Sarah Palin's Bowling Trade Show Speech: This Time, She Didn't Annoy Everyone

As you are no doubt well aware, sometime-Alaska Governor Sarah Palin has successfully leveraged her celebrity into a lucrative gig as a trade-show keynote speaker. It has not always gone well. In fact, at times, it's gone quite terribly. But this week, Palin appeared as the keynote speaker at the (hotly-anticipated) Bowling Proprietors' Association of America's International Bowl Expo 2010, and honestly, she seems to be getting better at it!

Maybe she's taken previously panned performances seriously, maybe she's found in bowling a topic that's more up to her speed. But at the very least, she's learning that expo-goers want to hear remarks that are relevant to their lives. And, in contrast to some previous convention attendees, Joan Taylor at BowlingDigital reports that Palin "had done her research," and spoke pleasingly about the importance of bowling centers as a place for communities to come together:

"Bowling has an honored place in our culture and is interwoven with our sense of community in our country. Go to any town or city and you will find bowling - it is truly a slice of Americana," said Palin.

"Bowling has been able to evolve, innovate and capitalize on changes in culture to keep alive and flourish. Through the entrepreneurial spirit of its proprietors, bowling has seen a new resurgence and has never been more popular."

During her keynote speech, Palin spoke of the societal influence of bowling that spans generations of American life. Professing a personal appreciation for the bowling industry, Palin also noted that, during his high school years, worked as a pin boy and that she herself has fond childhood memories of watching him play in this Thursday night bowling league.

That's pretty smart stuff. It reminds me of Robert Putnam's book, "Bowling Alone: The Collapse And Revival of American Community", which uses bowling leagues as a metaphor for the overall decline in civic engagement in America. I'm not sure that Palin, being an avowed opponent of community organizers, is the sort of person who'd align herself with Putnam, but her remarks definitely indicate that she understands that the bowling industry sees itself as a provider of community space and enrichment.

The reviews are much better than those that she received from the attendees of the Wine And Spirits Wholesalers of America's 67th Annual Convention and Exposition, which read: "Sarah Palin totally wiped my hard drive... I am seeing only a blue screen in my head... I forgot how to do math...a person is supposed be smarter coming out an industry keynote."

That said, I thought this was a little awkward:

One question asked her if she became president would she keep the bowling lane in the White House?

"Yes, I would," she said. "What an illustration of Americana where the president can go downstairs, blow off a little stream and bowl a few frames."

That's an illustration of Americana? Rich folks and their fancy private bowling alleys? That can stray into some uncomfortable territory:

Additionally, the appearance wasn't completely devoid of Palin's penchant for playing fast and loose with the facts:

Palin recalled her youth when her father set pins in Idaho. "My Dad was on a Thursday night bowling league," she said. "He bonded with his buddies. I have memories of that point of my life which mean very, very much to me."

As Andrew Sullivan notes, "Palin was three months old when she left Idaho." Maybe the bowling just left a really strong impression?

But the good news is that Palin managed to give a speech at a trade show without immediately angering everyone around her, so I guess she is the GOP's frontrunner for the presidential nomination now!

Damned "gotcha" media. Sarah will deal with them, but good, when she becomes President.

Even in 1964, automatic pin setters were pretty standard in bowling alleys, especially those with enough lanes to support a league.

I loved hitting that reset button.

I remember being about 7 or 8 and going bowling...I didn't know that the lanes were on a counter. I must have hit that reset button a zillion times because they wanted to charge me for 5 games when I had only bowled 3.

Chuckles...but you have me filtered.

I was 7 or 8.

You are 52 and you betrayed customers who hit your website.

Stoney...I warned you that when Boofer came here that he had zero sense of self restraint and that he would post private or proprietary information if it suited him to do so.

You edited his post in which he posted his own customers' ISP info and yet you made no comment here as to why.

Why?

I don't care about bad eyes company. I should have said something a long time ago. Stop talking about his company. It's not relevant to anything here. It is harrassment and it leads a trail to his identity. Do you want a trail to your identity? Talk politics.

I've read some fairly insane things on the internet but "Boofer is a victim" just zoomed to number 1.

And if you believe that he won't turn on you, ask Goldi, whose name and address he once posted in his profile at FR and Bill Mayer at pipeline.

Stop talking about his company.

That should be directed at Boofer.
