Bush Wars Title: Will military cut and run' on homosexual issue? - the men behind the military's Oz-like "curtain" are not men at all but scared little boys and girls Will military cut and run' on homosexual issue? Is the military about to "cut and run" over the issue of allowing open homosexuals to serve in our Armed Forces? The answer is "yes." More correctly, military leaders and those charged with the oversight of the military are about to cut and run. When it comes to dealing with controversial issues, the men behind the military's Oz-like "curtain" are not men at all but scared little boys and girls when it comes to standing up to narrow, vocal special-interest groups – especially those that are the darlings of the mainstream media. When the Center for the Study of Sexual Minorities in the Military – now there is a narrow special-interest group if ever there was one – uncovered a Pentagon document titled a "Defense Department Instruction" that classified homosexuality as a "mental disorder," the sound of backpedaling could be heard throughout the nation's capital. In outlining discharge policies, this document simply listed homosexuality alongside other mental and personality disorders as a reason for discharge, but it is being used as a club by gay-rights activists. Pentagon spokesman Lt. Col. Jeremy M. Martin says the policy document is "under review." Congress members were pointing to the military's mental health regulations that never mention the "h" word and some have written to Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld asking for a full review of all documents and policies to ensure they reflect that same standard. Our leader have no trouble standing up to John Murtha and Democrat Party heavyweights, but when it comes to a few feminists or militant homosexuals, they scurry for cover. That is precisely why we now have women serving in combat zones against military regulations. That is precisely why we have an untenable cornucopia of laws and regulations on sexual orientation and domestic partnerships. That is precisely why we still have President Clinton's "don't ask, don't tell" policy. And, that is why this bad situation is about to get worse. James H. Scully Jr., head of the American Psychiatric Association, tried to shame the military's top doc with this statement: "Based on scientific and medical evidence, the APA declassified homosexuality as a mental disorder in 1973 – a position shared by all other major health and mental health organizations based on their own review of the science." Nothing could be further from the truth. In 1973, the APA caved from pure political pressure from within and from external pressure exerted at its annual meetings by the Gay Liberation Front. The APA simply took the easy way out. There was no gay gene or other scientific evidence discovered to prove that men and women in the gay lifestyle are born that way and can't change. In fact, the sheer volume of evidence presented by the National Association for the Research and Therapy of Homosexuality, or NARTH, is in sharp contrast to this generally accepted myth. Four years after the APA surrender, a survey in the journal Medical Aspects of Human Sexuality showed that 69 percent of psychiatrists disagreed with the vote and still considered homosexuality a disorder. NARTH is composed of many APA members highly critical of the APA's politically correct stance. Psychiatrist Jeffrey Satinover, a recognized expert in the fields of medicine and law, gives the details of the APA's cave-in in a paper titled "Trojan Couch: How the Mental Health Guilds Allow Medical Diagnostics, Scientific Research and Jurisprudence to be Subverted in Lockstep with the Political Aims of their Gay Sub-Components." This should be required reading for our commander in chief, jurists, lawmakers and the joint chiefs of the military. Satinover explains that, in the nutty, unscientific, politically correct, narrow view of the guilds, it is now considered a disorder "for one to wish that the way he expresses his instincts be in concord with the physical organs that do the expressing – as though a fish who thinks itself a bird should be thought ill for hoping one day to be happy in the water." The growth of ex-gay organizations supports the evidence provided by NARTH. Their members stand as living proof that homosexuals can and do change. Those who serve in the military put themselves in harm's way. They are prepared to die and suffer wounds and many hardships to ensure that our country remains secure. They must give up many creature comforts and live communally. In such situations, our service men and women should not have to worry about being viewed as objects of sexual desire. That is one worry that can be prevented! It is time that we demand that our commander in chief and our representatives in Congress stand up to these guilds that have misled the public and misled the courts.
