Title: NYT: Oil slick on gulf surface disappearing rapidly on its own

ABC actually beat them to the punch on this story, reporting yesterday that clean-up crews are having trouble even finding the spill (“experts say an astonishing amount has disappeared, reabsorbed into the environment”), but only now that the Times is on it will it really break big.

It’s not that the oil’s all gone, of course. But a lot of it is. And the rest is … hiding.

Scientists said the rapid dissipation of the surface oil was probably due to a combination of factors. The gulf has an immense natural capacity to break down oil, which leaks into it at a steady rate from thousands of natural seeps. Though none of the seeps is anywhere near the size of the Deepwater Horizon leak, they do mean that the gulf is swarming with bacteria that can eat oil.

The winds from two storms that blew through the gulf in recent weeks, including a storm over the weekend that disintegrated before making landfall, also appear to have contributed to a rapid dispersion of the oil. Then there was the response mounted by BP and the government, the largest in history, involving more than 4,000 boats attacking the oil with skimming equipment, controlled surface burns and other tactics.

Some of the compounds in the oil evaporate, reducing their impact on the environment. Jeffrey W. Short, a former government scientist who studied oil spills and now works for the environmental advocacy group Oceana, said that as much as 40 percent of the oil in the gulf might have simply evaporated once it reached the surface.

An unknown percentage of the oil would have been eaten by bacteria, essentially rendering the compounds harmless and incorporating them into the food chain. But other components of the oil have most likely turned into floating tar balls that could continue to gum up beaches and marshes, and may represent a continuing threat to some sea life. A three-mile by four-mile band of tar balls was discovered off the Louisiana coast on Tuesday.

Less surface oil means fewer dead animals and, presumably, less of a chance that a hurricane’s going to blow in and paint the coast black. As for the oil below the waves and what it’s doing to marine life, oxygen levels, etc., the feds will have to get back to you on that. So far, so good, though: The Times notes that two early assessments have found relatively low concentrations of toxic compounds in the deep sea.

Exit question: Now that they’re probably going to start scaling back the clean-up, will The One also relent on the drilling moratorium he seems to wants so badly?

Update: Says Karl, “I’d bet that you could search the NYT coverage of the Exxon Valdez and not find a story like that.” Subscribe to *The Spill Baby Spill Party*

This is a lie.

Imagine your antiperspirant is the oil. 2-butylethylene is the propylene glycol vehicle that gets it under your skin.

EPA/US- "we can't seem to find any unsafe levels here."

"The combination of Corexit and crude oil can be more toxic than either alone, since they contain many ingredients that target the same organs in the body. In addition, Corexit dispersants facilitate the entry of oil into the body, into cells, which can result in damage to every organ system (Burns and Harbut, 2010).

"Exposure to chemicals in crude oil and dispersants can occur through skin contact, inhalation of contaminated air or soil/sand, and ingestion of contaminated water or food.

"Potential human health effects include burning skin, difficulty breathing, headaches, heart palpitations, dizziness, confusion, and nausea — which have already been reported by some workers — as well as chemical pneumonia and internal bleeding (Burns and Harbut, 2010, US EPA 2010).

7/28/2010 The Anti-Moratorium Rally Ate Our Oily Souls: There the Rude Pundit was, in the Cajundome in Lafayette, Louisiana, a week ago, in the media section, right in front of the stage, for the Rally for Economic Survival. The rally, sponsored by local businesses, but mostly those that are oil-related, was to send a message via the media that most of Louisiana opposes President Obama's six-month moratorium on new deepwater drilling, as well as the suspension of operations on 33 wells currently being drilled (which is less than 1% of the deepwater wells in the Gulf). Everywhere you went in town, you could see signs telling people to go to the rally. Businesses shut down so their workers could attend, some even providing buses for them to get there. And, indeed, the Cajundome, which has a Justin Bieber concert coming up, was pretty much filled with over 11,000 people.

We're fucked. That's the conclusion the Rude Pundit reached. We are so very fucked by oil. Because the cost of weaning this nation off it is astronomical. Last month, when Bill Maher said, "Fuck your jobs" in favor of the environment, it was a fine rhetorical flourish, but so, so very naive, in a way he usually is not. But not because he dreams big. Liberals are dreamers. It's what we do.

We are fucked because every job lost is a family we all gotta help. It would cost trillions of dollars to extricate ourselves from the claws of Big Oil. And we are simply no longer a nation that thinks in such ways any more. That's why the Rude Pundit walked out of the rally angry, sad, and despairing. Unless we are willing to sacrifice as a whole, unless we are willing to shift our entire economy to saving the earth and the air, you may as well let 'em drill.

As to the likelihood of a toxicair plumeof Gulf oil and dispersants being breathed by human beings ~Scientific Americanexplained on July 15, 2010: "Of course, sea spray and evaporating water will carry the oil and any chemical dispersants with them"And this polluted air and water vapor certainly will be carried to the near shore and left as an oily residue on everything from trees to electrical transformers" "If there's oil in the water, it will be coming along with it to some extent," says marine physicist Rick Luettich of the University of North Carolina. "I don't know how significant the impact will be." http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=how-will-a-hurricane-affect-gulf-of-mexico-oil-spill

* If you live along the coast, avoid areas where there are reports of oil reaching the shore. * If the smell bothers you or you see smoke, stay indoors, set your air conditioner to reuse indoor air, and avoid physical activities that put extra demand on your lungs and heart. * If you find any oil, avoid touching it, as well as oil spill-affected water and sand. * If some of the oil gets on your skin, wash it off as soon as you can with soap and water. * If you begin to feel sick after coming into contact with the oil or spill-affected areas, contact your doctor or other health professional."

CDC's final bulleted point is to contact a doctor if ill. That point raises the non-consensual human experimentation issue: Research involves monitoring test subjects and test effects. The doctor then becomes, knowingly or not, complicit in the atrocity of harmful research. Additionally, "research" is "proving" the major health impact of the Gulf operation is "mental."

Most Gulf "research" is being funded by BP that enforces laws about what can and cannot be included in the study and reported, paying professors, experiencing university financial cut-backs, top dollar to participate in the Gulf of Mexico crime against humanity cover-up. (See one of many examples: www.lsu.edu/research/pdfs/LSU_BP_RFP_062510.pdf)
