Title: The new Chevy Volt: Overpriced and oversold (but it feels good to be green!!!!)

July 29, 2010 The new Chevy Volt: Overpriced and oversold Henry Percy Pricing for the Chevy Volt, that eagerly awaited savior of Government Motors, has been set at last: $41,000!

That's $8,000 more than the Nissan Leaf will sell for, and the Leaf is a pure electric. The Volt is a hybrid, running only 40 miles on a charge, the rest on a gasoline generator. In one of the most deceptive lines in the WaPo article, the writer informs us that "Although the prices are high, enthusiasts say that electric cars can reach a large, untapped market for vehicles with little or no tailpipe emissions." Oh the clever journalists, parsing their words so carefully: yes, zero tailpipe emissions if you always plug it in and drive no farther than 40 miles and if you don't count the smokestack emissions from the oh-so-evil coal-fired electric generation plants.

And notice that the writer is not silly enough to say there is "a large, untapped market" for such vehicles; no, that would be the enthusiasts speaking. Of course. And enthusiasts will say anything to bolster their, well, enthusiasm.

When the Prius was selling 50,000 units a year Toyota lost money on every one because the economies of scale were not great enough. The Volt will not hit the streets for another 16 months, and GM plans on making only 10,000 the first year. So this is the vehicle that GM has bet the farm on? More like buying the farm. There is a market for vehicles that make a holier-than-thou statement, but it is not untapped as there are a number of products already in the arena and more on the way, and it cannot be large when the price point is $41,000. Maybe Government Motors is counting on selling the Volt to the government. Now there's a "large, untapped market."

BTW,why doesn't some conservative with the video gear and the bucks produce a conservative "Uncomfortable Truth" video about the hypocrites on the left like Goober and Babs Streisand?

They could follow Goober, his family, and their bodyguards around in their armor- plated big-block V-8 Suburbans and videotape them boarding private jets to fly off and tell the rest of us to conserve energy.

They could get a video from the archives of Babs telling people to conserve energy by hanging up clothes to dry instead of using a drier, and then show video footage of the mansions she owns and keeps operating and staffed in 3 different countries.

This could be a award-winning movie that would earn the producers millions, and make Michael Moore eat his liver.

BTW,they could also take video of Moore's million dollar plus condo in NYC,and of him riding around in limo's,too.

Not to mention Ralph Nader, and his luxury condo held in his sister's name. It wouldn't even hurt to mention that it was the Dims that outed Nader as a homosexual and closet millionaire.

I didn't know about the homo part but Forbes magazine did an "expose" on his empire of interconnected "charities" probably back in the '80s. It was an incestual relationship, figure he probably took a cut from each, at 10K a pop he would have been picking up at least 500K+ a year. I don't remember how many foundations there were.

Only thing he ever got right was the early Corvair, damn that was one of the worst disasters Detroit ever came up with.

Not really. It handled better than the VW Bug,but you would never hear a leftie complain about a VW. Not PC.

The reason Nader had it in for Corvairs had nothing to do with the suspension or the quality of the car. He went after them because comedian Ernie Kovacs was driving one when he was killed. He ran head on into a oncoming car because he took his eyes off the road to light a cigar and crossed the center line.

Nader had wood for Kovacs.

Wrong. The bug was a slug but the Corvair turned over. That's why GM had to re-design the rear suspension. I blew a VW away in NJ once in Dad's Vega, guy drove like an asshole and then tried to outrun me. D'bag.

My uncle had a choice to take his pickup or a '56 VW a customer had us running to keep it from sitting around to go deer hunting in the snow and he took the VW.

Then GM comes out with the Vega. Great concept, but I went over the design with a Pontiac engineer (I worked at Ford and Bendix) and we both had the same suggestions. One more gear, iron engine I think they nicknamed it Iron Duke, a couple more. By then it was too late. Just another GM f'up.

We at Bendix did the fuel injection for the Cosworth Vega. I got to drive our company car on a wet road and the thing scared the he77 out of me. Too much power and a back end that couldn't hold the road.

Spinning tires on a summer day on a rain soaked road is not cool. I keep a couple of hundred pounds of tools in the back of my truck just to calm it down. Vega needed a better distribution or at least better traction as well.

Only GM POS I ever owned was an Opel Kadett, no wonder it was selling at less than 25% retail, low mileage and only two years old. I had to tighten and set the valve rockers every 6000 miles.

Corvair's were a nightmare in the shop. Sleeves for the pistons had me rebuild one twice, they were crapola. A neighbors friend visiting tried to fix his and drilled into the transmission from the oil pan, pretty lame but he also caught a piece of metal in the eye.

No,not wrong. They both turned over, and Kovac's death is why Nader went after GM.

BUT.....,to show you how out of touch GM was, they hired hookers to try and get blackmail on Nader to shut him up. If they had done their homework they would have hired boys and had some serious blackmail to use against him.

To ad to the irony,Nader's ability to ignore the hookers and stay on focus was the basis of his reputation for honesty and unshakable character as a fighter for the common man.
