The officers opened fire multiple times, striking the teen. Police say he was pronounced dead at Kern Medical Center.
The Kern County Sheriff's Office identified the suspect as Traveon John Avila.
A 17-year-old passenger was arrested on suspicion of conspiracy, auto theft and participation in a criminal street gang. Police say a third person in the vehicle managed to escape.
