Smart Phones Make Dumb People Post Date: 2018-05-18 19:27:33 by Deckard

This morning our yard was abuzz with a chorus of songbirds. Summer tanagers, vireos, orioles, indigo buntings, goldfinches and cardinals had joined the resident bluebirds, woodpeckers, Virginia creepers, nuthatches, titmice and sapsuckers to complete the ensemble. Many had come in flocks, which was unusual before a few years ago. We live in a remote area, far from any cell phone towers. As these towers have become more ubiquitous the flocks of birds coming here increase. Others in urban areas say their songbirds have disappeared altogether. Many urban people are also reporting a massive decline in insect populations. With the discovery of the Schumann ...

I said Israel should be ashamed – now I am the one who is ashamed Post Date: 2018-05-18 13:52:41 by no gnu taxes

Its never easy to say youre sorry. To admit youre wrong. To announce publicly, I made a mistake. But to apologise when that apology comes bound up with what is, perhaps, the most intractable conflict on earth, makes it a thousand times harder. But that is what I am. Sorry. A few days ago I wrote a column about the latest round of violence on the border with Gaza. It was a cry from the heart. I love Israel. I have always loved it, and cannot envision a time when I will not love it. But in my office, I sit near a television set. And on Monday, I saw the following, side by side. On the left, in Jerusalem, I saw happy faces. Self-congratulatory faces. I saw ...
White House weighs in on Laurel vs. Yanny debate (Progressive scolds: That’s not funny, you monsters) Post Date: 2018-05-18 09:57:07 by Tooconservative

Thursday afternoon the White House weighed in on the greatest debate of our time: Laurel vs. Yanny. The clip is obviously supposed to be light-hearted and fun, a distraction but a harmless one. Naturally, this inspired people on the left to new fits of outrage. The clip opens with Ivanka Trump and includes cameo appearances by Kellyanne Conway, Sarah Sanders, Larry Kudlow, VP Mike Pence and President Trump himself (plus several more people I dont recognize). Most of the White House staff, to my relief, hears Laurel. Thats obviously the right answer and I cant believe theres anyone on the other side of this debate, but I guess some people have ...

from the may-as-well-just-go-back-to-hunches dept Good news for motorists: law enforcement is using something just as unreliable as $2 field drug tests to justify arrests and searches. Field drug tests have been known to declare donut crumbs meth and drywall dust cocaine. Yet they're still in use, thanks to their low price point. A costlier apparatus, used to determine blood alcohol levels during sobriety tests, appears to be just as broken as cheap drug tests. Alcotest, made by German medical tech company Draeger, is used by a large number of US law enforcement agencies. Challenges to test results led to Draeger turning code over to defense attorneys, who soon discovered a lot of ...

from the making-its-terrorism-investigations-look-solidly-grounded dept The FBI's throwback to its Martin Luther King Jr.-watching heyday has reached the first stop on its way to its eventual nadir. Deciding backlash against violence perpetrated by law enforcement officers had resulted in too many frightening African Americans organizing, the agency decided to place "Black Identity Extremists" under surveillance, claiming this made-up group would "likely" engage in violence against police officers. So far, the agency has yet to secure a prosecution under this theory of extreme blackness. But it has managed to severely disrupt the life of at least one black male. ...
Pelosi gibberish, bizarre laughing; stares off during brain freeze (Dementia?) Post Date: 2018-05-18 08:20:00 by IbJensen

Whats wrong with Nancy Pelosi? During her weekly press conference, the House Minority Leader whom some speculate will be the next Speaker of the House if Democrats recapture the majority this November was seen uttering gibberish, bizarrely laughing and staring off mid-sentence before re-engaging the press during the appearance. Pelosi accused U.S. farmers of self-inflicted damage, resulting from proposed tariffs by the Trump administration, before having to fix the statement she read from her notes. Farmers are struggling with plummeting prices, great economic uncertainty, and self-inflicted damage of the Trump tariffs. I say self, ...
Missing Files Motivated the Leak of Michael Cohen’s Financial Records [Full Thread] Post Date: 2018-05-18 07:38:01 by Jameson

Last week, several news outlets obtained financial records showing that Michael Cohen, President Trumps personal attorney, had used a shell company to receive payments from various firms with business before the Trump Administration. In the days since, there has been much speculation about who leaked the confidential documents, and the Treasury Departments inspector general has launched a probe to find the source. That source, a law-enforcement official, is speaking publicly for the first time, to The New Yorker, to explain the motivation: the official had grown alarmed after being unable to find two important reports on Cohens financial activity in a government database. ...

For practicing his first amendment right to film in public, an innocent man was held at gunpoint by an officer who feared for his life over the man filming.Mesa, CA Filming the police is entirely legal in every state. However, all too often, we will see police officers overstep their authority and arrest, attack, and assault innocent people for the constitutionally protected act of documenting their behavior in public. A video shared with the Free Thought Project this week shows just how dangerous a cops ignorance of the law can be. In the video below, an entirely innocent man, doing nothing other than practicing his first amendment right to film in public, was assaulted with a ...

Reason by Elizabeth Nolan Brown Protect and Serve Act passes House. File under bipartisan-is-just-another-word-for-both-sides-licking-the-same-boot: majorities of both Democrats and Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives have voted in favor of new hate crime legislation that sets up cops as a protected class. Overall, just 35 House members voted against the bill (H.R. 5698), which isnt far from making it a federal crime to resist arrest. Under the so-called Protect and Serve Act, anyone who injures or attempts to injure a police officer will be guilty of a federal offenseno matter how small the injury and no matter if ...
Republicans Love Torture Post Date: 2018-05-18 06:31:39 by Deckard

Only three Senate Republicans opposed confirmation of Gina Haspel as the new CIA director: Rand Paul of Kentucky, Jeff Flake of Arizona, and John McCain of Arizona (McCain was in Arizona battling brain cancer and could not actually vote against her). Six Democrats, some facing reelection, voted with the majority of Republicans to confirm Bloody Gina. I note: Among those who supported her nomination were six former CIA directors Porter Goss, John Brennan, Leon Panetta, George Tenet, William Webster and Mike Hayden and three former national intelligence directors James Clapper, Mike McConnell and John Negroponte. All despicable creatures. What a surprise.

It is often said that other-izing people overall can be dangerous and other-izing your enemies specifically can be tactically detrimental. For one, it can lead to a false sense of superiority over those people as you assert some kind of imagined genetic advantage. It can also lead to dangerous generalizations of vast groups as you categorize and pigeonhole millions as being exactly the same when this is rationally impossible. However, other-izing is perhaps the only option when faced with a very particular type of person embracing a very particular brand of ideology; other-izing can become a matter of survival. I am of course talking about globalists. Not the low level cronies ...

The 10 professions with the most psychopaths Post Date: 2018-05-17 05:44:21 by Deckard

Business Insider by Lindsay Dodgson Psychopaths are difficult to spot most of the time. Theyre not the Jack the Ripper caricatures you see in films or read about in books. Often, psychopaths appear normal, which makes them hard to identify. In the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, or DSM-5, someone with a psychopathic personality type is defined as having an inflated, grandiose sense of themself, and a knack for manipulating other people. But a diagnosis is rarely simple. One thing psychopaths tend to have in common is the careers they go for. For example, youre likely to find a lot of them in leadership ...

Scott Peterson, the Broward County sheriff's deputy who failed to engage the Parkland high school shooter, is eligible to receive an annual pension in excess of six figures. The Sun Sentinel obtained records from the Florida Department of Management Services showing that Peterson, who retired in the weeks after the March shooting, is due to collect $8,700 per month. That works out to slightly more than $104,000 a year. Peterson, who is 55 years old, will be able to receive that pension for the rest of his life, and Broward County taxpayers will cover 50 percent of his health insurance premiums. Peterson earned more than $101,000 during his final year of service, the Sun Sentinel ...

She's survived the Russian Civil War, the Second World War, the deportation of her people in 1944, and the two Chechen Wars. She also says she met Vincent van Gogh when she was a girl. According to the Russian government, she's the oldest living person in the world, but despite all that time on the planet, she says she's never experienced a single happy day in her life. Koku Istambulova, according to her internal passport, is 128 years old and rapidly approaching 129. The birth date listed on her passport is June 1, 1889, though her age cannot be confirmed by more official government documents because they were lost in the Second Chechen War (1999-2009). Professor Garth Paltridge, formerly a chief scientist with Australias Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) Division of Atmospheric Research, says that the behavior of certain members of the climate science establishment is seriously threatening the publics perception of the professionalism of scientists in general. Many climate scientists are much less sure about man-made global warming than they will admit in public, he says. But rather than reach out to skeptics in order to open up the debate and explore the uncertainties, they have instead closed ranks and rubbished anyone who disagrees with them: Some of the more vocal of the ...

1.The Aristocracy Is Dead
For about a week every year in my childhood, I was a member of one of Americas fading aristocracies. Sometimes around Christmas, more often on the Fourth of July, my family would take up residence at one of my grandparents country clubs in Chicago, Palm Beach, or Asheville, North Carolina. The breakfast buffets were magnificent, and Grandfather was a jovial host, always ready with a familiar story, rarely missing an opportunity for gentle instruction on proper club etiquette. At the age of 11 or 12, I gathered from him, between his puffs of cigar smoke, that we owed our weeks of plenty to Great-Grandfather, Colonel Robert W. Stewart, a Rough ...
