Former Mayor Rudy Giuliani's daughter was arrested Wednesday afternoon for allegedly shoplifting at an Upper East Side beauty store, police said. Caroline Giuliani, 20, who lives in the area with her mother Donna Hanover, was apprehended at the Sephora on 144 E. 86th Street and taken to the 19th precinct where she was held in a prisoner's cell, police said. Her mother was also at the station house.
Five cosmetic items with a value of $100 dollars were found in her purse, law enforcement sources said. But Caroline also had $300 in cash in her purse, sources said.
The alleged theft was caught on camera, according to sources.
But the sources also noted that store management may now decline to press charges, which would leave the decision to prosecute in the Manhattan District Attorney's hands.
Giuliani is receiving a desk appearance ticket, officials said. Her return date is Aug. 31.
"Once we review the case, we will decide whether or not to file a criminal complaint," a spokeswoman for Manhattan DA Cyrus Vance Jr. said.
Giuliani left the precinct at about 7:15 p.m. Wednesday and quickly got into an SUV with a man and two women. She declined to answer reporters' questions.
A person who answered the phone at the Upper East Side store said "no comment" and hung up. Sephora later issued an official statement saying, "It is Sephora'a policy not to comment on matters that are under police investigation."
Caroline is a student at a Harvard University where she is studying performing arts but she was wearing an NYU T-shirt at the time of her arrest. She made news in 2008 during Giuliani's failed presidential run because she was a member of an Obama supporters group.
Hanover, a former TV newscaster, was Rudy Giuliani's second wife. The former tough-on-crime mayor is now in his third marriage with Judith Nathan.
