Hurricane Dorian was pulling away from the Caribbean on Wednesday evening, embarking on a four- to five-day journey that will take it across near-ideal territory for strengthening. By this weekend, Dorian is likely to be a major hurricane threatening Floridas Atlantic coast, and it may plow onward into the Gulf of Mexico next week. Dorian muscled its way to hurricane strength on Wednesday with a burst of thunderstorms (convection) wrapping around a newly formed eye. Originally expected to move somewhere between the eastern Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico, Dorian ended up tracking well to the east, in part because its center reformed 60 miles to the north beneath intense convection ...

The right to speak guaranteed by the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution includes the right to voice opinions, criticize others, and comment on matters of public interest. It also protects the use of hyperbole and extreme statements when it is clear these are rhetorical ploys. Accordingly, you can safely state your opinion that others are inept, stupid, jerks, failures, etc. even though these statements might hurt the subject's feelings or diminish their reputations. Such terms represent what is called "pure opinions" because they can't be proven true or false. As a result, they cannot form the basis for a defamation claim. This is not to say that every statement ...

New York Post by Yaron Steinbuch A New Hampshire woman is pissed off with the state Department of Motor Vehicles, which told her to surrender her vanity license plate because of a common parental phrase PB4WEGO. Wendy Auger received a letter from the DMV informing her to turn in the plate, which she has had for 15 years, because phrases involving bodily functions are forbidden, according to seacoastline.com. The bartender from the Gonic neighborhood of Rochester, NH, is fighting the bladder-related ban on the phrase Pee before we go because she believes its a free speech matter. The American Gulag: Brick by Brick, Our Prison Walls Get More Oppressive by the Day Post Date: 2019-08-29 06:07:42 by Deckard

"The exile of prisoners to a distant place, where they can pay their debt to society, make themselves useful, and not contaminate others with their ideas or their criminal acts, is a practice as old as civilization itself. The rulers of ancient Rome and Greece sent their dissidents off to distant colonies. Socrates chose death over the torment of exile from Athens. The poet Ovid was exiled to a fetid port on the Black Sea. Anne Applebaum, Gulag: A History This is how freedom dies. This is how you condition a populace to life as prisoners in a police state: by brainwashing them into believing they are free so that they will march in lockstep with the state and ...
A Nonemergency of His Own Making Post Date: 2019-08-29 06:01:08 by Deckard

Late last week, President Donald Trump issued a tweet in which he purported to order American businesses to cease doing work with their employees and contract partners in China. He claimed he was exercising presidential powers pursuant to what he contended was the national emergency surrounding the trading relationship between the United States and China. Since he did not declare a national emergency, he did not notify Congress and give it the opportunity to ratify or reject his executive orders. In fact, he didnt even sign any executive orders on this. He merely ordered American businesses in a tweet to cease all commercial activities with anyone in China. It appears that no American ...
The False Premises of the Ruling Against Johnson & Johnson Post Date: 2019-08-29 05:40:52 by Deckard

Blaming opioid makers for the "opioid crisis" may be emotionally satisfying, but the reality is more complicated. (K-State/Flickr) This week an Oklahoma judge ruled that Johnson & Johnson should pay $572 million to "abate" a "public nuisance" the company created in that state by minimizing the hazards and overselling the benefits of prescription opioids. A few months ago, a North Dakota judge rejected a very similar claim against Purdue Pharma under a nearly identical "public nuisance" statute. The difference between those two decisions partly reflects the difference between broad and narrow understandings of "public nuisance." But the ...

Panic At The DNC: General Feeling Is That Trump Is Just Killing Them On All Fronts Post Date: 2019-08-28 23:24:38 by Tooconservative

President Trump calls them suppression polls, the endless surveys the liberal media puts out there showing how the support for this administration is in the toilet. Its meant to demoralize his base. It didnt work in 2016 and it wont work in 2020. The polls were wrong. Right now, 2020 general election polling is trash. Its worthless. Its way too early. Everyone knows thatand even some Democrats would admit that theyre not going to win by a nine-point of double-digit margin next year. If anything, the media just reminds Trump voters that they need to vote next year. In the meantime, the Democratic Party has a three-way race at the top for the 2020 ...

Pennsylvania state Dems slam Republicans prayer as offensive, bigoted By Lukas Mikelionis | Fox News Pennsylvania state Democrats branded as offensive a Republicans decision Monday to open a voting session with a prayer and a thank-you to President Trump for supporting Israel, with some Dems claiming to be horrified by the remarks and accusing the female lawmaker of Islamophobia. Governor Wolfs official Islamic conversation has not yet been made public, other than these photographs circulating on social media. It has become evident through the photographs that Wolf has in fact already converted. According to Islam it is not permissible for a non-Muslim to pray either in the ranks or on his own. It is required that one converts to Islam before he prays, then to purify himself [by doing ghusl], and then fulfil the conditions of prayer. He is included in the obligation of prayer, and he is to be punished if he does not become Muslim and pray, but it will not be accepted from him unless he enters Islam.

Turkey looking to buy Russian stealth fighters Post Date: 2019-08-28 18:19:25 by Tooconservative

After we canceled the sale of our F-35 fighter jets to Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan wasted no time making good on his threat to take his business to the Russians. Since the bone of contention leading to this decision was Turkeys move to buy the S-400 missile system from the Russians, I suppose this shouldnt come as too much of a surprise. Now that potential deal seems to be taking shape as Erdogan is viewing demonstrations of the Russian Su-57 fighter at an air show taking place near Moscow. (Time) President Vladimir Putin showed off Russias latest stealth warplane to his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan, whos been barred from buying a new U.S. fighter jet ...

The Survival of Iggy Pop Post Date: 2019-08-28 10:54:28 by Deckard

n late July, in a brief window between professional appointments, Iggy Pop drove to the mouth of Biscayne Bay, so that he could bob in its tropical waters. In 1995, he had bought what he described as a very seedy condo in Miami, and he has had a home in the city ever since. The extremity of the placeit is both environmentally tenuous and aesthetically vulgarseems to suit Pop, who, in the late nineteen-sixties, as a member of the Stooges, helped invent and refine punk rock, a genre of music so menacing and physically savage that it is sometimes shocking that Pop has made it to the age of seventy-two. After he moved to Miami, he started swimming every day. I ...
Donald Trump, Democratic Dictator Post Date: 2019-08-28 10:16:06 by Deckard

Some people think that the United States is safe from dictatorship because the country is a democracy. Its only in totalitarian countries, they hold, that people are subject to dictatorship.Nothing could be further from the truth. Such people are confusing how a ruler gets elected with the powers that the ruler has after being elected. A democratically elected ruler can wield and exercise dictatorial powers. Case in point: President Donald Trump. He is the democratically elected president of the United States. He also wields and exercises dictatorial power over the American people. The system of government that the Framers established with the Constitution provided for three branches ...

By MassPrivateI It is no longer speculation, American law enforcement has been lying to the public about the expansion of CCTV camera surveillance. A recent report released by Comparitech confirmed what I have been warning people about for years: American law enforcement has become a world leader in spying on its citizens. Cities in China are under the heaviest CCTV surveillance in the world, according to a new analysis by Comparitech. However, some residents living in cities across the US, UK, UAE, Australia, and India will also find themselves surrounded by a large number of watchful eyes, as our look at the number of public CCTV cameras in 120 cities worldwide found. According to ...

Its for their own good, of course! A New Jersey police department has unveiled technology that will allow 911 operators to stream video from callers smartphones. For the time being, callers have to turn on the live video stream, meaning they are consenting and giving the police permission to see whats happening as they call. This is the first step to automatic surveillance upon calling people who are assumed to be there to help. According to RT, the technology allows the 911 operators to use the phones camera and microphone. This is the first step down a very slippery slope. Police Drop Crime Prediction Software, But Not Because Its Orwellian ...
Are Atheists Right? Is Faith the Absence of Reason/Evidence? Post Date: 2019-08-28 08:44:15 by A K A Stone

Atheists often accuse Christians of believing things or having faith without evidence and like to remind them of the old adage: faith is believing what you know is not true. In the eyes of many atheists, faith has become a buzzword for putting your intellect out of gear and for believing something without any reason or evidence for it (i.e., blind faith). For example, atheist and scientist Sam Harris, author of The End of Faith, argues that faith is separate from reason and is the absence of evidence: Faith is nothing more than the license that religious people give one another to believe such propositions when reasons fail. . . . When we find reliable ...

It appears that Jeffrey Epstein had really good timing when he, according to New York Chief Medical Examiner Barbara Sampson, decided to hang himself in his Manhattan jail cell the morning of August 10th crushing bones in his neck which can fracture during hangings, but are typically broken during homicide by strangulation. Not only was his cellmate moved out the day before he died, overworked prison guards reportedly fell asleep missing their assigned 30-minute checks on the highest profile inmate in the Metropolitan Correctional Center (MCC).
