Big & Rich Served Up Free In Binghamton Big & Rich play free spontaneous show in Binghamton, NY.

By Neil Haislop

BINGHAMTON, NY Friday Jun.16.2006 /netmusiccountdown.com/ -- Big & Rich invaded Binghamton, New York, Tuesday night for a impromptu show after making an unscheduled stop at WHWK– The Hawk.

Big Kenny, John Rich and Raybaw Records Director of Promotions Jimmy Rector are on the road between tour dates visiting radio stations to talk about the duo's current single "8th of November."

Under the pretense of stopping through town for dinner, Rector, who has known PD Ed Walker for years and had not mentioned that Big Kenny and John Rich were with him, surprised the station with an on-air visit.

What was initially going to be a 20-minute stop to say a quick hello and thank-you ended up as another Big & Rich night-to-remember. After chatting on the air for a few minutes the guys decided they were in the mood to do what they do best - entertain a live audience. A few phone calls later, the Magic City Music Hall agreed to open for a FREE Big & Rich concert that was to start as soon as possible.

The guys turned in a 90-minute set that closed with a moving a capella version of "8th of November."

Big & Rich are coming

Big Kenny talks tour, influences and new album

By Rachel Kubicek THE JOPLIN GLOBE (JOPLIN, Mo.)

They’re a little bit country, a little bit rock ‘n’ roll and a whole lot of music.

Big & Rich are “Comin’ to Your City” - if you live in Miami, Okla., that is - when they perform at 7 p.m. Saturday at Buffalo Run Casino.

It’s hard to categorize the sound that comes from the unique duo of Big Kenny Alphin and John Rich. Songwriting partners since 1998, they began honing their crazy sound that shot them to stardom with the release of 2004’s “Horse of a Different Color,” which hit No. 1 on the country charts and featured the hit single “Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy.” The album was followed in 2005 with “Comin’ to Your City.”

Their music, Big Kenny said in a phone interview, is “country without prejudice” and influenced by singers and songwriters from years gone by.

Q. When did the “Comin’ To Your City” tour begin and how long will you be on the road?

A. It started at the beginning of June and will continue throughout the fall. We will finish the tour close to December, playing three nights in a row in Vegas.

Q. What are your expectations for the tour?

A.For our fans to come out and be moved by the music more than they ever have before and to have more fun. We want it to be the biggest show on Earth.

Q. How did Big & Rich come to be?

A. Both John and I came to Nashville in the early ’90s and both had previous record deals. We started writing together in 1998. We get this crazy sound we can make together and the reason we make music is that we have no other option. It’s in our hearts. I want to be a musician and John is the exact same way.

Q. How did you come up with your music style? What is your inspiration?

A. We believe in country without prejudice. We listened to the Beatles, Sinatra, Johnny Cash and Pink Floyd. We are both country boys and draw from different influences, too. We believe music should have no prejudice. Start with music and eliminate prejudice and demands in the work. We just try to give it the best we can. Some of my favorites are Bill Withers (sings a few lines from “Ain’t No Sunshine When She’s Gone”), and Merle Haggard, an incredible songwriter, Dean Martin. We listen to it all. You’ll hear Nickelback, Outkast, Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, Kenny Chesney, Gretchen Wilson, Keith Urban, just about anything, pumping out of our bus.

Q. What do you do on your downtime when you are on tour?

A. We make more music. We are in the studio, writing or making more music. I try to have my family, my wife and my 7-month-old son in the studio with me. I love my family and I include them in everything we do. We are always making music and helping others make music and supporting the arts.

Q. Are you working on another album?

A. We are always writing for it. We will record the third album this winter. In the meantime we are working on new songs. John is currently doing a record with John Anderson and I’m working on songs inspired by my son.

Q. What is the Muzik Mafia?

A. Musical Artistic Friends in Alliance. It was a bunch of us that got together before our careers took off and we got together in The Pub of Love in Nashville just to play and have fun. We didn’t advertise and played for 72 weeks in a row. It was a time to play and encourage people to stay with it and support other artists. It was a group including Gretchen Wilson, Cowboy Troy, James Otto, John Nicholson, before they got record deals.

Q. You have a documentary by the same title of the song “The 8th of November.” What is it about and what inspired the song?

A. “The 8th of November” story came from a chance meeting about four years ago before our careers took off. We were playing in Deadwood, South Dakota, and Niles Harris, a Vietnam veteran, was there tending bar in a saloon where we were playing and wearing the top hat I now have and told us the story of when he was 19 years old and a soldier in Vietnam. He was one of the few who survived a jungle firefight on Nov. 8, 1965. We wrote “The 8th of November” to honor him. Last year we went with him on a trip to Vietnam to the place where the battle took place. He buried his boots at the exact battlefield. In July there will be stand-ups of John and I at Wal-Mart where you can get the documentary for free with Prilosec OTC. The documentary will also air on GAC.

Q. What is the strangest thing that has ever happened on tour?

A. For me it was last November. I went home for three days during the tour and my son, Lincoln William Holiday Alphin, was born. I was really lucky he was born during the three-day break. A week later I took him out on tour with me.
