A Brush, Colorado, man is facing 12 years in prison for possessing child pornography. Even more fraught is that no one, including the government, thinks he had child pornography. At least not in any traditional sense. Bradley Bass allegedly ran afoul of state law when he was found with explicit images of a local girl. But the 32-year-old high school principal came to have those photos in the course of a school sexting investigation carried out as a part of his job. The House Foreign Affairs Committee on Tuesday narrowly voted down a bill that would audit the tens of billions of dollars that Congress has approved to spend on the war in Ukraine. The purpose of bail is to get people out of jail. There continues to be broad misunderstanding of that basic principle among Californians generally, and blatant violation of it — knowing or otherwise — among police and judges. The right to bail under the state and federal constitutions routinely gets stood on its head, so that instead of being used to get people out of jail, bail is misused to keep people in. Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said Tuesday that Finland must declare an end to the arms embargo it imposed on Turkey in order for the Nordic nation to join NATO. Both Finland and Sweden placed export controls on Turkey in 2019 in response to a Turkish incursion into northeast Syria against Kurdish militants. In June of this year, the European Union (EU) placed a ban — beginning in 2035 — on the sale of new cars with combustion engines. But with winter and potential energy shortages coming, one EU nation, Switzerland, is working on a plan that could ban electric vehicles (EVs) from being used for nonessential journeys. A lawsuit filed this week on behalf of the state of Indiana alleges that the video-sharing social media app TikTok, and its China-based parent company ByteDance, engage in deceptive practices to addict children and teens to the platform. The opening line of the complaint alleges that "TikTok Inc. is a Chinese Trojan Horse unleashed on unsuspecting American consumers who have been misled by the company's false representations about the content on its platform." Hungary on Tuesday blocked a massive EU aid package for Ukraine worth 18 billion euros ($18.9 billion), angering other members of the bloc. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said that Budapest is not against sending aid to Ukraine but objects to how the EU wants to do it.
