She told San Francisco's KCBS radio: AUDIO "There is no question there is a concerted effort to make this a political issue by some. And I join those who have called for looking into how is this opposition to the mosque being funded," she said. "How is this being ginned up that here we are talking about Treasure Island, something we've been working on for decades, something of great interest to our community as we go forward to an election about the future of our country and two of the first three questions are about a zoning issue in New York City." (h/t Kristinn) Calls to investigate the funding for those proposing the $100 million "Cordoba House" have fallen on deaf ears, though, as New York's Mayor Mike Bloomberg has described such an investigation as "un-American." Ms. Pelosi called the Ground Zero mosque an "urban development decision" for New Yorkers to work through. Her remarks happened on the heels of Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, Nevada Democrat, parting ways with President Barack Obama on the issue. To the extent that it is a religion I say fine - our motto should be "live and let live." To the extent Islam is a political movement, we need as a society to decide how we want to deal with it. The "political correct" thing is not working. The so-called "war on terrorism" that Bush declared (not in the Constitutional sense) and that Zero is continuing is bullshit. You cannot use "political correct" methods to WIN a war. "Wars" assume there are victors and losers. If the US is going to declare a WAR, it had better decide it wants to WIN it before it sends young people to fight and die in foreign lands. If we're not going to WIN it, let's just declare defeat and get the hell out of it. The Temple Mount (Heb., Har Habayit; Arabic, Haram esh-Sharif, the Noble Sanctuary),is identified in both Jewish and Islamic tradition as the area of Mount Moriah where Abraham offered up his son in sacrifice (Genesis 22:1-18; the Koran, Sura Al-Saffat 37:102-110). Here King Solomon built the First Temple almost 3,000 years ago. It was destroyed by the Babylonians in 586 BCE, but 70 years later Jews returning from exile built the Second Temple on the same site. King Herod refashioned it into an edifice of great splendor. In Muslim tradition, the place is also identified as the "furthermost sanctuary" (Arabic, masjid al-aksa) from which the Prophet Mohammed, accompanied by the Angel Gabriel, made the Night Journey to the Throne of God (The Koran, Sura Al-Isra’ 17:1). Following the destruction of Jerusalem by the Romans in the year 70, the area of the Temple was deliberately left in ruins (first by the Romans, then by the Byzantines). This desecration was not redressed until the Muslim conquest of the city by the Caliph Omar ibn al-Khattab in 638. He ordered the clearing of the site and the building of a "house of prayer". Some 50 years later, the Umayyad Caliph Abd al-Malik built the Dome of the Rock to enshrine the outcrop of bedrock believed to be the "place of the sacrifice" on Mount Moriah. He (or his son, the Caliph al-Walid I) also built the large mosque at the southern end of the Haram, which came to be called al-Aksa after the Koranic name attributed to the entire area. The Dome of the Rock (Arabic, Qubbat al-Sakhra) is one of the architectural glories of the world, and the only early Islamic sanctuary to have survived intact. The design of the building is basically Byzantine - double octagonal ambulatories encircling the Holy Rock. In fact, we so much didn't care about offending Japanese that we dropped two nukes on them. Sorry if this sounds harsh, but war IS harsh. We didn't seem to learn our lesson in Korea or Vietnam (i.e. fighting undeclared wars with our hands figuratively tied behind our backs) is NO way to prevail. Or, perhaps we DID learn (but that's a subject for another time). I'm not a rabid Bush hater like some on here are - but I do believe he had no business declaring this bogus "war on Terra (terror)" Too many politicians are all for "declaring war" on this or that - without realizing exactly what that means - or should mean. I'm so damn tired of our sending our troops hither and yon on these fools errands. If were going to REALLY declare war - then do what it takes to win the damn thing, and win it quickly.
