Why would any law-abiding American balk at permitting the feds to vacuum up his biometric data at the airport? The Transportation Security Administration is running a pilot program in which travelers stand in photo kiosks that compare their faces with a federal database of photos from passport applications, drivers licenses, and other sources. TSA promises its new airport regime, which could vastly expand next year, will respect Americans privacy. If you believe that, I can sell you a bridge in Brooklyn really cheap. Click for Full Text!

Guantánamo’s First 7,627 Days Post Date: 2022-12-09 16:35:02 by Charles_Byrd

As of December 8, 2022, Guantánamo Bay detention facility a prison offshore of American justice and built for those detained in this countrys never-ending Global War on Terror has been open for nearly 21 years (or, to be precise, 7,627 days). Thirteen years ago, I published a book, The Least Worst Place: Guantanamos First 100 Days. It told the story of the military officers and staff who received the prisons initial detainees at that U.S. naval base on the island of Cuba early in 2002. Like the hundreds of prisoners that followed, they would largely be held without charges or trial for years on end. Ever since then, time and again, Ive ...
Review: Buckminster Fuller Helped Inspire Our Future Post Date: 2022-12-09 16:32:52 by Charles_Byrd

For decades, Buckminster Fuller maintained a reputation as a visionary innovator transforming our approach to everything from auto design to architecture to geometry. He was profiled in Time as early as 1932, and was its cover star in 1964 even before blossoming as a counterculture hero in the late 1960s, with help from fellow multidisciplinary visionary Stewart Brand and his Whole Earth Catalog. Fuller became a generation-gap-bridging icon of technology as a means to goals both pragmatic and transcendent. Fuller always had doubters as well as acolytes; rarely did his design or building ideas work out as he hoped, either as objects or as revolutions in cars or housing (or ...
Indonesia Criminalizes LGBTQ+ Relationships and Extramarital Sex With New Law Post Date: 2022-12-09 16:30:05 by Charles_Byrd

People who engage in physical LGBTQ+ relationships as well as sex outside of marriage in Indonesia may soon be imprisoned, according to the Parliaments amendment to the countrys colonial-era criminal code on Dec. 6. Other amendments include prohibiting criticism of the president and state institutions. The most updated version of the code, known as KUHP, is slated to take effect within three years, as implementing guidelines are drafted. Click for Full Text!
BOOK REVIEW: ‘America’s Rifle: The Case for the AR-15’ Post Date: 2022-12-09 16:27:58 by Charles_Byrd

President Biden told reporters over Thanksgiving that he would use the upcoming lame-duck session of Congress to do something he has wanted to do for decades. He wants to ban what he routinely calls assault weapons, a term that includes virtually all other semi-automatic rifles, shotguns and handguns. Reasonable heads may try to walk back some of his distortions, but Mr. Bidens misguided statements were all-encompassing: The idea that we still allow semi-automatic weapons to be purchased is sick. Its just sick. It has no, no socially redeeming value. Zero. None. Not a single solitary rationale for it except profits for the gun manufacturers. Click for ...
Digital Currency: The Fed Moves toward Monetary Totalitarianism Post Date: 2022-12-09 16:25:51 by Charles_Byrd

The Federal Reserve is sowing the seeds for its central bank digital currency (CBDC). It may seem that the purpose of a CBDC is to facilitate transactions and enhance economic activity, but CBDCs are mainly about more government control over individuals. If a CBDC were implemented, the central bank would have access to all transactions in addition to being capable of freezing accounts. It may seem dystopiansomething that only totalitarian governments would dobut there have been recent cases of asset freezing in Canada and Brazil. Moreover, a CBDC would give the government the power to determine how much a person can spend, establish expiration dates for deposits, and even ...

This Principal Investigated a Sexting Incident. So the Police Charged Him With Possessing Child Porn. Post Date: 2022-12-09 16:20:15 by Charles_Byrd

A Brush, Colorado, man is facing 12 years in prison for possessing child pornography. Even more fraught is that no one, including the government, thinks he had child pornography. At least not in any traditional sense. Bradley Bass allegedly ran afoul of state law when he was found with explicit images of a local girl. But the 32-year-old high school principal came to have those photos in the course of a school sexting investigation carried out as a part of his job. The girl says she isn't a victim of Bass' and both she and her parents have pled with law enforcement to stop the prosecution. Click for Full Text!

Blowing Up the World When So Little Is at Stake Post Date: 2022-12-09 16:15:37 by Charles_Byrd

In last weeks column, I discussed Christophers Coynes excellent book In Search of Monsters to Destroy, a cogent account of Americas endeavor to build a liberal informal empire. Coyne shows the inherent contradiction of using brutal means to achieve humane values. This week, Id like to discuss an even more deplorable part of American foreign policy, one which threatens the world with destruction. During the Cold War, the United States risked nuclear war with the Soviet Union; and though the Cold War ended long ago, American support for Ukraine in its war with Russia again risks atomic war. The dangers inherent in American policy have been discussed by ...

I admit it: I was fooled by Zelensky and Ukraine Exclusive: Joseph Farah repents of his comparing freedom-squelching leader to biblical heroes By Joseph Farah December 8, 2022 I was fooled about Volodymyr Zelensky. Yes, even I. When I'm wrong, I like to admit it. And I was horribly wrong. How wrong was I and about the entire war in Ukraine? Last March, I called Zelensky a courageous "Hebrew warrior." How's that? Worse yet, I jumped to conclusions about his war. I apologize. I even compared him to biblical heroes from the book of Judges. Sheesh! Was I ever wrong about him. I was too quick to believe the media something I rarely do. My whole career ...

The House Foreign Affairs Committee on Tuesday narrowly voted down a bill that would audit the tens of billions of dollars that Congress has approved to spend on the war in Ukraine. The bill was rejected by the Democrat-led panel in a vote of 26 to 22. The legislation was introduced by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) and a small group of Republicans who oppose US aid to Ukraine, but it received strong support from more hawkish Republicans. Click for Full Text!

Iranian Kurds were risking their lives to protest the government's Islamic dress code. Protests that had begun over the death of a Kurdish woman in "morality police" custody turned into a nationwide uprising against the theocracy. Teenagers confronted the police while women burned their mandatory headscarves in the street. Just across the border, some Iraqi Kurds held solidarity rallies. Iraqi Kurdish influencer Dana Nawzar Jaf, who wants to "make Kurdistan great again" (and whose Twitter account is now suspended) had other ideas. Click for Full Text!
Editorial: California still violates the Constitution on bail Post Date: 2022-12-08 21:34:42 by Charles_Byrd

The purpose of bail is to get people out of jail. There continues to be broad misunderstanding of that basic principle among Californians generally, and blatant violation of it knowing or otherwise among police and judges. The right to bail under the state and federal constitutions routinely gets stood on its head, so that instead of being used to get people out of jail, bail is misused to keep people in. Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said Tuesday that Finland must declare an end to the arms embargo it imposed on Turkey in order for the Nordic nation to join NATO. Both Finland and Sweden placed export controls on Turkey in 2019 in response to a Turkish incursion into northeast Syria against Kurdish militants. As part of the deal Turkey signed with the two countries, they agreed to lift the arms embargo. Click for Full Text!
Swiss Plan Exposes Folly of Relying on Electric Vehicles Post Date: 2022-12-08 21:30:10 by Charles_Byrd

In June of this year, the European Union (EU) placed a ban beginning in 2035 on the sale of new cars with combustion engines. But with winter and potential energy shortages coming, one EU nation, Switzerland, is working on a plan that could ban electric vehicles (EVs) from being used for nonessential journeys. That plan exposes the lie that EVs can be a reliable replacement for gas and diesel-powered transportation. Switzerland is bracing for an energy crisis this winter due to its reliance on imports to sustain the country through the colder months, reported The Telegraph. Click for Full Text!
Indiana Lawsuit Accuses TikTok of Fraud, Calls the App a 'Chinese Trojan Horse' Post Date: 2022-12-08 21:26:23 by Charles_Byrd

A lawsuit filed this week on behalf of the state of Indiana alleges that the video-sharing social media app TikTok, and its China-based parent company ByteDance, engage in deceptive practices to addict children and teens to the platform. The opening line of the complaint alleges that "TikTok Inc. is a Chinese Trojan Horse unleashed on unsuspecting American consumers who have been misled by the company's false representations about the content on its platform." But despite the seriousness of the accusations, there is little evidence to back up the state's claims. Click for Full Text!
It’s Time to Remove “Public” From Public Broadcasting Post Date: 2022-12-08 21:22:57 by Charles_Byrd

Im a consumer of public broadcasting. Im currently subscribing to Passport, PBSs streaming app, so I can catch up on all the Ken Burns documentaries. And I used to enjoy NPR news and other programming: the longform, in depth reporting on a range of topics, the absence of talking head shouting matches, and a Prairie Home Companion before Garrison Keillor retired, especially his News from Lake Wobegon monologues. Admittedly, my taste is probably conditioned by my Swedish upbringing with subdued news reporting and other programming limited to two public TV and three public radio channels (it has long since changed to a more American model with cable and, more ...

Hungary on Tuesday blocked a massive EU aid package for Ukraine worth 18 billion euros ($18.9 billion), angering other members of the bloc. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said that Budapest is not against sending aid to Ukraine but objects to how the EU wants to do it. The 18 billion euro plan would require all 27 EU members to jointly borrow the funds, something Hungary has previously said its against. Click for Full Text!

December Is No Time to Ignore Congress Post Date: 2022-12-08 21:09:27 by Charles_Byrd

Congresss lame-duck session is an ideal time for both parties to pass last-minute legislation while voters are busy Christmas shopping and before members who lost their reelection bids surrender their seats in January. Especially this year, real danger lurks in such legislation. Above all, theres the threat that Congress turns the expanded child tax credit into a new and very costly permanent entitlement. But other threats loom. Ill look at a few of them today. A lame-duck session is a great opportunity to push for too much spending on irresponsible pet projects, and more will probably be pushed through this year with little accountability. Thats partly because ...
