The U.S. mainstream press can easily recognize the dominant and influential role that the military plays in society, so long as they are referring to countries like Pakistan and Egypt. Unfortunately, the same reporters and commentators turn a blind eye to the similar phenomenon here in the United States. For example, the Washington Post writes: “When not in power, [Pakistan’s generals] have exerted outsize control over foreign policy, the economy, and local politics.” The New York Timeswrites: “Even during civilian rule, the country’s generals have wielded enormous power, setting the agenda for the country’s foreign and security policies…. ...

Russia's Putin tells Trump: 'Be my guest in Moscow'

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Friday he had invited Donald Trump to Moscow and that both he and the U.S. president want further summits, despite the uproar in Washington after the two leaders met in Helsinki last week. Following the backlash in the United States over Trump's cordial public tone with Putin at the Helsinki summit, U.S. and Russian officials backed away from a proposal to schedule a follow-up summit in Washington. But speaking to reporters in South Africa, where he was attending a summit of BRICS nations, Putin said another meeting with Trump was still on the agenda. "Regarding our meetings, I understand very well what ...

Georgia man grows pot. Admits it. Jury sends him home [Full Thread]

DUBLIN, Georgia - This article was written by Bill Torpy for our investigative partners at The Atlanta Journal-Constitution and AJC.com.  Javonnie McCoy was growing marijuana when the cops came to his middle Georgia home. He was caught red-handed with it. Almost a pound of it, in fact. He admitted it to police, and later he looked jurors in the eye and said, "Yep, it was mine. I used it as medicine." The jurors let him go. He was minding his own business and wasn’t hurting anybody, they reasoned. He just doesn’t belong in prison. The jury’s decision earlier this month in Dublin, Georgia, may have been due to a muddled prosecution of a muddy case. Or it may ...

If It Weren’t for These 8 Myths American Society Would Collapse
Post Date: 2018-07-27 15:17:20 by Deckard

This article originally appeared on Truth Dig. Our society should’ve collapsed by now. You know that, right? No society should function with this level of inequality (with the possible exception of one of those prison planets in a “Star Wars” movie). Sixty-three percent of Americans can’t afford a $500 emergency. Yet Amazon head Jeff Bezos is now worth a record $141 billion. He could literally end world hunger for multiple years and still have more money left over than he could ever spend on himself.Worldwide, one in 10 people only make $2 a day. Do you know how long it would take one of those people to make the same amount as Jeff Bezos has? ...

New Poll Reveals the Extent of The Democrats’ Impending Doom!

There seems to be little doubt left that the democratic party did real damage to itself during the 2016 presidential election, not to mention the fact that their response to their self-inflicted pain was less than ethical as well. You see, the democrats are attempting to blame Russia for their embarrassing loss in 2016, claiming that Russian intelligence assets were responsible for leaking emails from within the Hillary Clinton campaign that outlined several immoral and inexcusable actions being undertaking the by the former First Lady. Even if this were true, how can you blame Russia for exposing the truth?  The Kremlin gave the American people the information necessary to make ...

East Pittsburgh Shooting: A Sober Look at a True Tragedy

As a retired cop, I see my current calling as speaking about, writing about, and discussing the causes and effects of de-policing in America. Another part of my job is to defend law enforcement officers who are unfairly attacked, which leads to de- policing. I also try to make complex calls more understandable to the public from one police officer’s perspective. Remember, in most professions, when a person makes an honest mistake a steak is overcooked, numbers are added incorrectly, or mail is delivered to the wrong address. If cops make mistakes, people can die. Having said this, the recent tragic shooting of a black 17-year-old by a white police officer in East Pittsburgh, ...

Cop Looking at His Phone Plows Into Cyclist Sitting at a Stop Sign [Full Thread]

Peculiar, MO — A rather shocking video was uploaded to YouTube this week by a cyclist wearing a helmet camera who filmed a distracted police officer ram him head on as he waited at a stop sign. Officer Wallace with the Peculiar police department was looking down at his phone while turning left and never saw Joe Fas sitting there on his bicycle. As Fas sat at the stop sign, waiting to turn, his helmet camera showed him looking right and then looking left. All of the sudden, officer Wallace, driving his police SUV, marked unit 396, turns left—into the wrong lane—and slams into Fas who couldn’t get out of the way fast enough. “Whoa! Whoa!” Fas screamed as officer ...

DMV Worker Literally Slept on the Job for Nearly 4 Years

An employee responsible for logging changes in address and vehicle ownership at the California DMV slept at least three hours a day at her desk for nearly four years—and still has a job. The woman's 2,200 hours spent napping between February 2014 and December 2017 meant she completed less than half of her expected amount of work and cost the state more than $40,000, according to a worker misconduct report released Tuesday by the state's auditor. Per USA Today, the woman's doctor told the DMV that she was unable to perform her work duties, though a later doctor's note said the opposite. The employee continues to work for the state, per the Sacramento Bee.

Was Jesus a Socialist?

Was Jesus a socialist? Was he revolting against wealth and money itself? Or was he actually challenging people who use the violence of the state to prosper? I have my own working framework for how to apply Jesus’s role model in politics and economics. Nevertheless, I recently spoke with fellow-travelers theologian David Bentley Hart (view our discussion here) and economist Jerry Bowyer (watch the interview here) to invite critical dialog for our society. Dr. Hart and Bowyer share my interest in the late René Girard’s sweeping anthropological account for the origins of collective violence. Girard posits that humans ape their neighbors’ desires which leads to contagious ...

Cohen willing to testify that Trump approved 2016 meeting with Russians

President Trump’s former personal lawyer Michael Cohen is willing to testify to Special Council Robert Mueller that Trump was aware of an infamous June 2016 meeting with Russian operatives at Trump Tower before it happened. Cohen claims Trump knew and approved of the meeting where Russians offered “dirt” on then-candidate Hillary Clinton — despite Trump’s repeated denials that he was aware it took place. Cohen was present when Trump was informed by his son, Donald Trump Jr., that the offer had been made, the source said. President Trump claimed he “didn’t know anything about the meeting” because “nobody told me” about it. During the ...

Trump gets his big moment to boast about trade war

NEW YORK — President Donald Trump is likely to get one of the best headlines of his presidency on Friday with a highly tweetable report expected to show the U.S. economy grew at its fastest rate in years. But the big number risks becoming fool’s gold. Economists warn that Trump’s trade war sped up U.S. exports in the second quarter as China and other countries rushed to snap up American soybeans and other products ahead of impending tariffs, lifting growth in ways likely to be reversed in the coming months. And as Trump continues to argue that the strong economy and stock market offer him leeway to press his aggressive approach, his trade battles could wind up slowing an ...

Trump's religious freedom squad promises to deliver

President Donald Trump’s impulsive foreign policy has many critics but at least one bright spot — he’s winning plaudits from the evangelical right and even some Democrats for his push on religious freedom. Trump's religious freedom squad — including Vice President Mike Pence, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Ambassador at Large Sam Brownback, and national security adviser John Bolton, a former member of the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom, or USCIRF — has promised to deploy a stockpile of little-used legal tools to shame and sanction countries they view as interfering with the practice of religion. On Thursday, as the U.S. welcomed a ...

Trump's right: The economy is doing well and he deserves some credit

Washington (CNN)President Donald Trump thinks he's overdue some credit for steering the strongest economy on the planet -- and he's probably right. Fresh from a trip to the Midwestern heartlands, the President is making the very best possible case for his administration as the pace heats up ahead of the midterm elections. He's belting out a strong economic message with a fervor that Democrats have yet to match this election cycle. Presidents usually get too much blame when the economy is doing badly, since downturns are often caused by outside shocks or cyclical factors, but that also gives them a chance to crow when things are going full steam ahead. Trump is not the kind ...

Osan Air Base, South Korea (CNN)A US Air Force plane carrying what is believed to be the remains of US troops killed during the Korean War some 65 years ago arrived in Osan Air Base in South Korea on Friday morning. Troops from various nations serving in South Korea under the United Nations Command presented an honor guard before the plane, as white-gloved troops in different uniforms descended the ramp of the US Air Force C-17, carefully holding cases wrapped in the UN flag. The cases were transferred to silver minivans waiting on the runway. The C-17 had left Osan Air Base earlier Friday to fly to the city of Wonsan, North Korea, before completing the return journey, the White House ...

While the Silk Road founder's reputation has already been sullied by the untried accusations, the feds give up on those charges after Supreme Court declines to hear Ulbricht's appeal on his original conviction and sentencing.Having reported on Ross Ulbricht's prosecution since the beginning, I've found a startlingly large number of people who didn't follow the case closely believe his life sentence without parole for acts connected with launching the darkweb sales site Silk Road was because he was convicted for attempting to pay for the murder of people who'd stolen from or threatened him. Michael Drejka’s decision to shoot was inconsistent with Florida’s self-defense law.Markeis McGlockton and Michael Drejka both overreacted during their brief, fatal encounter in the parking lot of a Florida convenience store last week. McGlockton overreacted by pushing Drejka to the ground, and Drejka overreacted by drawing a pistol and shooting McGlockton in the chest. Although it is hard to see how Drejka's use of lethal force could have been justified, Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri declined to arrest him, claiming his hands were tied by Florida's Stand Your Ground law. But that is not true, and Gualtieri's misrepresentation of the law has renewed misguided ...

The government wouldn’t abuse us if we’d stop making it upset, according to the one-time civil liberties advocacy group. What purpose is served by the American Civil Liberties Union? I know that the words "civil liberties" appear right there in the name, but it's increasingly difficult to take that seriously as the organization's mission. Just a month after leaked internal ACLU case-selection guidelines revealed the organization to be stepping back from viewpoint-neutral advocacy of free speech rights, the ACLU claims that vigorous advocacy for self-defense rights is to blame for government expansion of the security state. "Mass shootings create a pervasive ...

Manifestos are not meant to be sophisticated things. They are declarations, not dissertations. To write a manifesto is to issue a piercing scream, a denunciation of all the world’s wrongs and a rousing call to arms. The manifesto is no place for nuance or pragmatism, for thinking things through and resolving differences. The manifesto is the medium of one who has already worked everything out and is compelled to shout it to the world. Oddly enough, the manifesto appears to have switched sides over the last century. Once they were the provenance the revolutionary left, from the Communists to the Surrealists. But since the 1970s, it has principally been libertarians cranking them out. ...
