We start by identifying that the English term "classical" finds its etymological roots in the Latin adjective classicus which referred to the highest class of Ancient Roman citizens. “Classic” also denoted the Romans’ adoration of all things considered timeless by the Greeks like philosophy, architecture, drama, mythology, and the visual arts. Later, these terms referred to distinguished literary figures as well. So, we see that from inception the word described the best, most excellent, most revered, and most refined. The bureaucrats in charge after WWII, fearing a return to the banker/government-caused Great Depression, made a fatal decision. Since it had apparently finally gotten the U.S. out of that disaster, enshrined in National Security Council Report 68 (NSC-68), signed by president Harry S Truman on September 30, 1950, they decided to continue using the manufacture of military materials to pump the economy. Ten years later, President and Five-star General Dwight Eisenhower caught a glimpse of the result and warned us like this – – – Click for Full Text!

It should come as no surprise that an enterprising San Franciscan came up with the idea to host a "doom loop" tour of the moldering city on a hill. The plot twist is that Alex Ludlum, who put together the tour, canceled and refunded tickets for his "Downtown Doom Loop Walking Tour" before its intended Aug. 26 debut. That would be the weekend Nordstrom shuttered its flagship store in downtown San Francisco. Click for Full Text!

The U.S. Navy continues to order cumbersome warships despite facing an urgent demand to embrace new technologies and weapons systems to combat the rising threat from China, The New York Times reported. Navy personnel, analysts, and current and former officials remain tied to political and economic forces that have produced jobs-driven procurement policies resulting in warships that may not be ideally suited for future missions, The New York Times reported Monday. Lawmakers return to Washington this week with House and Senate leaders saying a short-term continuing resolution would buy time to negotiate a full-year spending deal and avoid a government shutdown. Some House conservatives, though, are insisting certain demands be included in any spending deal. They've even said a shutdown might not be a bad thing. Click for Full Text!

Canada Shut Its Land Border to Asylum Seekers. More Refugees Came Anyway
Post Date: 2023-09-03 21:17:25 by Charles_Byrd

A deal Canada struck this year to stem the flow of asylum seekers entering from the U.S. was, at first glance, a quick success: Within days, the number of people caught at unofficial crossings along the border dwindled to a trickle. But five months later, the overall number of people filing refugee claims in Canada has risen instead of falling. Many now come by air, while others sneak across the border and hide until they can apply for asylum without fear of being sent back, people working with migrants told Reuters. Click for Full Text!

Carlton Lewis Exonerated Following 31 Years of Wrongful Conviction for Second-degree Murder in Syracuse, NY

Carlton Lewis was exonerated today in Syracuse, New York, more than three decades after he was wrongly convicted and incarcerated for second- degree murder in 1992. New DNA testing results exclude Mr. Lewis from the scene of the crime and confirm his continued assertion of innocence. No crime scene evidence links Mr. Lewis to the murder. Three common contributing factors to wrongful conviction were present in the prosecution’s case against Mr. Lewis in 1992: the testimony of an incentivized witness; a false confession, and hair microscopy – a forensic technique that the Federal Bureau of Investigation has acknowledged leads to inaccurate results and wrongful convictions. Sadistic California Cops Bragged About ‘Violating Civil Rights’

IN THE “THIN blue line” myth, cops stand in the breach between civilization and chaos. But what happens when these same police become agents of wanton violence? A new federal indictment pulls back the curtain on sadistic behavior by cops in northern California, who allegedly brutalized residents — with K-9 dog bites or by shooting them with “less lethal” projectiles — and even bragged of breaching their civil rights. The charging document, filed Aug. 16, accuses a trio of Antioch Police Department officers with conspiracy “to injure, oppress, threaten, and intimidate” city residents and to deprive them of the constitutional right to be free of ...

Annalyse Gosselin would like a new coat. Hers is ripped, and its zipper doesn’t work anymore. She’d also like a new phone and to eat at a restaurant one of these days— the last time she dined out was in May, on her 20th birthday—but can’t afford those things either. Gosselin works two jobs, at a grocery store and part-time as a nursing assistant, but she says that nets her less than $20,000 a year. That isn’t nearly enough to thrive where she lives in Boston, where the median one-bedroom apartment rents for about $3,000 a month. Click for Full Text!
