After three months of nearly unimpeded flow of crude oil into the Gulf, BP’s Deepwater Horizon well has at last been capped. This comes as good news to Gulf residents who have suffered the devastation of their beaches and local economy since the offshore drilling rig exploded on April 20.

BP PLC vice president Kent Wells, said at a news briefing that the oil stopped flowing into the Gulf at 2:25 p.m. CDT. "I am very pleased that there's no oil going into the Gulf of Mexico. In fact, I'm really excited there's no oil going into the Gulf of Mexico," Wells said. Read more>>

Bummer for some people here who are going to have to get on with their lives now.

So when is President Tarball going to do his lawful duty and start properly managing the cleanup?

Oh that's right. He's getting on with his life on the golf course.

In all fairness, you can't blame him for that. There are no golf courses in his homeland of Kenya. Besides, it's hard to find solutions to problems like the Gulf oil spill when all your time is spent hiding your proof of citizenship, school records and the like.

Cut him some slack. Destroying a constitution is harder than it looks.

It's too late for anything but the truth.

Bummer for some people here who are going to have to get on with their lives now.

I told PO Forums Day 3 I was gone the day they cap this.

With a statement like the above, from an intelligent person like you, war, I might as well say the same here.

That's 'capped' as in 'killed' with cement. Hardened.

4.5 million bbls, 2 & 1/4 VLCC's in the GoM now, and you think I need to get a life?

Dragon King. TEOTWAWKI still. ;}

So is the well integrity test a meaningless PR stunt, which is delaying completion of the relief wells, and failing to bring us any closer to permanently killing the oil gusher?

Or is it a valuable tool to see if the well can be protected from further damage during a hurricane?

Only time will tell ...

So, again thank you, war, for your opinion. Think bp only did $20 billion in damages as well?

i just read theoildrum.com, the pressure levels aren't high enough yet for BP to rule out leaks elsewhere in the well.

Thanx go. Have to go over and read it.

bp's been lying from Day 1. Why do anything different now.

And I noted that bp flooded PM news with ads. Why is bp running ads, anyway. ;}

And what America seems to be desperate to 'get back to':

©©The US public mostly still wants imperial power. Nearly all Americans refuse to understand that our nation is a huge empire, but we absolutely adore the benefits of our empire especially the part about spending way above our means to pay.

As I understand it, the next step is to slowly close the valves and try to run her up to 8,000PSI for a "test". Not content with capturing all(?) of the oil, they want to risk making things worse.

This is stupid! They should get all of the oil coming out and store it. It could possibly make us energy independent for decades.

IMO, they're purposly trying to blow it open all the way, to advance the globalist NWO, greenie agenda. All part of the Bush/Gore plan.

Cavnar believes that BP's true goal is to make it harder to measure the flow of oil from the damaged well, because under the Clean Water Act, it will be liable for civil penalties of up to $4300 for every barrel spilled.

"While they have every incentive to get the well killed, BP also has every incentive to not capture 100% of the well flow until they do," Cavnar wrote last week at Huffington Post. "As soon as they do capture all the flow, then a real, measurable number will be in front of the public, and that's the last thing BP wants, since that number will then be used to extrapolate environmental damage, hence per barrel fines that will likely run to the tens of billions anyway."

"The whole [original] reason for this cap was to allow two more outlets to produce to four ships so they could capture between sixty and eighty thousand barrels a day," Cavnar told Olbermann "This whole business of shutting in -- and shutting down the relief well -- just doesn't make any sense to me at this point. ... My guess is that they're hoping to be able to shut down at least some of the production from the well so once they open it back up to the surface ... it will be producing at a rate less than what it was 'open flow.' So it'll be harder to measure what the total flow was from the well when it was completely uncontrolled."

And of course there is always this:

I want it to be stopped so badly, I think I'm afraid to believe it really is

;} …“Walter Isaacson, the leader of this great institution said, ‘Don’t be too dark!,’” Ferguson said. The affable British scholar tried to keep it light. He used a stage whisper to tell the Aspen Institute audience, “I know you’re not comfortable with the word ‘empire,’ especially just after the Fourth of July, but you are the Redcoats now.”

What I love is the expected knee jerk reactions of those waiting in the wings. Frothing to go out to the field to shoot the wounded and steal their boots.

LMFAO

Gov. Bob Riley, speaking from Dauphin Island this afternoon, said "I think a lot of prayers have been answered today."

Like the Sweet Baby Jeesus scourged/smited us with the oil volcano has now decided that we've suffered enough!?

And the Dead Gulf? What did it do to deserve the wrath of Sweet Baby Jeesus.

Hunter, who witnessed the test from BP's war room in Houston, told The Washington Post that the pressure rose to about 6,700 psi and appeared likely to level out "closer to 7,000." He said one possibility is that the reservoir has lost pressure as it has depleted itself the past three months.

"It's just premature to tell. We just don't know whether something is leaking or not," Hunter said.

We're glutinous yeast. Stopping at nothing until the pain is relentless excessive.

Three things. The oil's moving into a salt dome. It's moving into a fault. It's not that big of a play and the gas pushing the oil has escaped, the field is ruined.

©©The entire concept of a secretive, private Federal Reserve was based on the notion that a bunch of crazed, rich bankers were concerned about the working class schlubs who need jobs. Of course, the creation of this bank coincides with the beginning of the Communist surge which took over quite a few major empires and countries. Pretending they wanted to protect workers, the bankers told the American voters, the trick to this business is…low interest rates on loans!

One lesson we should have learned over the last three months is to wait 72 hours before getting our hopes up on this topic.

I hope they've contained the leak.

Obama's first all-by-his-lonesome budget, btw, calls for a $1.17 trillion deficit.

One of the underreported, if not at all, stories of this leak is that BP bragged a few years ago in its own trade magazine that it had developed a method of determining "to the drop" how much oil was coming out of ANY well.

Yes. Went along with the Frontiers of the Future, Real Time Data Feeds to Houston HQ from EVERY well.

Is it because BP wasn't ready with the tools and the technology to perform a shut in? And manufactured a reason to let them off the hook? Or what? There has to be a rational reason for this sudden change in direction.

Edit: I should say, not that I'm complaining IF it works without causing further damage to the well. As my previous posts state, I don't understand BP's need to shut in the well with the risks involved since they have engineered a closed system to capture the oil. Other than to obfuscate the measurement of how much the well is actually flowing as others have stated in this thread. Good points here Alvis... this idea with the mini BOP hadn't featured on their "options list" until a couple of days ago. Now all of a sudden, it has become a Hollywood blockbuster..."The Surprise Rabbit out of the hat.... that will fix everything".

I'm surprised it took them 80+ days to make and test this contraption. To me it seems like a very long time to make and test a few spool pieces and a couple of "off the shelf" BOP rams.

So, you have to question what is driving the use of this "mini-BOP" (my terminology), and perhaps also, the timing of these announcements. Looks like a lot of Hollywood special effects and propaganda to boost share price and other world-wide bp negotiations (Libya?) to me.
