With oil still gushing in the Gulf, all eyes are on a tropical wave in the central Caribbean (map) that appears to be getting more organized.

There is a 40 percent chance the strong tropical wave will become a tropical cyclone by Saturday, National Hurricane Center forecasters said Thursday morning.

Conditions suggest a more powerful storm could form over the next few days.

Meteorologists have been tracking the system throughout the week. The system has produced heavy rains in Jamaica and along the southern coast of Hispaniola. Thunderstorms are also forecast to drench the Cayman Islands and parts of Cuba.

FOR THE NORTH ATLANTIC...CARIBBEAN SEA AND THE GULF OF MEXICO...

1. SURFACE OBSERVATIONS AND SATELLITE IMAGES INDICATE THAT THE BROAD AREA OF LOW PRESSURE CENTERED BETWEEN THE EASTERN TIP OF HONDURAS AND JAMAICA HAS BECOME BETTER DEFINED THIS EVENING.
SURFACE PRESSURES HAVE BEEN FALLING IN THE AREA AND THERE HAS BEEN AN INCREASE IN THE SHOWER ACTIVITY.
UPPER-LEVEL WINDS ARE GRADUALLY BECOMING MORE CONDUCIVE FOR DEVELOPMENT AND THE SYSTEM COULD BECOME A TROPICAL DEPRESSION BEFORE IT REACHES THE YUCATAN PENINSULA IN A COUPLE OF DAYS.
THERE IS A HIGH CHANCE...60 PERCENT...OF THIS SYSTEM BECOMING A TROPICAL CYCLONE DURING THE NEXT 48 HOURS. (1 image)

Wikipedia:

"Hurricane Dennis was an early-forming major hurricane in the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico during the very active 2005 Atlantic hurricane season.

"Hurricane Dennis began as Tropical Depression Four in the southeastern Caribbean Sea on the evening of July 4, the first storm of the season to form away from Mexico and Central America. Almost immediately, it made landfall on Grenada as a tropical depression with 30 mph (48 km/h) winds.[1] On the morning of July 5, it strengthened into Tropical Storm Dennis in the eastern Caribbean; this was the earliest formation of an Atlantic season's fourth storm (by comparison, during the 2004 season, Hurricane Alex formed in early August and Hurricane Charley made landfall in Cuba on August 12). The newly named Dennis began moving rapidly to the west-northwest.[1]

It was clear from early weather forecasting models that Dennis had the potential to be a major storm, and it was already predicted to reach hurricane status while it was still a tropical depression.[2] It reached hurricane strength on the afternoon of July 6 while approaching the southern coast of Hispaniola, and it quickly became a strong and well-organized Category 1 storm on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale.[1] The next day it strengthened rapidly to become a Category 4 major hurricane, the earliest in an Atlantic hurricane season that a storm had reached that strength since Hurricane Audrey in the 1957 season.

I don't know where Brian is going with this, but what would happen if a tropical Hurricane were to hit the spill area, or anywhere near it?

James is the one I was directing my comment to, not Brian S.

That is where I'm 'going with this'...what if?

Even before the spill, the database will show I've always had an interest in tropical storms as I lived on the Galveston coast from some 14 years.

Should also explain my extreme interest in this oil spill.

Opinion is divided among experts as to if a large storm would help clear the oil or make the situation worse. I was listening to a guy on the weather channel the other night discussing it.

Seems in the past there are examples to support both viewpoints.

Day 67.

And I love Galveston. Wouldn't live there due to the possibility of a repeat of the storm in the early part of the last century, but still a great town to party in.
