Title: Top Republican Joins Chorus Calling For Rep. Barton To Step Aside

Rep. Jo Bonner (R-Ala.) added his name to the list of Republicans calling on Rep. Joe Barton to step aside as ranking member of the House Energy and Commerce committee.

The Gulf Coast GOP lawmaker, incensed that Barton apologized to BP at Thursday's high-profile hearing, released a statement on Friday saying that Barton's comments "sadly fall short of an appropriate response."

In that statement Bonner, the ranking member of the House ethics panel, revealed that he talked to Barton on Friday morning.

"As I told him, I believe the damage of his comments are beyond repair and, as such, I am today calling on Joe to do the right thing for our conference and immediately step aside as Ranking Member of the Energy and Commerce Committee," Bonner said in the statement.

Bonner, a member of House Minority Leader John Boehner's inner-circle, has been characterized as one of the "calmest guys in the legislative body."

But, on Friday, his ire at Barton could not be abated.

"There is no other way to say it… Joe’s comments were stupid and extremely insensitive to the hundreds of thousands of people who live along the Gulf Coast – many in my district – who are literally watching their way of life be destroyed by this catastrophe," Bonner's statement read.

After threats from House GOP leaders that he should "apologize, immediately," Barton said his comments were "misconstructed."

Barton added that he regretted any confusion over his comments calling a White House meeting with BP heads a "shakedown" after BP agreed to create a $20 billion escrow account for residents affected by the on-going oil spill in the Gulf Coast.

Barton aides did not comment for this story.

I don't ever recall someone apologizing for an apology.

I just read elsewhere (dKos) that the Dims are running an advert with Barton as the center piece representing the Pubbies, as the apologizing to Big Oil party.

Could it be any more F'd up than what this guy has said : )

We do have a saying in America: if you're in a hole, stop digging ..... erm, I'm not sure I should have said that.

It is pretty clear that the coalition can win in Afghanistan and Iraq in one way or another, but it will be a long, hard slog.

I don't know what the facts are but somebody's certainly going to sit down with him and find out what he knows that they may not know, and make sure he knows what they know that he may not know, and that's a good thing.

And there is, I am certain, among the Iraqi people a respect for the care and the precision that went into the bombing campaign.

On the tapes he confides his most dangerous private thoughts to Lady Bird. To her he cries, "I can't get out [of Vietnam], and I can't finish it with what I have got. And I don't know what the hell to do!" He adds, "I'm not temperamentally equipped to be commander in chief."

On Feb. 26, 1965, when Johnson orders his secretary of Defense, Robert McNamara, to launch Operation Rolling Thunder, which will drop more bombs on the North Vietnamese than on all of Europe in World War II, he is melancholy. "Now we're off to bombing these people," he says. "We're over that hurdle. I don't think anything is going to be as bad as losing, and I don't see any way of winning."
