Largest skimmer in the world must be deemed ‘effective’ by the federal government before it’s allowed to help with oil clean-up By Jon Ward - The Daily Caller | Published: 1:51 AM 06/30/2010 | Updated: 4:00 AM 06/30/2010

The world's largest skimmer known as 'A Whale' The largest skimming ship in the world — known as an “A Whale” — is expected to arrive in the Gulf of Mexico on Wednesday, but will be prevented from contracting with BP to help clean up the oil spill until the federal government decides that the vessel is “effective.”

The Coast Guard will not clear the Taiwan-owned ship – which is reportedly the length of 3 football fields and 10 stories high – to join the clean-up until it undergoes a test.

“The Coast Guard research and development center has a team of personnel that are ready to observe the tests to test the efficacy of the vessels systems, as well as its ability to safely operate in that area down there,” Coast Guard spokesman Ron LaBrec told The Daily Caller.

LaBrec said that the Coast Guard does not have concerns about the environmental impact of the ship’s operations. Some reports have said that the Environmental Protection Agency is worried that some of the 500,000 barrels of oily water sucked up each day by the vessel may contain some traces of oil when placed back in the Gulf.

An EPA spokesman did not return a request for comment by press time.

The Coast Guard spokesman said that there are no legal concerns holding up the “A Whale” skimmer. The Jones Act, which prohibits foreign ships from operating in or near U.S. ports in many circumstances, does not apply to skimmers.

LaBrec said that the holdup for the super skimmer was required only because the government is required to give it the green light, even though BP would be the one paying for the skimmer and on the hook if it was not effective.

“There are standards for oil spill response vessels, testing standards,” LaBrec said. “The federal on-scene coordinator is involved in approving the different technologies that are used in the response to make sure there are no issues with that.”

A BP spokesman said the oil company had not asked the skimmer to come help with the cleanup.

“They’ve just turned up hoping to help out. We haven’t contracted with them,” the BP spokesman said.

The same as the life preservers on the barges.

The USCG is playing CYA, and protecting it's turf.

Both Sun Tzu signs of Ineffective Leadership. And not just Obama.

The Us collapses. Regionalism strengthens.

When you break out the bias in the article, the concern seems to be not if it skims effectively but what it puts back into the water...

And Not a word aboput Corexit? The most Toxic NeuroToxin out there? I mean, I know oil first hand. I work with cars. And I've made a hobby of moving oil. Getting rid of oil. And to know that Corexit can 'disperse' such a molecule? It's Got to be Bad News.

But our USCG is so worried that the ship might put a fraction of the oil back in the water?

Why? Everything;s dead in there. And with the Next Cat 5 everything ten Miles inland will be dead? And these people keep acting like we've got time.

Please. And there is a penalty for what these PTB are doing. They can't see past their faces now...to quote Arthur Silber:

"all the members, especially those with any kind of public voice (or with ambitions for same), are exceedingly familiar with the major talking points, all of which they obediently apply to whatever story comes along. You can do it, too, if you want to make yourself superstupid. It's remarkably simple, and simpleminded."

There are three major stories here and Pilger hits each one:

1) Hastings embarrasses the Military and it's Media Apologists

2) The idea that a president was elected as a man of the people—at least that’s the way he presented himself—is still, I think, promoted by the media, whereas Obama has made clear that he has very much reinforced Wall Street, he has helped to rebuild Wall Street, his whole team is from Wall Street. He’s reached into Goldman Sachs for his senior people. I think that that anger that I’ve felt in the United States over the last few years, that anger at a popular level, is still not expressed in the so-called mainstream media.

3)Israel can’t be covered up. It can’t be apologized for as effectively anymore. And even in the New York Times, which has always been a stalwart in supporting the Israeli regime, the language is changing. And I think this again reflects a popular understanding and a popular disenchantment with the Middle East and the United States role in the Middle East, the apologies for one atrocity after the other, the lack of justice for the people in Palestine.

All highlighted by the US Gov't not doing anything but cover and Again the Media's Silence on the DeepS hit horizon.

All of which should've been/ was (IMHO) known Nov 08. But was pushed ahead anyway.

I'm heading to Destin, FL tomorrow. If you don't see me much for the next 5 days, that's the reason. I'll bring back some tar balls as souvenirs.

I'm heading to Destin, FL tomorrow.

For R&R?

I can't go back there again. Not for a good long while.

I think I would do something dangerous. ;}
