Senate confirms dozens of Trump's nominees in an outbreak of bipartisan productivity after failed healthcare vote (Make Swamp Great Again)

What a difference a little bipartisanship makes. The Senate wrapped up an unusually productive week after the failed Republican healthcare vote with several smaller-scale legislative accomplishments. In a flurry of action Thursday, the Senate confirmed dozens of President Trump's nominees that had been logjammed amid the partisan standoff over the GOP efforts to repeal Obamacare. Ambassadors, agency staff and officials in the defense apparatus all saw their nominations sail to easy confirmation. More nominees have been confirmed this week than had been previously so far in the entire year, aides said. Among them were former Texas Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison to be the U.S. permanent ...

City Slaps Fines On Businesses For Putting Signs On Windows Without Permits (Classic protection racket enforced by city fines)

WICKER PARK  — A number of neighborhood small business owners are complaining that the city is overzealously policing sign permits, saying they’ve had to pay thousands of dollars in fines for words painted on their shop windows. “It just seems unfair to make you get a permit for every window panel,” said Scott Toth, owner of Craft Pizza at 1252 N. Damen Ave. Toth, who has been ticketed four times, hired a lawyer and appeared in court twice about the matter. He said he decided to remove the signs in all four windows and pay a $1,000 fine that had been reduced with the help of his attorney.   Toth had paid a contractor to paint “boiled ...

Eric Bolling reportedly sent explicit photos to colleagues

"Fox News Specialists" host Eric Bolling sent unsolicited photos of male genitalia several years ago to at least two colleagues at Fox Business Network and at least one colleague at Fox News, according to a HuffPost report citing a dozen sources. The women are either current or previous Fox employees who, when they received the messages, told colleagues they were very "upsetting" and "offensive." One woman said that when she replied to Bolling's text and told him never to send her photos like that again, he didn't reply back. When HuffPost contacted Fox on Friday, a spokesperson told the outlet, "We were just informed of this and plan to ...

Four charged with leaks from Trump administration as attorney general vows crackdown

Four people have been charged with leaking information from the Trump administration, the US attorney general announced on Friday, as he took an aggressive stand against the deluge of leaks that have plagued the first six months of the presidency. Jeff Sessions, who was taunted by his boss, President Donald Trump, for being weak on leakers, said that he would leave no stone unturned in the hunt for the culprits. His remarks came after the highly-damaging, and highly unusual, leak of transcripts of Mr Trump’s telephone calls with the leaders of Mexico and Australia. "No one is entitled to surreptitiously fight their battles in the media by revealing sensitive government ...

Immigrants denied credit by Wells Fargo may sue bank, judge says

By Dena Aubin NEW YORK (Reuters) - Young immigrants denied credit by Wells Fargo Bank because they are not permanent U.S. residents can sue the bank under a post-Civil War law barring discrimination on the basis of immigration status, a federal judge ruled. In a decision on Thursday, U.S. District Judge Maxine Chesney in San Francisco rejected Wells Fargo's argument that lenders are permitted under a more recent federal anti-discrimination law to consider immigration status before granting loans. Filed in January, the proposed class action accused Wells Fargo of denying student loans and credit cards to immigrants granted work permits under the 2012 Deferred Action for Childhood ...

Merseyside Police confirmed they were called to the Lord Street branch of the fast food restaurant at around 8:30am on July 8, 2017 to reports a man had exposed himself to a woman. Rachel Maddow on Her Trump-Era Popularity: 'I’m Assuming I’m Like a Fad Diet'

With less than one minute until showtime, Rachel Maddow was nowhere to be seen. On her set at 30 Rockefeller Plaza on June 19, the Jetsons-style desk bearing her name was vacant in front of the cameras. But the crew wasn’t concerned. You see, in this time of great uncertainty in politics and media, one thing, at least, remains constant: Rachel Maddow is on at 9:00 P.M. on MSNBC. The Rachel Maddow Show has been on air for almost nine years, and in that time its host has become a hero to many on the left, famous for a distinct style of analysis that uncoils even the strangest and most complex stories with an accessible, professorial ease. And as it would turn out, a taste for the ...

Onward Together, the group Clinton formed earlier this year, has brought on Emmy Ruiz and Adam Parkhomenko, veterans of her 2008 and 2016 presidential campaigns. Hillary Clinton has hired two political operatives from her 2016 presidential campaign to help manage Onward Together, the project she founded this spring with former governor Howard Dean to fund and support a coalition of Democratic groups led by activists and organizers. The new additions, Emmy Ruiz and Adam Parkhomenko, held central roles on Clinton’s campaign: Ruiz delivered key victories as state director in Nevada during the primary and in Colorado during the general election; Parkhomenko worked in headquarters as ...

CAIR Condemns New “Islamophobic” White House Chief of Staff

No, not Black Lives Matter…but you’re in the right ballpark. On Monday, shortly after Kelly was sworn into his new position, the Council of American-Islamic Relations tweeted a warning about the retired Marine general. “We condemn John F. Meet a Man Who WANTS Kids' Lemonade Stands Shut Down

If you want to gin up some legitimate and righteous outrage, share the story of a kid's lemonade stand being shut down by the authorities. An activity that has been going on for generations has been under attack in recent years by nanny-staters who hammer children for not having the myriad of licenses required to sell something people eat or drink. It's nearly universal that people look at what happens with confusion, with people on both sides of the ideological divide wondering just what the problem really is.Well, it seems we've found the mentality in a post where someone says they were glad a child's lemonade stand was shut down and the girl was fined for her ...

We All Need To Admit That America Has A Tattoo Problem

America, we need to talk. You might not want to admit this, but you need to hear the truth. You have a tattoo problem. For a variety of personal and professional reasons, I did an epic amount of travel in the last year, across thousands of miles and several states, and there was one cultural constant: Everywhere I went were lots of people with tattoos. And it’s not just that people have tattoos, it’s the tattoos they have. At one point, I found myself in Breckenridge, gawking at the majestic Rocky Mountain scenery—imagine the “Sound of Music,” only swap Julie Andrews singing with a middle-aged dad yelling at the kids to stop complaining about the long drive. The Libertarian Split Continues As “Blood And Soil” Speech Triggers Another Racial Witch Hunt

The split between left-leaning and right-leaning libertarians has reached a fever pitch after Jeff Deist, Director of the Mises Institute, gave an iconic speech during his annual Mises University event about “blood and soil” libertarianism, an idea encompassing cultural conservatism as a barricade against state power. “It is reasonable to believe that a more libertarian society would be less libertine and more culturally conservative — for the simple reason that as the state shrinks in importance and power, the long-suppressed institutions of civil society grow in importance and power,” Deist said. “And in a more libertarian society, it’s harder to impose ...

A judge ruled the dogs were "contraband."A federal judge ruled Wednesday that a Michigan woman has no basis to sue the Detroit Police Department (DPD) for shooting her three dogs because they were not properly licensed. U.S. District Court Judge George Caram Steeh dismissed a federal civil rights lawsuit filed by Detroit resident Nikita Smith last last year after a marijuana raid by Detroit police left her three dogs shot to death. Good luck controlling access to stuff that grows in cow dungIf MDMA and psilocybin move from schedule I to prescription status in the next decade--and there's good reason to think they will--obtaining the drugs will require going to a doctor and using them in a controlled setting. In the new issue of Drug Science, Policy and Law, the University of Amsterdam's James W.B. Elsey argues that while the medicalization of psychedelic drugs makes sense from a health care perspective, "the nebulous boundary between treatment and enhancement, and indeed between religious and personal discovery or spiritual uses, raises problems for the clarity of law": For example, is a person who ...

There are the important questions which matter and should be asked of anyone who discusses “politics.” Unfortunately, most people are oblivious to seeking these deeper insights. They are deferential to what they learned in school and from their peers, from their willfully ignorant parents, and from the regime media. They are unaware of the post-WWII creation by the National Security State of synthetic “liberal” and “conservative” ideological movements which sought to rationalize the projection of power and hegemony of the American empire. The American people have been pawns on the deep state’s chessboard for seven decades. One must employ what ...

The sanctuary county of Los Angeles is an illegal immigration epicenter, with the largest concentration of any county in the nation, according to a study from the Migration Policy Institute. The county also ...

Police departments are often forced to rehire bad officers because of union contracts

The Washington Post has an interesting story today about how police departments around the country are often forced to rehire police officers who have been fired for misbehavior thanks to union contract rules. Since there is no central database of information on police firings, the Post sent records requests to the 55 largest police departments in the country. Thirty-seven departments responded to the requests. Since 2006, those 37 departments had fired 1,881 officers. But in 451 cases, 24% of the time, the departments were later forced to rehire those same officers. From the Post: Most of the officers regained their jobs when police chiefs were overruled by arbitrators, typically lawyers ...

Maybe not a good character, but a character nonetheless. And while the White House will be a better, more stable place with him gone, in a certain way, I’ll miss him. But Mooch’s brief moment strutting and fretting upon the stage provided a nice illustration of one of the aspects of Trumpism that I find most alarming. After Mooch was appointed, I had conversations with a couple pro-Trump friends who objected to my characterization of Mooch as being unprepared and ill-suited for the ...

Despite a mountain of historical evidence that the Republican Party doesn't seriously stand for smaller government and individual liberty, I maintained some hope that this time would be different. With the GOP's retaking control of Congress and the White House, I actually thought Obamacare could be repealed and maybe even replaced with free market health care reforms. But though the night is still young in terms of the GOP's latest return to power, Republicans have quickly demonstrated that I should have trusted my usual pessimism, because it's clear that they're not guided by any principled support for limited government. Though a few congressional Republicans sincerely ...

Legislation Proposed To Remove Cannabis From Schedule 1 Drug List

As of right now, cannabis is considered a schedule 1 drug in the United States. The government has it listed with other drugs such as heroin and LSD. But an ambitious Senator thinks that should change, and proposed legislation to remove cannabis from the Schedule 1 list. With no known overdose amount, cannabis should be the furthest thing from a schedule 1 drug.  Schedule 1 narcotics are described as a drug or other substance has a high potential for abuse, a drug or other substance has no currently accepted medical treatment use in the U.S., and a lack of accepted safety for use of the drug or substance under medical supervision. But putting it in the same category ...

The government fought cannabis — and cannabis won. This Wednesday is the eightieth anniversary of the first major action the federal government took against cannabis in the United States, and eight decades later, that same federal government has still failed to reduce Americans’ consumption of the plant. In fact, it’s on the rise. Long before the era of prohibition, druggists used cannabis as a medicine. According to Origins, a joint publication by the Ohio State University and Miami University history departments: “Cannabis, like opiates and cocaine, was freely available at drug stores in liquid form and as a refined product, hashish. ...
