Biden Administration Proposes New Fuel-Economy Standards in Continuing EV Push

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration proposed stricter fuel economy standards Friday to hasten the transition to electric vehicles. Automakers will be required to improve the average mileage of passenger cars sold between 2027 and 2032 by 2 percent a year, and the average mileage of light trucks by 4 percent a year. In order to achieve the estimated average fuel economy of 58 miles per gallon by 2032, roughly two-thirds of new cars automakers sell by then would have to be electric, the New York Times reported. Too many who lean left today claim that the Enlightenment was the ideology of colonialism. Some academics, for instance, have claimed that it was a racist, colonial endeavour from the outset. That the Enlightenment needs to be ‘decolonised’. One piece in Harvard Magazine is even entitled ‘How the Enlightenment led to colonialism’. Do those who make this claim imagine there was no colonialism before the Enlightenment? Presumably not, but it’s important to understand how something so false could come to seem true. According to a July 12, 2023, article by Ryan Grim published by The Intercept,1 U.S. House Republicans investigating the origin of COVID-19 “appear to have inadvertently released a trove of new documents … that shed light on deliberations among the scientists who drafted a key paper in February and March of 2020.” The paper in question is “The Proximal Origin of Sars-Cov-2,”2 a letter to the editor of Nature Medicine published March 17, 2020. As part of a court settlement, three liberal college professors at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE) will undergo training in basic First Amendment rights by lawyers from Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF). The settlement also requires that SIUE revise its rules and student handbook to prevent future instances of the gross infringement of First Amendment rights of a grad student that occurred in 2022. The school will also pay $80,000 in damages.
