(06-28) 14:30 PDT PHOENIX, (AP) -- Federal officials have told Arizona's attorney general and a congresswoman that more than 500 of the 1,200 National Guard troops headed to the U.S. Mexican border will be stationed in the state.
Democrat Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and Attorney General Terry Goddard met with top officials in the Obama Administration in Tucson for the briefing. The federal officials included John Brennan, the deputy national security adviser for homeland security.
Giffords spokesman C.J. Karamargin says the troops are now being trained. The 524 soldiers are expected to deploy in August.
Brennan also met with more than 50 local and state law enforcement officials to hear about challenges on the border.
The federal officials are meeting with Gov. Jan Brewer later Monday.
