Food stamp use hit record 40.8m in May Bloomberg News / August 5, 2010

WASHINGTON — The number of Americans who are receiving food stamps rose to a record 40.8 million in May as the jobless rate hovered near a 27-year high, the government reported yesterday.

Recipients of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program subsidies for food purchases jumped 19 percent from a year earlier and increased 0.9 percent from April, the US Department of Agriculture said in a statement on its website.

Participation has set records for 18 straight months.

Unemployment in July may have reached 9.6 percent, according to a Bloomberg News survey of analysts in advance of the Aug. 6 release of last month’s rate. Unemployment was 9.5 percent in June, near levels last seen in 1983.

An average of 40.5 million people, more than an eighth of the population, will get food stamps each month in the year that began Oct. 1, according to White House estimates.

The figure is projected to rise to 43.3 million in 2011.

BushCo started the trend.

And in 2008 Obama said he would reverse it.

He's made it worse.

Man do you set the bar low.

Thursday, 5 August 2010 More Unsubstantiated But Plausible Gossip A leading UK grain merchant is refusing to buy any more grain at current levels as the only way of hedging purchases is by selling futures and the margin calls are now crippling, is one story reaching my ears today.

Faced with a dearth of real physical buyers willing to pay these prices they're caught between a rock and a hard place.

Sell the futures and carry the physicals hoping that the market doesn't collapse before a buyer can be found? Not a lot of prudence there is there?

To distill this for the uninitiates:

See nuts in a vise for details. ;}  8O

And per usual, it really doesn't take that much to keep up.

First you get rid of the people paying you not to understand:

Ilargi: US small business sentiment is down. Consumer income is down. Consumer spending is down. Pending home sales are down. Worldwide, crops are threatened by drought and floods. And while some claim that a US bumper crop will ease the problems, American corn is not exactly a perfect substitute for Russian and Ukrainian wheat, which go a long way towards feeding extensive segments of Middle East and Northern African populations.

ROV Films Thousands Of Globs Of Oil Leaking Directly From Sea Floor After BP Cements Well.

BP has started cementing the BP Gulf Oil Spill well as of 9:00 AM August 5th, 2010 in hopes of permanently stopping the flow of oil from the leaking well but an underwater ROV is now watching hundreds of oil Globs leaking directly from sea floor.

Almost 10 minutes of video footage showing globs of oil leaking from the sea floor with no other ROV’s in site.

Most of the Globs filmed are barely on the edge of the horizon while others are even more close.

This is happening now on Ocean Intervention ROV 2.
