I’m a consumer of public broadcasting. I’m currently subscribing to Passport, PBS’s streaming app, so I can catch up on all the Ken Burns documentaries. And I used to enjoy NPR news and other programming: the longform, in depth reporting on a range of topics, the absence of talking head shouting matches, and a Prairie Home Companion before Garrison Keillor retired, especially his “News from Lake Wobegon” monologues. Hungary on Tuesday blocked a massive EU aid package for Ukraine worth 18 billion euros ($18.9 billion), angering other members of the bloc. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said that Budapest is not against sending aid to Ukraine but objects to how the EU wants to do it. The United States and Australia announced on December 6 that they would invite Japanese troops to three-way rotations, pledging a show of unity against the growing Chinese military. Congress’s lame-duck session is an ideal time for both parties to pass last-minute legislation while voters are busy Christmas shopping and before members who lost their reelection bids surrender their seats in January. Especially this year, real danger lurks in such legislation. Above all, there’s the threat that Congress turns the expanded child tax credit into a new and very costly permanent entitlement. A state judge in Oregon this week issued a temporary restraining order (TRO) against the enforcement of new gun restrictions that were scheduled to take effect today. At issue is Measure 114, which Oregon voters narrowly approved last month. The initiative, which has provoked several lawsuits in state and federal court, requires permits to buy firearms and bans magazines that can hold more than 10 rounds. Turkey has set a deadline for the withdrawal of the US-backed Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) from areas of northern Syria near the Turkish border, a Turkish source told Al Jazeera. Both the US and Russia are trying to avert a Turkish invasion of northern Syria, and the source said Ankara has asked Washington and Moscow to press the SDF to withdraw. On Tuesday, Poland’s defense minister said that the country would accept a German offer to deploy a Patriot air defense missile system on Polish territory, changing course after Warsaw rejected the idea. Germany made the offer after a Ukrainian air defense missile landed in Polish territory, killing two people. After nearly nine months in Russian detention, Brittney Griner has been released as part of a prisoner swap, the Biden administration announced Thursday morning. The development comes after months of rumors of an attempted prisoner swap —and just weeks after Griner was formally transferred to a Russian penal colony to begin serving a 9-year sentence. On Tuesday of last week, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors voted to authorize police to use drones or robots to kill via remote control in the California city. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) told The Intercept on Monday that he could bring a Yemen War Powers Resolution to the floor of the Senate for a vote “hopefully next week.” The resolution would end US support for the brutal Saudi-led war and blockade on Yemen. At the time, Rice’s surname was Lei, and she was a 16-year-old student at Concordia School for Special Education (CSSE) in Macau. Rice, who has been deaf since age 5, was born in Fujian, China, but when she was 13 years old, her family moved to Macau to access the city’s more extensive educational resources for the deaf.
