Title: Here's The Real Reason Unemployment Is So High: Because President Tarball Makes It Impossible For Small Businesses To Hire Employees

Everyone knows that the United States is bleeding jobs. According to one new study, the private sector in the United States has lost 10.5 million jobs since 2007. The U.S. economy lost 125,000 more jobs during the month of June. Approximately a million frustrated American workers have simply dropped out of the employment market altogether over the past two months.

But the question not enough people are asking is why so many jobs are being lost.

Yes, the large global corporations have been sending millions of jobs overseas where labor is far, far cheaper. And yes, the U.S. government has accumulated so much debt that it is absolutely suffocating the U.S. economy. But there is another very important factor that has been largely overlooked. Traditionally, about 75 percent of all new jobs are created by small businesses. But today, hundreds of thousands of small businesses are being strangled out of existence by all of the oppressive taxes, fees, rules, regulations, paperwork and demands that government keeps imposing on them. In such a repressive environment, it is getting close to impossible for small businesses to thrive, and if our small businesses can't succeed, then we simply are not going to see a lot of jobs being created.

You see, the truth is that over the past several decades the game has become dramatically stacked in favor of large businesses. Big corporations have the money to lobby Congress and other governmental institutions, they get almost all the tax breaks and they are the only ones who get bailouts. They even "help" write legislation on the federal level.

Many times large corporations will even lobby for more regulations for their own industry because they know that they can handle all of the rules and paperwork far easier than their smaller competitors can. After all, a large corporation with an accounting department can easily handle filling out a few thousand more forms, but for a small business with only a handful of employees that kind of paperwork is a major logistical nightmare.

When it comes to hiring new employees, the federal government has made the process so complicated and so expensive for small businesses that it is hardly worth it anymore. Things have gotten so bad that more small businesses than ever are only hiring part-time workers or independent contractors.

So what we actually have now is a situation where small businesses have lots of incentives not to hire more workers, and if they really do need some extra help the rules make it much more profitable to do whatever you can to keep from bringing people on as full-time employees.

In a recent article for the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Wayne Allyn Root described what he is hearing from his friends who are small business owners....

I've polled all my friends who own small businesses -- many of them in the Internet and high-tech fields. They all agree that in this new Obama world of high business taxes, income taxes, payroll taxes, capital gains taxes, and workers compensation taxes, the key to success is to avoid employees. The only way to survive as a business owner today is by keeping the payroll very low and by hiring only independent contractors or part-time employees provided by temp agencies.

Can the U.S. economy thrive in such an environment?

Of course not.

Small businesses are slowly being strangled out of existence.

Unless something changes quickly, small businesses are going to continue looking for ways to shed employees rather than hire them.

In the article referenced above, Wayne Allyn Root explained why this is true....

My small business-owning friends aren't creating one job. Not one. They are shedding jobs. They are learning to do more with fewer employees. They are creating high-tech businesses that don't need employees. And many business owners are making plans to leave the country. In a high-tech world where businesses can be run from anywhere, Obama has a problem. His one-trick pony -- raise taxes, raise taxes, raising taxes -- is chasing away the business owners he desperately needs to pay his bills.

The U.S. government has become like the 500 pound fat guy who jumps on a horse and then gets angry when it won't move.

Passing even more ridiculous regulations and raising taxes even higher is not going to fix business in America.

The burdens we have placed on our small businesses have gotten worse under every single presidential administration of the past several decades. Now our great economic machine has become so overburdened and so tired that it is simply refusing to move.

And this is not a short-term problem either. Yes, we have lost a ton of jobs since the beginning of the "Great Recession", but our problems go back a lot farther than that. The reality is that the U.S. population has grown by about 25 million people since they year 2000, and we needed to create millions upon millions of new jobs to support that increased population. Instead, we have lost a total of 3 million jobs since 2000.

Needless to say, that is not a good trend.

There are simply not enough jobs for everyone.

Today, there are more than 5 unemployed Americans for every single job opening.

It is becoming harder and harder to find a job , and the number of Americans who are chronically unemployed is absolutely exploding.

In America today, the average time needed to find a job has risen to a record 35.2 weeks.

There are millions of Americans out there tonight who feel like punching the walls or drinking themselves under the table out of frustration because they can't find a job.

And many of those who are "chronically unemployed" are about to experience even more pain.

So far, the U.S. Senate has refused to extend long-term unemployment benefits for about 1.3 million Americans. Without this assistance, these Americans and their families will be forced to survive on food stamps and whatever else they can scrape together.

The tent cities that are popping up all over the United States are about to get a lot more crowded.

So is there much hope that this is going to turn around any time soon?

Unfortunately, no.

Big corporations are not going to pay U.S. workers ten times more money than what they are paying employees in Malaysia, China or the Philippines just because they feel sorry for them.

Small businesses are not going to hire a lot more workers as long as things stay the way that they are. In fact, many small businesses are going to continue to look for ways to cut employees.

The public sector is the one place that had been hiring more workers, but due to growing concern about exploding budget deficits, there isn't going to be a lot of additional hiring in the public sector either.

The truth is that there is not a lot of reason for optimism right now. The U.S. economy is being battered by a host of economic problems, and with each passing week even more economists warn that we are likely headed for the second half of a double-dip recession.

So if you still have a job, be thankful. If you don't have a job, you are probably going to have to get really creative.

Times are tough and they are going to get even tougher. But it is in the midst of challenging times that we find out who we really are.

Can you cite me one specific new tax that Obama has instituted on small businesses?

Yes, read the stimulus bill, and health care reform to allow small businesses to buy insurance in pools (a conservative idea).

Except it hasn't yet, and it won't in the future, GO65.

Nice try, but the numbers available so far don't support that assertion.

In fact, 51% of all companies in a recent survey said they were dropping healthcare as a benefit because they can't match the new requirements.

IN addition, healthcare premiums are rising rapidly.

The Bush tax cuts are going to be allowed to expire, and the resulting top income tax rate will increase to 39.6%, up from 35%; dividend tax rates will soar to 39.6% from 15% while the capital gains tax rate will jump from 15% to 20%. For families of small business owners insolent enough to die in 2011 rather than 2010, the estate tax will take 55% of the estate, up from 0% today. Not only does death provide no reprieve from taxes, but apparently neither does paying taxes to foreign governments, as the administration is seeking to eliminate the foreign income tax credit, which would subject income taxed overseas to additional US taxes.

The impact of these taxes will be far wider than the administration would lead you to believe. They tout the fact that these tax increases will only impact individuals making over $200,000 a year or families making over $250,000. The first point they don’t mention is that corporations simply turn around and pass any tax increases on to their customers. From auto companies to toothpaste manufacturers to retailers, corporations get their tax dollars from their customers. Fundamentally taxes are paid by people, not corporations, and the more taxes they pay the fewer dollars they have to spend in businesses that employ people to provide goods and services. Secondly, the administration doesn’t tell you that most small businesses in the United States, where more than 80% of all new jobs are created, are owned by people in that $250,000 - $1,000,000 per year tax bracket and they file their company’s income on their individual returns. To the degree that higher taxes make it more difficult to start, maintain or grow their businesses profitably, they will be hiring and employing fewer workers. Again, the impact is felt far beyond the “rich” the administration loves to vilify.

Obamacrapcare:

__________________________________________________________

There are over twenty new or higher taxes in Obamacare. Several will first go into effect on January 1, 2011. They include:

The “Medicine Cabinet Tax” Thanks to Obamacare, Americans will no longer be able to use health savings account (HSA), flexible spending account (FSA), or health reimbursement (HRA) pre-tax dollars to purchase non-prescription, over-the-counter medicines (except insulin).

The “Special Needs Kids Tax” This provision of Obamacare imposes a cap on flexible spending accounts (FSAs) of $2500 (Currently, there is no federal government limit). There is one group of FSA owners for whom this new cap will be particularly cruel and onerous: parents of special needs children. There are thousands of families with special needs children in the United States, and many of them use FSAs to pay for special needs education. Tuition rates at one leading school that teaches special needs children in Washington, D.C. (National Child Research Center) can easily exceed $14,000 per year. Under tax rules, FSA dollars can be used to pay for this type of special needs education.

The HSA Withdrawal Tax Hike. This provision of Obamacare increases the additional tax on non-medical early withdrawals from an HSA from 10 to 20 percent, disadvantaging them relative to IRAs and other tax-advantaged accounts, which remain at 10 percent.

The Alternative Minimum Tax and Employer Tax Hikes:

________________________________________

When Americans prepare to file their tax returns in January of 2011, they’ll be in for a nasty surprise—the AMT won’t be held harmless, and many tax relief provisions will have expired. The major items include:

The AMT will ensnare over 28 million families, up from 4 million last year. According to the left-leaning Tax Policy Center, Congress’ failure to index the AMT will lead to an explosion of AMT taxpaying families—rising from 4 million last year to 28.5 million. These families will have to calculate their tax burdens twice, and pay taxes at the higher level. The AMT was created in 1969 to ensnare a handful of taxpayers.

Small business expensing will be slashed and 50% expensing will disappear. Small businesses can normally expense (rather than slowly-deduct, or “depreciate”) equipment purchases up to $250,000. This will be cut all the way down to $25,000. Larger businesses can expense half of their purchases of equipment. In January of 2011, all of it will have to be “depreciated.”

Taxes will be raised on all types of businesses. There are literally scores of tax hikes on business that will take place. The biggest is the loss of the “research and experimentation tax credit,” but there are many, many others. Combining high marginal tax rates with the loss of this tax relief will cost jobs.

Tax Benefits for Education and Teaching Reduced. The deduction for tuition and fees will not be available. Tax credits for education will be limited. Teachers will no longer be able to deduct classroom expenses. Coverdell Education Savings Accounts will be cut. Employer-provided educational assistance is curtailed. The student loan interest deduction will be disallowed for hundreds of thousands of families.

Charitable Contributions from IRAs no longer allowed. Under current law, a retired person with an IRA can contribute up to $100,000 per year directly to a charity from their IRA. This contribution also counts toward an annual “required minimum distribution.” This ability will no longer be there.

Insulin is a PRESCRIPTION drug. It is not sold over the counter. So you have to buy aspirin out of pocket. BFD.

The “Special Needs Kids Tax” This provision of Obamacare imposes a cap on flexible spending accounts (FSAs) of $2500 (Currently, there is no federal government limit).

That is misleading. My company caps this @ 3K for a family and $1500 for singles. The normal cap is $2-3K per family and $1k-1500 per single.

I don't know, I was responding to what the author of the posted article wrote.

As for "taking over/kneecapping American business and industry"

# The share that corporate tax revenues comprise of total federal tax revenues also has collapsed, falling from an average of 28 percent of federal revenues in the 1950s and 21 percent in the 1960s to an average of about 10 percent since the 1980s.

# The effective corporate tax rate — that is, the percentage of corporate profits that is paid in federal corporate income taxes — has followed a similar pattern. During the 1990s, corporations as a group paid an average of 25.3 percent of their profits in federal corporate income taxes, according to new Congressional Research Service estimates. By contrast, they paid more than 49 percent in the 1950s, 38 percent in the 1960s, and 33 percent in the 1970s.

Seems that the smaller the share of taxes paid by business, the more they whine.

FYI:

Some coverage gains may take a while to add up. For example, Blue Cross Blue Shield Kansas City reports brisk sales to small businesses by advertising Obama's new tax credit for those who offer coverage. CEO Tom Bowser said more than 60 of the 227 small firms signed up so far did not previously offer health benefits.

"Small groups are one of the toughest markets we have," said Bowser. "Because of the economy, more and more were dropping coverage entirely, and we've able to reverse that."

Health care reform will affect small business tax credits BY JON CHESTER July 05, 2010 The recent health care reform legislation included a new health care tax credit for certain small businesses that provide health insurance to their employees.

The credit is available to small companies and tax-exempt organizations for the years of 2010 – 2013. So, for those companies with 25 or fewer full-time employees with an average wage of $50,000 or less, and the company pays a minimum of 50 percent of their employees coverage are eligible. The credit is phased out based on size and salaries of the company. Companies with 10 or fewer employees with an average wage of $25,000 will receive the highest credit of 35 percent of premiums paid. This credit increases to 50 percent in 2014.

Note: The credit is claimed on the business tax return NOT the employment tax returns.

If an owner of a business also provides services to it, the owner does count as an employee.

A sole proprietor, a partner in a partnership, a shareholder owning more than two percent of an S corporation, and any owner of more than five percent of other businesses are not considered employees for purposes of the credit. Thus, the wages or hours of these business owners and partners are not counted in determining either the number of full time employees or the amount of average annual wages; so the premiums paid on their behalf are not counted in determining the amount of the credit. It is strongly advised you speak with your accountant to determine which is the best route for your company

Small business to benefit from healthcare reform While most parts of a sweeping national health care reform won’t take effect until 2014, the government is giving small businesses incentives this year to get people on the insurance rolls.

Many employers are already taking advantage of a tax credit they can get for 2010 if they offer their employees insurance, according to small business advocates.

The employers have to have fewer than 25 full-time employees with annual salaries of less than $50,000 to qualify. They also must contribute at least 50 percent of each employee’s premium.

The smallest businesses often struggle the hardest to offer their employees health insurance — even if they’d like to. In Maryland, just 56 percent of firms with fewer than 50 employees offer workers health benefits, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation.

The subject was part of the discussion during a health care forum held last week at Johns Hopkins University. Among the representatives fielding questions was the group Small Business Majority, which advocates for firms with fewer than 100 employees.

"Small businesses want their workers to have health insurance," said Terry Gardiner, national policy director for Small Business Majority. "They just have to be able to afford to do it."

The tax credit for small businesses is one of the first pieces of the reform law to take effect. The credit is offered on a sliding scale basis of up to 35 percent of the employer’s eligible premium expenses through 2013. The credit will be taken on the annual tax return.

Small Business Majority has a nifty tax credit calculator on their website: http://smallbusinessmajority.org/tax-credit-calculator/

After 2014, the maximum credit increases to 50 percent of premium expenses, but coverage must be purchased from state health insurance exchanges.

Small businesses will pool their buying power in these exchanges to negotiate better rates. Right now small businesses pay premiums that on average are 18 percent higher than large businesses, and the smaller firms pay administrative costs built into their health plans that can be three to four times as much, according to the Small Business Administration. All because they don't have enough clout with insurers.

Nearly 13 percent of workers at U.S. firms with fewer than 10 employees paid annual premiums of $7,200 or more for coverage for a single person in 2008, according to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. The national average was about $4,700.

The new law also will prohibit insurers from charging higher rates to small businesses with sick employees or raising rates when somebody gets sick.

Advocates of health reform also believe more people may be willing to work for small companies after the changes. Small businesses may not have been able to compete for the top workers because they can't offer competitive health benefits.

The new law also will prohibit insurers from charging higher rates to small businesses with sick employees or raising rates when somebody gets sick.

I have a chronic, easy and inexpensive to manage disease; one doctor's visit and one blood test a year, the medication cost - $9.00 for a three months supply. The insurance provider raised rates 25% over the original quote for each person in the company due to my pre-existing condition.

Advocates of health reform also believe more people may be willing to work for small companies after the changes. Small businesses may not have been able to compete for the top workers because they can't offer competitive health benefits.

That is true.
