Congressman Ron Paul of Texas doesn't mince words. On the subject of illegal immigration he said emphatically, "One important solution is better enforcement of the laws we've got - which plainly call for illegal immigrants to be arrested and deported." He makes clear his position that the responsibility of immigration enforcement is the job of the President, not the Congress. In 2005, Paul wrote: "The ultimate responsibility for our immigration mess, therefore, lies squarely with successive presidents, not Congress. For decades our chief executives simply have lacked the political will, the manpower, or the desire to police our borders and deport lawbreakers. It's been nearly impossible politically for presidents or candidates to suggest the obvious, namely that illegal immigration mocks the rule of law and creates huge social and economic problems. But the tide is turning, and a majority of Americans will demand real action on immigration by the next administration." These words seem prophetic in light of the current national debate over Arizona's controversial immigration law. Ron Paul has repeatedly taken firm stands on the subject of illegal immigration. For example, at the GOP Presidential Forum at Morgan State University, Paul said that he will not support any bill that provides amnesty to illegal aliens. "We have to stick to our guns on obeying the law, and anybody who comes in here illegally shouldn't be rewarded." While the illegal immigration issue is complex, Representative Paul has outlined his solution in three steps. First, existing immigration laws must be enforced by the President and our borders must be secured once and for all. Paul said, "We must recognize that true national defense means defending our own borders and coastlines. This is the primary constitutional responsibility of the federal government. This means it's time to stop spending hundreds of billions of dollars on overseas military adventures and countless alphabet soup domestic agencies. Borders should be the number one national priority, plain and simple. Does the federal government have something better to do?" Second, birthright citizenship must be ended by amending the US Constitution. In 1868, the United States adopted the 14th Amendment to the Constitution which states, in part: "All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside." The original intent of this amendment was to overrule the Supreme Court's Dred Scott decision which denied blacks the privileges of citizenship. However, from the beginning the scope and meaning of the amendment generated much debate. Many members of Congress, including the author of the 14th Amendment's Citizenship Clause, Senator Jacob Howard, described the amendment as approvingly excluding certain groups such as American Indians who maintained their tribal ties. In 1988, while running as the Presidential nominee of the Libertarian Party, Ron Paul said, "there shouldn't be any immigration policy at all. We should welcome everyone who wants to come here and work." He was asked about this quote on Meet the Press during his second presidential run. Paul explained: "During that campaign I got into trouble with Libertarians because I said there may well be a time when immigration is like an invasion and we have to treat it differently. My approach to immigration is somewhat different than the others. Mine is you deal with it economically. We're in worse shape now because we subsidize immigration. We give food stamps, Social Security, free medical care, free education and amnesty. So you subsidize it, and you have a mess. Conditions have changed. And I think this means that we should look at immigration differently. It's an economic issue more than anything. If our economy was in good health, I don't think there'd be an immigration problem. We'd be looking for workers and we would be very generous." Today, when an illegal immigrant sneaks across the border and has a child, that child is automatically granted all the rights and privileges of any other US citizen, including access to social welfare programs such as food stamps, housing benefits, free education and medical care. Ron Paul opposes birthright citizenship to illegal immigrants as is permitted under the 14th Amendment. Paul introduced House Joint Resolution 46 in an attempt to begin the process of changing the 14th Amendment, with the following explanation: "As long as illegal immigrants know that their children born here will be citizens, the perverse incentive to sneak into this country remains strong. Citizenship involves more than the mere location of one's birth. True citizenship requires cultural connections and an allegiance to the United States. Americans are happy to welcome those who wish to come here and build a better life for themselves, but we rightfully expect immigrants to show loyalty and attempt to assimilate themselves culturally. Birthright citizenship sometimes confers the benefits of being American on people who do not truly embrace America."

The first step is to prevent them from entering the country in the first place. Without sufficient border controls, deporting people does nothing more than put them on a merry-go-round which will bring them right back. We need to secure the border and then we can figure out how to deal with the 10 million illegals who are already here.
Figure out what to do with them. Deport them!!
A.) We do that all of the time, and they come right back. It's a futile effort until the border is secure. B.) There is no way to deport 10 million people. It can't be done without turning the country into a police state. #1. We have to secure the border, to prevent more illegals from getting in. #2. We have to come up with a rational and reasonable plan for the 10 million who are already here, instead of just spouting cheap, emotional slogans which can't possibly be implemented.
You would upset the landlords of this country who were depending on collecting rents as part of their business income and retirement. You would hurt the construction industry who are intent on overbuilding in perpetuity thereby keeping many of those same illegals employed and housed at the same time. You would hurt the auto industry, whose going to buy all those Escalades? You would hurt Walmart and Kmart among millions of other businesses. It's the economy uber alles and the capitalists run the show.

How do you know it's not 30 million? Any plan is going to hurt someone. We need to man up and just take the medicine. But first we need to get rid of NAFTA. So businesses and jobs in Mexico can return to their previous natural order, instead of being concentrated at the border and along corridors.

Why should it hurt me? I haven't broken any immigration laws. Why should I be forced give the government my fingerprints and DNA (which is what Lindsey Graham and many others are advocating)? WHY??? I'll tell you why. Because this is nothing more than another ruse to give the government more power and control over your lives. You so-called "conservatives" are the useful idiots who will help make this happen. There is nothing in the Constitution that authorizes the government to force us to carry identification cards. NOTHING. I will not sit by and let the tyrants turn this country into a police state just because you don't like Mexican gardeners. Again, the real solution is to illegal immigration is to prevent them from coming here in the first place. National IDs and DNA on file is all bullshit that won't prevent anything.

Just as Ron Paul did with Don't ask Don't tell, his rhetoric stands in direct contrast to his lengthy voting record. Paul has voted 7 times in a row against using the National Guard on the border. When a law was enacted to do what his rhetoric claims.his single comment on AZ SB1070 was: "I have some reservations about that law, but not its' intent'. You are either purposefully lying or you are just ignorant. Ron Paul has repeatedly called for changing the 14th amendment and ending its power to grant birthright citizenship. The internet is rife with quotes from him on this issue, some of which are in citations at the bottom of the article. It's one thing to dislike what Ron Paul has said, but it's another thing to malign the integrity of the article's author by saying he made up quotes when the proof of the statements is readily available for confirmation.
Dude, you just can't understand English. Are you an illegal? The are no citations in the Constitution for "the responsibility for our immigration mess"... or any other kind of "mess". When Bush lied about 9-11, was there a citation in the Constitution about it? What the hell are you talking about? Paul was explaining that the immigration mess in America is largely the fault of the executive branch for not protecting the borders in the first place. Go back to Mexico.

The 14th amendment doesn't grant citizenship to foreigners born here. Hell the 14th didn't even pass and doesn't really exist constitutionally.
October 2, 2006 A recent article in the Houston Chronicle discusses the problem of so-called anchor babies, children born in U.S. hospitals to illegal immigrant parents. These children automatically become citizens, and thus serve as an anchor for their parents to remain in the country. Our immigration authorities understandably are reluctant to break up families by deporting parents of young babies. But birthright citizenship, originating in the 14th amendment, has become a serious cultural and economic dilemma for our nation. In some Houston hospitals, administrators estimate that 70 or 80% of the babies born have parents who are in the country illegally. As an obstetrician in south Texas for several decades, I can attest to the severity of the problem. It’s the same story in California, Arizona, and New Mexico. And the truth is most illegal immigrants who have babies in U.S. hospitals do not have health insurance and do not pay their hospital bills. This obviously cannot be sustained, either by the hospitals involved or the taxpayers who end up paying the bills. No other wealthy, western nations grant automatic citizenship to those who simply happen to be born within their borders to non-citizens. These nations recognize that citizenship involves more than the physical location of one’s birth; it also involves some measure of cultural connection and allegiance. In most cases this means the parents must be citizens of a nation in order for their newborn children to receive automatic citizenship. Make no mistake, Americans are happy to welcome immigrants who follow our immigration laws and seek a better life here. America is far more welcoming and tolerant of newcomers than virtually any nation on earth. But our modern welfare state creates perverse incentives for immigrants, incentives that cloud the issue of why people choose to come here. The real problem is not immigration, but rather the welfare state magnet. Hospitals bear the costs when illegal immigrants enter the country for the express purpose of giving birth. But illegal immigrants also use emergency rooms, public roads, and public schools. In many cases they are able to obtain Medicaid, food stamps, public housing, and even unemployment benefits. Some have fraudulently collected Social Security benefits. Of course many American citizens also use or abuse the welfare system. But we cannot afford to open our pocketbooks to the rest of the world. We must end the perverse incentives that encourage immigrants to come here illegally, including the anchor baby incentive. I’ve introduced legislation that would amend the Constitution and end automatic birthright citizenship. The 14th amendment was ratified in 1868, on the heels of the Civil War. The country, especially the western territories, was wide open and ripe for homesteading. There was no welfare state to exploit, and the modern problems associated with immigration could not have been imagined. Our founders knew that unforeseen problems with our system of government would arise, and that’s precisely why they gave us a method for amending the Constitution. It’s time to rethink birthright citizenship by amending the 14th amendment. I looked it up. You're right about RP's position on the 14th amendment.
