Humans love dogs more than their fellow man. Two major studies showed that mankind has more empathy for pooches in dire circumstances than suffering people, according to a report in the Times of London. A UK medical research charity staged two phony donation campaigns one with a dog and the other featuring a man. Of course, the pooch drew more contributions. Would you give pounds 5 to save Harrison from a slow, painful death? the separate ads said, featuring a canine and human Harrison. Then a Northeastern University study showed that only a baby human could compete with mans best friend. Students were showed fake newspaper clippings about a ...

Are there no-go zones in Europe, or aren't there? Have political control and the power of law enforcement in some urban neighborhoods been tacitly turned over to local Muslim leaders, with even the police taking a hands-off attitude? Across Europe, some politicians, journalists, and police spokespeople continue to deny that such zones exist, although the evidence for their existence becomes increasingly difficult to disavow.Even as these establishment functionaries continue to insist that no-go zones are a myth, however, news reports are indicating that in several European countries, the policing problem has advanced beyond the mere fact of no-go zones. Earlier this month, for instance, ...

Buying legal marijuana in California could be pricey enough to keep the black market healthy. Between customers, retailers and growers, taxes on cannabis may reach as high as 45% in parts of the state, according to a Fitch Ratings report. Those high taxes may keep consumers away from legal marijuana stores once the recreational retail market goes live on January 1. "High effective tax rates on California cannabis may complicate the state's efforts to establish legal markets" said analysts Stephen Walsh and Karen Ribble in a Fitch Ratings report on California's marijuana taxes. California marijuana consumers are going to have to pay a combination of state and local taxes ...

Remember after that last nuclear test in September, the one which measured 6.3 on the Richter scale, there was a secondary earthquake about 8 minutes later. Experts suggested that was the result of an underground collapse following the blast. The mountain under which North Korea had set off the 100 kiloton nuke was literally falling apart. Today, Japanese media is reporting that there was another big collapse earlier this month, with a tunnel under the mountain caving in and killing 100 workers. Another 100 workers were sent in to get them and they were killed by another collapse. From Fox News: The collapse at the Punggye-ri test site on Oct. 10 occurred while people were doing ...

ESPN pays $2 billion a year to the NFL for Monday Night Football and one NFL wild card playoff game. Ive written for the past couple of years that as ESPNs business collapses that ESPNs decision on whether or not to bid to keep Monday Night Football would be the first big test of how rapidly that business is deteriorating. Whats a deteriorating business look like? In the month of October ESPN lost over 15,000 subscribers a day in October per the latest Nielson estimates. 15,000 a day! Last year I wrote this about ESPNs challenges as it pertained to Monday Night Football: ESPN presently pays $1.9 billion a year for Monday Night Football. (This is a ...

A nearly century-old law that turned New York bars into no-dancing zones, prevented singers like Billie Holiday and Ray Charles from performing and drew protest from Frank Sinatra, is finally set to be struck down. The Cabaret Law was created during Prohibition to patrol speakeasies, and while its restrictions on musicians came and went, the ban on social dancing has remained leaving generations of club owners flicking the lights or playing Eleanor Rigby to still the crowd, lest they be fined or padlocked by the police in midnight raids. It is an odd and archaic regulation in a city that thinks of itself as a night life capital, but one that has resisted multiple attempts ...

A federal judge on Monday barred President Donald Trump's administration from proceeding with plans to exclude transgender people from military service. U.S. District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly ruled that the transgender service members who had sued over Trump's policy were likely to win their lawsuit. She directed a return to the situation that existed before Trump announced his new policy this summer, saying the administration had provided no solid evidence for why a ban should be implemented. Trump had ordered a reinstatement of the longstanding policy that barred transgender individuals from joining the military; service members who were revealed to be transgender were ...
