New York Forces Websites To Monitor 'Hateful' Speech. A New Lawsuit Says This Violates the First Amendment.
Post Date: 2022-12-06 20:20:54 by Charles_Byrd

In New York, websites and apps are required to have a plan to address "hateful conduct" on their platforms. A new lawsuit is seeking to change that. On Thursday, the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE) filed a lawsuit on behalf of two online platforms, Rumble and Locals, as well as Eugene Volokh, a UCLA law professor who runs the blog The Volokh Conspiracy (which is hosted by Reason.) FIRE claims that a New York law mandating that online platforms provide mechanisms for reporting "hateful" speech violates the First Amendment. Click for Full Text!

Congressional negotiators are making a dash to scrounge together a bipartisan deal on how to fund the federal government for fiscal 2023, with just weeks on the clock until a looming shutdown deadline. Sen. John Thune (R-S.D.) told The Hill on Wednesday that top negotiators on both sides have begun exchanging top-line figures for a potential omnibus funding package, but he added “it’s still an open question” whether Congress will pass such a bill next month. An EU embargo on Russian oil and a Western-imposed price cap on Russian oil came into effect on Monday as Moscow said it is preparing a response to the policies. The US led the push to impose a price cap on Russian oil, and the EU agreed to set it at $60 per barrel, or at least 5% below market value. The EU embargo on Russian oil also prohibits issuing insurance for Russian oil shipments unless the crude is sold at or below the cap. Click for Full Text!

Born on the Tenth of January

If Tom Cruise was Born on the Fourth of July, then he can thank Thomas Paine, who can be said to have been born on January 10, 1776, with the publication of his incendiary essay Common Sense. In this pamphlet, which he priced cheaply (at two shillings), Paine argued passionately for independence from England, and he wrote in a direct style that readers could understand. Common Sense relieved the political constipation of the Second Continental Congress, which was stalled between reconciliation and independence. The seventy-seven-page pamphlet blasphemed the English king as a royal brute and obliterated the arguments opposing independence. Furthermore, it presented the issues in terms of ...

Word and Sacrament: The marks of the church
Post Date: 2022-12-06 20:11:35 by Charles_Byrd

The LCMS seeks church fellowship with churches around the world who clearly confess and hold to the “marks” of the church. Having “faith” or being a pious person is not a sufficient mark upon which the church and its unity depend. Faith is unseen. The appearance of it can be faked, or it can contain errors. The true “marks” of the church are evident to all and provide sufficient grounds to identify the presence of true fellowship. As Luther notes, even when they are present but obscured by false teaching or belief, they still gather Christians. Article VII of the Augsburg Confession defines the marks of the church as the “pure” preaching of the ...

Liberal media watching the two-and-a-half-hour oral arguments in 303 Creative LLC v. Elenis on Monday concluded that Lorie Smith is likely to prevail in her preemptive lawsuit against Colorado’s anti-discrimination law and the state agency attempting to enforce it. Reuters concluded that the high court “leans toward web designer” while Colorado’s liberal CPR News headlined: “Supreme Court seems poised to side with Colorado web Designer in 303 Creative case.” CPR reluctantly added that the high court is likely to rule “that creative businesses [like Lorie Smith’s] would be protected by the 1st Amendment.” Click for Full Text!

President Joe Biden will visit the site of a new semiconductor manufacturing facility in Arizona on Tuesday afternoon to tout what the White House sees as proof that it is solving global worries about high- tech supply chains with expensive subsidies and new industrial policy. In reality, however, semiconductor manufacturers don't need more government handouts. They need less government getting in the way. Click for Full Text!

Supreme Court Debates Whether Web Designers Can Be Forced To Make Gay Wedding Pages
Post Date: 2022-12-06 19:57:07 by Charles_Byrd

Whether designing a webpage for customers counts as speech and therefore whether a designer could be compelled by Colorado law to design wedding pages for same-sex couples took center stage before the Supreme Court this morning. Creative 303 LLC vs. Elenis came before the Court this morning and brought with it a tangled thicket of competing Supreme Court precedents about when the government can compel businesses or institutions to pass along messages or ideas they object to. At the heart of this case, Lorie Smith, owner of Creative 303 LLC, wants to design web pages for weddings. But she has religious objections to same-sex marriage and doesn't want to design pages to celebrate gay ...

Life insurance companies sound DEATH ALERT warnings over nearly 100,000 excess deaths per month happening right now in the USA

There are nearly 100,000 excess deaths happening per month in the USA right now, according to life insurance companies that are sounding the alarm over what Dr. Robert Malone calls a “mass casualty event” that’s unfolding due to covid vaccines. This is a red alert situation unfolding right in front of us. The human race is being slaughtered through the injection of “clot shots” that are deliberately designed to reduce global population through death and infertility. All the politicians, scientists, regulators and journalists who are in on this are committing genocidal crimes against humanity, and they are even targeting children. Click for Full Text!

According to a Pentagon fact sheet released at the end of November, the US has sent Ukraine 924,000 155mm artillery rounds to Ukraine since February 24. The US currently makes 14,000 155mm rounds each month, but the Army is set to ramp that up. Click for Full Text!

WSJ: US Secretly Limited Range of Weapons Sent to Ukraine

The Department of Defense secretly altered the most advanced weapons systems the US has transferred to Ukraine. The change prevented the platform from firing long-range munitions, according to the Wall Street Journal. The White House has sent 20 High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS) to Ukraine over the past six months, out of a total of 38 units authorized for Kiev. Without telling their Ukrainian counterparts, the Pentagon outfitted the systems with a component to prevent them from firing munitions with a range of over 50 miles. Click for Full Text!

Imagining a Revived, Twenty-First Century Capitalism
Post Date: 2022-12-06 19:42:29 by Charles_Byrd

The death of capitalism has been a common topic of conversation lately. Millennials seem resigned to it, the younger generations can’t wait for it. Bastions of global capitalism—alleged capitalism—such as the World Economic Forum in Davos are quite eagerly promoting the concept of post- capitalism, and Wall Street for whatever its reasons follows in lockstep. Whether it’s socialism, localism, techno-feudalism, red anarchism, or state capitalism, whatever is advanced as the replacement for capitalism includes a firm rejection of markets and their role in social organization. Across the political spectrum, the voices of the early twenty-first century are calling for ...

US intelligence experts have said they expect a "reduced tempo" in fighting in Ukraine to last several months, with both sides looking to prepare for a counter-offensive after the winter. The Director of National Intelligence said that while this might be the case, there is no evidence of a reduced Ukrainian will to resist and morale hasn't faded, despite persistent Russian attacks on the country's energy infrastructure. Ukraine Says Oil-Price Cap Won’t Dent Russia’s Ability to Fund War

KYIV, Ukraine—Ukraine denounced a price cap on Russian oil agreed to by the U.S. and its allies as a “weak” measure that would fail to deprive Russia’s military machine of funds, as Moscow said it could stop supplying consumers in response. The Group of Seven agreed Friday to cap the price of Russian oil at $60 a barrel, moving forward with an unprecedented sanction against one of the world’s largest producers following its invasion of Ukraine. Russia Rejects EU’s $60 Oil Price Cap

Russia on Saturday rejected the EU’s decision to impose a price cap on Russian oil for $60 per barrel and warned it will cut off any country that endorses the cap. The EU’s ban on Russian oil will take effect on Monday, and the idea of the cap is so European insurance and other services can continue for Russian oil shipments if the crude is sold at the $60 limit. But Russia has warned since the plan was first discussed by the US and G7 that it wouldn’t comply. Click for Full Text!

Old Testament: Isaiah 7:10-17 (Advent 4: Series A)

This is a great text to take us one step deeper into trusting God during the season of Advent. First, some background information. The context for this section of scripture can be found in 2 Kings 16 where political and military trouble surrounds Ahaz in the year 735 BC. The Northern Kingdom together with Syria sought an alliance with Judah against Tiglath-Pileser III who was advancing with his Assyrian troops onto their lands. Israel had already suffered defeat from the Assyrians and knew they needed more help to resist them. So, with threats from the Assyrians and warnings that he had better capitulate to this coalition, Isaiah comes to offer Ahaz the most gracious alternate proposal from ...

Gospel: Matthew 1:18-25 (Advent 4: Series A)

he Gospel reading for this last Sunday in Advent tells the other version of the Christmas story. “Now the birth of Jesus took place in this way...” (verse 18). Unlike Luke, Matthew makes no mention of a census or shepherds or multitudes of angels. Instead, he tells of a scandalous pregnancy, a quietly planned divorce, and a dream-induced change of plans. This is Christmas from Joseph’s point of view. We do not know much about Joseph. He was a descendent of David (Åἱὸ ”±Å¯´ – son of David) and a good (´¯º±¹¿Â – righteous) man. He also seems to have been thoughtful. He ...

The Woman Who Spearheaded Prohibition's Repeal

The person with the greatest claim to have ended Prohibition just might be Pauline Sabin. As we celebrate Repeal Day today, she deserves a toast. As an upper-class divorcée who started a successful interior design business, Sabin was sure to be the subject of at least some controversy in early-20th-century America. But it was in politics that she really made her mark. Sabin believed women should be active within political parties and not confine themselves to causes viewed as exclusively the preserve of women. Thanks to her charm, her fundraising abilities, and her political skill, Sabin quickly became one of the most influential women in the GOP. With Henrietta Wells Livermore, she ...
