Pentagon: Ukraine Training, Support, Exempt From Shutdown

The Pentagon's training and support for Ukraine's military will be exempt from a government shutdown if lawmakers can't agree on a deal to keep funding the government to allow operations to continue without being interrupted. "Operation Atlantic Resolve is an excepted activity under a government lapse in appropriations," Defense Department spokesperson Chris Sherwood told Politico on Thursday afternoon after Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, Joint Chiefs Chair Gen. Mark Milley, and other Pentagon leaders. Click for Full Text!

Beware of Mistaking Artifacts for Economic Realities

America runs a trade deficit during some period – say, a month – whenever the dollar value of that period’s imports exceeds the dollar value of that period’s exports. Unfortunately, the name given to this situation – “trade deficit” – is a never-ending source of deep confusion, sometimes even among economists. A few years ago, Scott Sumner appropriately scolded some prominent economists for their shallow thinking about the so-called trade deficit. Specifically, Sumner noted that these economists mistake human-constructed accounting categories for real and essential economic phenomena. We can clarify Sumner’s concern by elaborating on one of his ...

The Gift That Keeps On Giving

Last week, North Korea’s Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un visited Russia’s President Vladimir Putin. The meeting was serious, in contrast to their perfunctory summit four years ago. This time Moscow was the suitor, seeking artillery shells, missiles, and perhaps more for its war against Ukraine. American commentators chortled at the once grand Russian state’s supplications to such an isolated and impoverished regime. Yet whatever embarrassment Putin may feel is undoubtedly minor compared to the potential benefits for his government. Russia already outproduces Ukraine, Europe, and the U.S. in critical materiel, and is seeking to increase its edge, possibly to prepare another ...

DOJ drops lawsuit against state for stacking shipping containers on border

The Department of Justice (DOJ) dropped its lawsuit against Arizona over its placement of shipping containers on the Mexico border, it announced Thursday. Then-Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey issued an executive order in 2022 to fill a gap in the border wall with double-stacked shipping containers, and filed a lawsuit for Arizona’s right to do so against the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation and the U.S. Forest Service when told to stop, according to AZ Family. Arizona removed the containers and “completed extensive remediation work on National Forest lands that had been damaged” after the DOJ filed its own lawsuit in December, according to the DOJ. Fact Checking Biden’s UN Speech: Words Versus Action
Post Date: 2023-09-23 01:37:12 by Charles_Byrd

US President Joe Biden’s speech before the General Assembly on September 19 spent surprisingly little time on Russia and the war in Ukraine and, in many ways, hit many of the right notes with its praise of “Sovereignty, territorial integrity, human rights . . . the core tenets of the U.N. Charter, the pillars of peaceful relations among nations. . ..” But America’s past performance on these very issues weaken the persuasiveness and sincerity of the appeal. The opening remarks of Biden’s speech demonstrated America’s tone deafness to the demands of the global majority and the rising nonaligned multipolar movement. His comment that “As president of the ...

Blue-state governor pressured Democrats to shelve transgender bill

The office of Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom of California pressured the state legislature’s LGBTQ caucus to shelve a bill on transgender issues amid concerns that it would provoke a backlash from parental rights groups, according to a report by Politico. Several school boards across California, at the urging of parents opposed to transgender ideology, have recently adopted policies that require parental notification if a child uses pronouns or wears the attire of a gender disjunct from their biological sex. After LGBTQ Democratic state legislators planned to introduce a bill that would have required parental notification only with a child’s consent, Newsom’s advisers ...

Review: White House Plumbers Delivers an Amusing Take on Watergate
Post Date: 2023-09-23 01:26:58 by Charles_Byrd

HBO's White House Plumbers is a fictionalized account of the events before, during, and after the notorious break-in and wiretapping of the Democratic National Committee's headquarters at the Watergate complex during President Richard Nixon's reelection bid in 1972. The show adheres to the historical record in its way, but the twist is how it frames the entire affair as a madcap farce more like The Naked Gun than All the President's Men. Nixon aides E. Howard Hunt (Woody Harrelson) and G. Gordon Liddy (Justin Theroux), known as "plumbers" since they were tasked with shutting off leaks (of information), each have extensive spycraft résumés yet caper ...

Ukraine will work with American defense companies to co-produce weapons for the fight against Russia’s invasion, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced Friday as he closed out a visit to Washington. Zelenskyy stopped at the White House, the Pentagon and Congress on Thursday, making his appeal to the U.S. government for continued security assistance as opposition in Congress to funding Ukraine’s defense appears to strengthen. In a daily address to Ukrainians posted on the presidential website Friday morning, Zelenskyy made the case the weapons deal agreed to on that trip would boost Ukraine’s air defense capabilities and create jobs for both Americans and ...

The Justice Department unsealed an indictment against Menendez and his wife, Nadine, on three counts Friday, according to a release by the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York. Menendez and his wife allegedly received cash and gold bars from three New Jersey businessmen in return for aiding the Egyptian government, according to the indictment. Click for Full Text!

Houston Police Arrested an Animal Rights Protester and Detained Him for 16 Hours, Lawsuit Says

Animal rights activists Daraius Dubash and Faraz Harsini were peacefully demonstrating in a Houston, Texas, public park when park employees demanded they leave. When Dubash insisted that the pair had a First Amendment right to protest, officials called the police, who arrested Dubash and charged him with criminal trespass. While Dubash's charge was eventually dismissed, the pair have now filed a First Amendment lawsuit against the city, arguing that city police clearly violated their Constitutional rights. Keep Your Personal Life Personal

We all know that too much social media is deeply unhealthy. Yet its addictive entertainment keeps so many of us ensnared in daily use—so much so that it has brought about the death of personal life. In our modern culture, it is common and even encouraged to put personal experiences, updates, opinions, and even emotional breakdowns onto public platforms for anyone to see. But is this really how we should be treating our personal lives? What do we lose when we share so much of ourselves online? And what do we gain when we don’t? Click for Full Text!

The Founders and the Constitution: Gouverneur Morris

Gouverneur Morris was a “chick magnet.” He was tall, handsome, witty, and rich. Even scalding damage to his right arm, loss of his lower leg in a traffic accident, and reliance on a wooden prosthesis for walking didn’t impair his success with women. Part of his attractiveness to women seems to have been a sincere regard for them. He was to express this regard in the final draft of the Constitution. Click for Full Text!

Senate ditches dress code as Fetterman and others choose casual clothes

The stuffy Senate is now a bit less formal. Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said Monday that staff for the chamber’s Sergeant-at-Arms — the Senate’s official clothes police — will no longer enforce a dress code on the Senate floor. The change comes after Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman has been unapologetically wearing shorts as he goes about his duties, voting from doorways so he doesn’t get in trouble for his more casual attire. Click for Full Text!

"Social Justice" Is Neither Social nor Just

Thomas Sowell has given us a penetrating criticism of the approach to justice taken by many political philosophers, especially John Rawls and his innumerable followers. He says that they construct an image of the way society ought to be but fail to ask whether their plans are feasible. His criticism is well-taken, although he does not offer an adequate account of the rights that people have. Click for Full Text!

Dozens of nations to sign UN ocean treaty but implementation still awaits

A new UN treaty to protect the world's oceans is expected to be signed by dozens of countries on Wednesday, another step in the efforts to reverse the damage done to fragile marine environments by overfishing and other human activities. The global pact to conserve biodiversity on the high seas was finally agreed in March and formally adopted by the United Nations in June. It is seen as a crucial tool to meet a target agreed last year to protect 30% of the earth's land and sea by 2030, known as "30 by 30". Click for Full Text!
