The state of California is about to give movie and TV studios a new lucrative tax perk. A bill awaiting California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s signature would extend the state’s tax incentive program for film and TV productions for five years but with a key update: Studios with more tax credits than they can use will be able to exchange those credits for cash. This paper examines the likely trajectory of the Ukraine war moving forward.1 I will address two main questions. First, is a meaningful peace agreement possible? My answer is no. We are now in a war where both sides – Ukraine and the West on one side and Russia on the other – see each other as an existential threat that must be defeated. Given maximalist objectives all around, it is almost impossible to reach a workable peace treaty. I have spoken with Mr. Gerson on the phone and corresponded with him on several occasions and he made it clear that his organization did not want to meet with me or have any interaction with me. The Supreme Court ruled Friday that Colorado cannot require an evangelical Christian web designer to provide same-sex wedding websites. The court found that the state’s anti-discrimination law violates Lorie Smith’s free speech rights under the First Amendment by demanding she creates same-sex wedding websites if she wants to do so for opposite-sex unions. Daniel Penny, the former Marine and subway hero, was arraigned on Wednesday in a brief legal step toward a full jury trial. He pleaded not guilty to the two charges the grand jury brought against him: second- degree manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide. Second-degree manslaughter is the killing of another human being without the intent of doing so, and is often referred to as involuntary manslaughter.
