KABUL—The top U.S. commander in Afghanistan said the planned burning of Qurans on Sept. 11 by a Florida church could put the lives of American troops in danger and damage the war effort.

Gen. David Petraeus said the Taliban would exploit the demonstration for propaganda purposes, drumming up anger toward the U.S. and making it harder for allied troops to carry out their mission of protecting Afghan civilians.

"It could endanger troops and it could endanger the overall effort," Gen. Petraeus said in an interview with The Wall Street Journal. "It is precisely the kind of action the Taliban uses and could cause significant problems. Not just here, but everywhere in the world we are engaged with the Islamic community."

Gen. David Petraeus said the planned burning of Qurans on Sept. 11 by a Florida church could put the lives of American troops in danger.

Hundreds of Afghans attended a demonstration in Kabul on Monday to protest the plans of Florida pastor Terry Jones, who has said he will burn the Quran on Sept. 11.

Afghan protesters chanted "death to America" and speakers called on the U.S. to withdraw its military convoy. Some of the protesters threw rocks at a passing military convoy, although officials told the rock-throwers to stop.

Military officials fear the protests are likely to spread beyond Kabul to other Afghan cities. In interviews with various media outlets, Mr. Jones has denied his protest will put troops in danger. Mr. Jones has been denied a permit for the demonstration but has said he plans to go forward with the his protest anyway.

With all due respect, General, I disagree.

Butting our freaking noses into other countries internal business puts our troops in danger.

The right of a church here in the US (whether or not you agree with their action) to do what it wants has noting to do with it.

It seems like men (and I use the word loosely), have lost any balls they had, and women are growing them. You general, and a few others, should GET OUT, and let the women take the wheel, they do the things all you men(?) only promised to do, then once you're in command, you start with the cowardly compromising, spinning and backpaddling~

Lieutenant-Colonel McSally had long complained that although she was allowed to fly fighter jets off-base in Saudi Arabia to patrol the sky over Iraq, she could not drive a car.

Saudi Arabia is a long-standing ally of the USA

"I can fly a single-seat aircraft in enemy territory, but I can't drive a vehicle," she said on a recent CBS 60 Minutes television show.

"And then I have to sit in the back and at all times I must be escorted by a male... that, when questioned, is supposed to claim me as his wife," she added.

But she finally decided to sue the US Defence Secretary, Donald Rumsfeld, over the Pentagon's strict dress code for women stationed in the country.

She alleged the rule was a case of gender discrimination because the Pentagon was not asking US male soldiers to dress like Saudi men outside their base.

A memo from US Central Command announcing the new rules also told local US commanders in the region to reverse any policies or regulations that civilian clothing be worn to cover American military uniforms.
