Title: It's been four years since Bush was responsible for economic policy

It's been four years since President George W. Bush could be held responsible for the nation's economy, Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) said Monday evening.

DeMint dismissed a key part of Democrats' midterm messaging — warning voters against a return to Bush-era policies — reasoning that Democrats have been controlling U.S. economic policies during the past four years in which they've controlled Congress.

"The president [Obama] keeps saying he inherited this, but the fact is that it's been four years since President Bush had anything to do with economic policy," DeMint said during an appearance on WVOC radio in South Carolina.

The South Carolina conservative sought to rebut an argument advanced by Democrats from President Obama on down in recent months: Returning Republicans to power in Congress would mean a return to some of the policies voters found less popular during the Bush administration.

"The policies that crashed the economy, that undercut the middle class, that mortgaged our future, do we really want to go back to that, or do we keep moving our country forward?" Obama said Monday at a Democratic fundraiser, part of a sustained effort to hammer away at Bush.

DeMint said, though, that some of the bills voters find most distasteful had been advanced during the past four years, after Democrats won back control of the House and Senate from Republicans in the 2006 elections.

"The Democrats have been in control of both houses of Congress for four years now. Congress writes economic policy; they spend the money," he said. "So it was the Democrat Congress that wrote the TARP bailout, they did the stimulus, they did the 'Cash for Clunkers.' They have done the healthcare, the financial bill. This is an unchecked Democratic agenda."

Good post. People always want to excuse the horrid legislation passed by the DEMOCRATICALLY controlled congress which helped get us into this mess.

Pelosi, Reid, Obama, Bush, Clinton. All share blame.

Being a Democratic shill means you check your humanity at the door.

The Left and this administration have used this to hide behind for almost two years now, the Pelosi led congress for almost four years.

Its not working, in fact its becoming increasingly clear its counter productive politically.

This is the Democrats economy, folks. It SUCKS. And its getting worse. Next year is going to be even uglier than this year has been to date, and I don't believe we've seen the worst of 2010 economically yet.

I can see November from my house....

Obama's first all-by-his-lonesome budget, btw, calls for a $1.17 trillion deficit.

Only if they are the only party can they have any effect .

That said, the fault is rightly laid squarely at the feet of the occupant in the Oval Office in 2005 when the seeds of the bubble were sown...and 2006 when the first conduit failed and 2007 when it was apparent that the Compttoller of the Currency was in total abdication of his duties.

Jerry Ford vetoed more bills in his short time in office than Bush did in his entire 8 years in office.

Bush created the aweful spending in his first term. In his second term he gave us TARP. The GOP butt lickers love the Bush family. They salivate over the idea that Jeb may get into the 2012 race. It's kind of like a low budget version of the Kennedys

In Reagan's defense, Carter basically gutted defense during his administration, so he had to play catch up against the USSR. Spending jumped, but then so did tax revenue jump as well.

I was in the Air Force during the last two years of Carter and first two years of Reagan. Yep, Carter nearly destroyed the military through neglect. We had planes that couldn't fly because we couldn't get spare parts. Our measly paychecks were held up because Carter vetoed small raises that Congress passed. Base after base was failing readiness inspections. People who wanted to make a career of the military got frustrated and left after 8, 10 and 12 years. It was unbelievable. Reagan fixed it all, very quickly.

Still, Reagan didn't make much of an effort to cut domestic spending. This is what pissed off people like David Stockman.

Unfortunately, the big mouths on the TV and radio like Hannity haven't changed their tune. All they do is talk about stinking Bush. It's surreal to me.

I cast my first vote in 1980. I voted for Reagan. I voted for Reagan again in 84 even though I was unhappy that he didn't try harder to rein in domestic spending.

I did NOT vote for Bush in 1988 because I knew he wasn't Reagan's "heir apparent" as was being claimed at the time. He wound up being a miserable failure. I supported Jack Kemp in 1988 primary and then I voted for Ron Paul (LP candidate) in the general election.

There ya go, Lucy - from a guy who was there.

I was at Pope Air Force base -- right next to Fort Bragg. We were responsible for moving the 82nd Airborne, Green Berets, Army Rangers, and some black ops troops. It was an important base to the national security of the country.

We had 3 squadrons of C-130s. We had to gut one of the squadrons to keep the other two in the air because we didn't have the money to get spare parts. We were on the brink of not being able to keep the second squadron in the air.

Base after base was failing their inspections. We were next to get inspected. At the last minute, Carter's Secretary of Defense cancelled our inspection because they knew we would fail and they didn't want any more heat from the DEMOCRATIC Congress.

Remember, this was during the Iranian hostage crisis.

Someone leaked all of this to Jack Anderson (he was literally the "Walter Cronkite" (trusted source) of the print media back then). Anderson wrote a column about it, featuring Pope AFB. All hell broke loose.

A few months later, Reagan won in a landslide. Thank god for that.

I was there. I remember all this just like it was yesterday.
