Can Capitalism Survive?

One of the signs of advancing age in the American college professor is a tendency for him to write less and publish more. This seeming paradox is easily explained by the phenomenon of Collected Works, that is, by what on television would be described as reruns. As in television, no great public outcry is needed to bring forth the reruns; a question from his wife, a polite suggestion from a colleague, and the cut-and-paste operation is under way.I have put together here what I believe to be the best of the rather meager output of my professional career up to this point. For reasons (mostly financial) that always seemed adequate at the moment, I have been more of a speechmaker than a writer. ...

The white powder found in a working area of the White House's West Wing on Sunday night has been confirmed to be cocaine. A U.S. Secret Service source, however, is debunking reports that the substance was discovered in the library of the presidential mansion, according to Newsmax White House correspondent James Rosen. California Reparations Report Hits Child Support Debt

The California Reparations Task Force's final report has recommended the termination of all interest on unpaid child support payments if the debtor is Black, The Daily Mail reported on Tuesday. The report criticized "discriminatory laws" for having "torn African American families apart," and for resulting in a larger portion of Black fathers owing child support. In addition, the 10% interest applied to unpaid child support debt further hinders the ability of Black fathers to further their own educations while paying off their debts. Click for Full Text!

July 4th In Bizarro World

From colorful hot dog stands and front-porch grilling to car dealerships and fireworks — once again the people celebrate July 4th. The media will join the festivities and will air documentaries about the founding of the country, its struggles during the revolutionary war, the adoption of the Constitution and the various leaders that inspired a country to fight for its freedom. Journalists and pundits shall hold hands and sing their praises to the gods state. The mainstream, hailing from its intellectually void ivory tower will no doubt offer hosannas to our overlords. In the meantime, the message of freedom is nowhere to be seen. Indeed, quite the opposite tends to happen. Click for ...

Three Cheers for July Second

Today we celebrate the greatest day in our national history. Sound ridiculous? Not to John Adams, who in 1776 wrote to his wife, Abigail: "The Second Day of July 1776, will be the most memorable Epocha, in the History of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated, by succeeding Generations, as the great anniversary Festival. . . . It ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfire and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more." At least he got the pomp and parade part right. Click for Full Text!

The high-profile announcement by Siemens Energy that a large portion of its wind turbines could be suffering from faulty components sent its stock tumbling last week, but many industry experts are concerned that the problems it is facing may not be unique, CNBC reported Monday. The company announced on June 22 that between 15% and 30% of turbines installed by subsidiary Siemens Gamesa are currently suffering from component failure, prompting the company to withdraw profit estimates and sending stock plunging 36% in the immediate aftermath of the announcement. Christian Burch, CEO of Siemens Energy, said in a call with reporters Friday that “too much had been swept under the ...

Russia announced on Monday that it will be cutting its oil production significantly, a move that comes at a time when Saudi Arabia is also restricting its oil output, according to Reuters. Russian officials declared Monday that they will cut production by 500,000 barrels per day in August, while Saudi Arabian officials have committed to extending their reduction of 1 million barrels per day through at least August, according to Reuters. Monday’s cuts bring the total voluntary cuts announced by the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC+) to more than 5 million barrels per day, according to Reuters. Click for Full Text!

What Do We Celebrate on the Fourth of July?

One way to appreciate the meaning of the Fourth of July is to reflect on what nearly every one of the Republican and Democratic presidential hopefuls focuses on in his or her interviews and speeches. Apart from Texas Representative Ron Paul, who is openly libertarian while running as a Republican, all the rest are embarking upon the standard Santa Claus theme of presidential politics. In other words, they are promising to create more entitlements for us, telling us that if they become president, we will be getting more goodies from the federal government. Universal health care, higher minimum wages, subsidies to this industry and that, protection from foreign competitors and from ...

3 Things to Remember on Independence Day

It's difficult to say what most Americans commemorate or celebrate on Independence Day nowadays. Many appear to focus on some vague notion of "America." Others even take to jingoism equating the United States government with the very notion of "freedom." Lost in all of this is the fact that the Declaration of Independence — the document we're supposed to remember today — is a document that promotes secession, rebellion, and what the British at the time regarded as treason. ECONOMIC DETERMINISM, IDEOLOGY, AND THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION (1974)
Post Date: 2023-07-04 00:46:14 by Charles_Byrd

It is part of the inescapable condition of the historian that he must make estimates and judgments about human motivation even though he cannot ground his judgments in absolute and apodictic certainty. If, for example, we find that Nelson Rockefeller made a secret gift of $650,000 to Dr. William J. Ronan, we can choose to interpret Rockefeller's motivation in one of at least two ways: we can conclude, as did that eminent student of contemporary politics Malcolm Wilson, that Nelson made this and similar gifts purely as "an act of love"; or we can conclude that some sort of political *quid pro quo* was involved in the transaction. In my view, the good historian (1) cannot escape ...

America's Radical Revolution

Especially since the early 1950s, America has been concerned with opposing revolutions throughout the world; in the process, it has generated a historiography that denies its own revolutionary past. This neoconservative view of the American Revolution, echoing the reactionary writer in the pay of the Austrian and English governments of the early nineteenth century, Friedrich von Gentz, tries to isolate the American Revolution from all the revolutions in the western world that preceded it and followed it. The American Revolution, this view holds, was unique; it alone of all modern revolutions was not really revolutionary; instead, it was moderate, conservative, dedicated only to preserving ...

A federal judge in Wyoming blocked a school district from hiding students' gender identities from their parents. Chief Judge Scott Skavdahl of the U.S. District Court of Wyoming issued the preliminary injunction Friday in a lawsuit brought by Sean and Ashley Willey, who asked the judge to block Sweetwater County School District No. 1 from enforcing a policy requiring district staffers to call students by their preferred names and pronouns, and to respect the students' "privacy," the Cowboy State Daily reported. The American Revolution and Classical Liberalism
Post Date: 2023-07-04 00:40:48 by Charles_Byrd

The libertarian creed emerged from the "classical liberal" movements of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries in the Western world, specifically, from the English Revolution of the seventeenth century. This radical libertarian movement, even though only partially successful in its birthplace, Great Britain, was still able to usher in the Industrial Revolution there by freeing industry and production from the strangling restrictions of State control and urban government-supported guilds. For the classical liberal movement was, throughout the Western world, a mighty libertarian "revolution" against what we might call the Old Order—the ancien régime which had ...

Modern Historians Confront the American Revolution

The historian must be more than a chronicler, a mere lister of events. For his real task is discovering and setting forth the causal connections between events in human history, the complex chain of human purposes, choices, and consequences over time that have shaped the fate of mankind. Investigating the causes of such a portentous event as the American Revolution is more, then, than a mere listing of preceding occurrences; for the historian must weigh the causal significance of these factors, and select those of overriding importance. Progressive House Democrats are calling for an overhaul of the Supreme Court after recent rulings on gay rights, affirmative action, and student debt forgiveness. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., told CNN on Sunday: "The courts, if they were to proceed without any check on their power, without any balance on their power, then we will start to see an undemocratic and, frankly, dangerous authoritarian expansion of power in the Supreme Court. Some of you no doubt have been waiting anxiously for my diatribe focusing upon Tom Friedman’s latest column in the NY Times. Tom is the self- important, know-it-all NYT opinion writer who irritates me the most. Well here it is… I’m on another “research” trip in Europe, to soak up as much western civilization as I can before it further self-destructs into quasi-oblivion under the baleful influence of America—or more precisely, in thrall to the crusading crackpots who have hijacked America. Has the Criminal Biden Regime Utterly and Totally Corrupted Medicare?

We are constantly told we cannot afford Social Security and Medicare. Fighting Russia in Ukraine is more important than the survivability of the American population. I doubt anything can wake up the ignorant insouciant American population, but perhaps the Biden regime’s rip-off of Medicare in the interest of Big Pharma profits can introduce some reality into American consciousness. The Shocking Odds of War and Economic Chaos in the Next 18 Months! ft. Peter St Onge

In this video, Peter discusses Ray Dalio's recent article in Time Magazine, where he warns that the world is on the verge of great disorder. Dalio, the founder of Bridgewater and a prominent hedge fund manager, pays attention to historical parallels and highlights three alarming trends that haven't been seen since the 1930s. These include soaring debt and inflation, historical gaps in income and wealth, and great powers flirting with the possibility of a world war. Dalio raises concerns about a potential major inflection point in the next 18 months that could lead to significant changes and even civil unrest. Click for Full Text!

Meanwhile in Other News… Ukraine Proxy War Is an Unmitigated Disaster for U.S./NATO

There will be hell to pay for the U.S. and European rulers who have staked everything on their nefarious ambition for “strategic defeat of Russia.” The Ukraine proxy war against Russia can be increasingly seen as a disastrous defeat for the United States and NATO. That stunning outcome should be making world headlines. Instead, the Western media spin machine is in overdrive about a failed mutiny in Russia, which on an objective scale of important events is relatively minor compared with the colossal U.S./NATO scandal. Gallup Poll: Confidence in US Government Lowest in G7

Only 31% of those surveyed in the United States say they have confidence in their national government, placing it last of any of the G7 nations, according to a Gallup poll released on Monday. When Gallup first measured national confidence in governments worldwide almost two decades ago in 2006, the situation was exactly opposite, with the U.S. first among the G7 nations, as 56% of Americans expressed confidence in their national government.
