John McCain Is a National Treasure Post Date: 2017-07-21 12:45:32 by Anthem

I first got to know John McCain when I was a fresh-faced analyst at the recently established Congressional Budget Office and he was a captain in the Navys Office of Legislative Affairs. We dealt briefly with each other when he served in the House of Representatives, and I was an official in Caspar Weinbergers Defense Department. Over the years I got to know him quite well, and the better I came to know him, the more my respect for him continued to grow. I was one of George W. Bushs Vulcans, so I did not work with McCain during the 2000 presidential campaign, but I never stopped admiring him, then or later. I did support his ill-fated run for the presidency ...

Full title: Second Monumental Arch of Titus Celebrating Victory Over Jews Found in Rome Arch unearthed at the entrance of the Circus Maximus was built by Titus' brother Domitian, boasting of how the Romans had done the undoable and 'subdued the Jews'. It wasnt enough for the Romans to enslave the Jews, plunder Judea, conquer Jerusalem, destroy the Temple and then erect a massive triumphal arch to commemorate those feats of war for millennia to come: They had to build a second, even larger monument to celebrate their victory. Archaeologists in Rome have uncovered the remains of a second triumphal arch dedicated to the emperor Titus and his success in putting down the ...

It was not until three days later that his body was discovered, according to Florida Today. MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) Were getting a new perspective tonight of the moment a Minneapolis police officer shot two family pets in a homeowners backyard. The body camera video shows the officers point of view while responding to a burglary alarm on July 8. It happened at 38th and Queen Avenue north. Despite the camera footage, the dogs owners still have questions for police about how the shooting unfolded. Video from a body camera shows an emotional exchange between 18-year-old Courtney Livingston and officer Michael Mays. Are they OK? Anyone with half a brain can read the Second Amendment, and clearly articulate its intent. Its not a complicated law. Its not buried in high-brow legalese that is indecipherable to the average person. Once you understand the original meaning of the words when they were written, and the wider context of the Bill of Rights, its meaning is obvious. The Second Amendment protects an individuals right to own and use firearms, which is a meaning that has been upheld by the Supreme Court. So its always somewhat surprising to learn that there are so many states with laws that disregard the Second Amendment. Its baffling that its taken so long to strike down these ...

This week, The Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court ruled that businesses can not fire employees for using medical marijuana if they have a legal prescription. Under the ruling, employees will be able to sue for handicap discrimination if they are fired for their medical marijuana use. The ruling came in the case of Christina Barbuto, a former employee of Advantage Sales and Marketing, who said she was fired because she tested positive for marijuana, despite the fact that she was legally allowed to use the drug under state law. Barbuto was prescribed cannabis by her doctor to help with complications caused by Crohns disease. When Barbuto was fired, she was ...
Court Says Gov't Has To Do More Than Say It Doesn't Believe The Property Owners If It Wants To Keep The Cash It Seized Post Date: 2017-07-21 09:21:31 by Deckard

from the so-much-for-the-K-9-unit-as-star-witness dept The federal government thought it had laid an easy claim to someone else's cash, but the DC Court of Appeals is telling the government it's not quite as easy as it makes it out to be. The court lets everyone know things aren't entirely normal with the first sentence of the opinion [PDF]: This is a civil-forfeiture case, which is why the plaintiff is the United States of America and the defendant is a pile of cash. From that starting point we arrive at two sets of claims. First, the government's: The government claims that the cash is subject to forfeiture because it is connected to the exchange [of] a ...
Megyn Kelly’s Bad News Just Keeps On Coming. She’s Screwed. Post Date: 2017-07-21 06:57:11 by IbJensen

(Angry Patriot) Megyn Kelly can bring in huge guests, but she cannot bring in viewers. NBC backed the wrong horse in this race. Her show Sunday Night with Megyn Kelly has steadily declined in viewers each week since it premiered last month. Kellys show hit a new low in viewers last Sunday as the magazine-style show struggles to stay relevant (via The Hill). The shows failure is not due to a lack of resources. NBC paid tens of millions to hire Megyn Kelly, and have arranged top-billing guests for her to interview each week. In her first week on air, Kelly was able to land an interview with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Since then she has interviewed Infowars host ...
US Lawmakers Seek to Throw Citizens in Prison for Decades if They Boycott Israel Post Date: 2017-07-21 06:17:48 by Deckard

One of the most fundamental rights in a nation logically consistent in crying freedom is the ability to boycott a company, entity, church, or, in the case of the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions Movement against Israel, an entire nation in protest of perceived transgressions to force through the wallet reforms which might not otherwise be accomplished. Boycotts have indeed managed the seemingly impossible SeaWorld, for example, ultimately had to shutter its orca captivity and breeding programs after the documentary, Blackfish, depicting horrendous, inhumane conditions, jerked heartstrings and ignited a backlash boycott, sending profits to the brink of an abyss. Now, ...

While the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) is still conducting its investigation into Saturdays fatal shooting of a beloved mother and life coach Justine Damond, sources close to the investigation are now saying Officer Mohamed Noor and Matthew Harrity believed they were being ambushed. But the attorney for Damonds family isnt buying that explanation. Officer Noor shot and killed Damond from the passenger seat of his cruiser, firing over his partner, and through the drivers side window striking Damond in the abdomen, killing her. To date, neither officer has spoken with the press, and Noor has reportedly refused to speak with BCA investigators. Neither ...

The charge of driving under the influence used to only apply to drivers who were under the influence of drugs or alcoholbut it will now apply to drivers who text, eat, smoke, read or groom while driving in the state of Washington. The implementation of the Driving Under the Influence of Electronics Act was expedited from January 2019 to July 23 after Washington Governor Jay Inslee signed a partial-veto, and insisted that public safety is better served by implementing this bill this year. When you are driving with a cell phone, you are a more dangerous driver than if you are driving drunk with a .08 blood alcohol ...
Taking Care of a Friend’s Dog For The Weekend? Better Have a License, NYC Says Post Date: 2017-07-21 05:01:10 by Deckard

Why does New York City hate puppies?Even something as simple as having a friend watch your dog for the weekend isn't immune from the scourge of government permission slips in New York City, it seems. The city's Health Department is threatening users of a popular pet-sitting app with fines of $1,000 for taking care of animals without a license. Thousands of users of Rover, a mobile app that connects pet-owners with individuals willing to feed, walk, and otherwise take care of their animals across New York City are potentially violating a little-known Health Department rule, the New York Daily News reported Thursday. Though no one has been fined so far, two residents have been hit ...
DOJ Boss Promises The Return Of Everything That Didn't Work During The Last 40 Years Of Drug Warring Post Date: 2017-07-20 22:29:08 by Hondo68

Attorney General Jeff Sessions isn't much interested in the "justice" side of the Department of Justice. Instead, it appears he'd like to throw on his letterman's jacket and head back to his glory days as a hard-nosed, 1980s-vintage drug warrior. Things were better when Sessions was a federal prosecutor in Alabama, ringing up drug convictions at a rate four times the national average. The word "reactionary" is thrown around a lot when describing Trump and his cabinet. But in Sessions' case, the term fits. Violent crimes rates have fallen steadily since the mid-1990s. Meanwhile, drug prices have dropped and purity has increased, despite four decades of ...

Bad Leadership 101: Toronto Man Builds Stairway for $550 Instead of $65,000 -- and the City Blocks It Post Date: 2017-07-20 14:30:01 by Deckard

Adi Astl's stairs made things much safer. That wasn't good enough for city government. As a leader, what should you do when someone thinks outside the box, ignores the rules, and solves a pressing problem for $64,450 less than expected? However you respond, don't do what the City of Toronto just did. Tom Riley Park is frequented daily by mothers with baby strollers, people practicing yoga, bike riders, dog walkers, and members of a community garden. Although the park has an official entrance, many people take the most direct path into the park from its parking lot, which means walking down a steep slope. Until recently, that path had only a yellow rope to hang onto to keep ...
This Poconos Property Manager Helped My Family Keep Our Vacation Home—Until Pennsylvania Shut Her Down Post Date: 2017-07-20 06:52:50 by Deckard

Arrowhead Lake is an idyllic little community in Pennsylvania's Pocono Mountains. For my family, it's the perfect vacation spot. We swim and canoe at the lake, hike and pick berries, roast marshmallows, and dance at the summer bonfires held at the community's main pavilion. It feels like a much-needed break from the fast pace of modern life, and we always come home feeling renewed and refreshed. We love it so much that after a few years vacationing there as renters, we decided to buy a home in the community. In order to swing this financially, we have to rent the place out when we are not there, like many vacation homeowners do. Initially, we were having trouble making that ...

The New York Times of Sunday July 16 brought chilling new evidence that Trump attorney general Jeff Sessions, in direct contradiction of the position stated by Donald J Trump when he was a candidate, plans a federal crackdown on marijuana in the 29 states that have legalized some form of its use. At a campaign rally in Sparks, Nevada on Oct. 29, 2015, Trump said: The marijuana thing is such a big thing. I think medical should happen right? Dont we agree? I think so. And then I really believe we should leave it up to the states. It should be a state situation
but I believe that the legalization of marijuana other than for medical because I think ...

There is no specific amount of cash defined by statute that crosses a legal threshold. Thus, one cannot know ahead of time not to carry, say, $5,000 but $500 is ok.It is enough that a government worker with a gun considers whatever cash you are found to have in your possession excessive. And these armed government workers can ...

Big Military Spending Boost Threatens Our Economy and Security Post Date: 2017-07-19 20:44:49 by Hondo68

On Friday the House overwhelmingly approved a massive increase in military spending, passing a $696 billion National Defense Authorization bill for 2018. President Trumps request already included a huge fifty or so billion dollar spending increase, but the Republican-led House found even that to be far too small. They added another $30 billion to the bill for good measure. Even President Trump, in his official statement, expressed some concern over spending in the House-passed bill.According to the already weak limitations on military spending increases in the 2011 sequestration law, the base military budget for 2018 would be $72 billion more than allowed.Dont ...

In April of last year, Dennis Hastert, former Speaker of the House and admitted child rapist, was sentenced to 15 months in prison after he was caught paying his victims to keep quiet. However, he was just released on Tuesday two months before finishing his already insultingly lenient sentence. Hastert was sentenced, not for raping children, but for illegally structuring bank transactions in an effort to cover up his sexual abuse of young boys. According to the Chicago Sun Times, Hastert, 75, is now under the supervision of a residential re-entry management field office based in Chicago, according to Bureau of Prisons online records. That means he is likely at a halfway ...
