Hotel at River Place, which could close by Oct. 12 if the Irving, Texas-based hotel chain that owns it cannot close on a sale to a potential buyer by then. A closure would eliminate 76 local jobs according to DELEG.

• A Dearborn office of human resources, payroll and benefits manager Automatic Data Processing Inc., which is scheduled to close in September and eliminate 24 local jobs.

Chuckles...you love rooting against the economy.

Why not just come out and admit you're voting a straight GOP ticket?
