Russia’s Foreign Ministry warned on Monday that Washington’s policies have brought the US and Russia to the brink of a “direct clash.” Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Maria Zakharova made the comments in response to a statement from State Department spokesman Ned Price, who said last week that Russia was to “blame” for the deterioration of US-Russia relations. Five Must-Know Facts About the Disastrous New Omnibus
Post Date: 2022-12-22 15:46:14 by Charles_Byrd

Just as I predicted back in October, Congress pushed its discretionary spending deadline back by one week, from December 16 to December 23. This comes as no surprise as congressional leadership is once again trying to ram through a massive omnibus bill before the year ends. The Friday deadline gives leadership leverage, as they threaten a partial government shutdown that might keep members of Congress in Washington over Christmas. Vote as you’re told, or you’re not going home is the name of this game. Yet in the same vein that Congress managed to punt on appropriations when they were due on September 30, and again on December 16, Congress could punt on appropriations once more. ...

Private Security: An Effective Method to Prevent Being a Crime Victim
Post Date: 2022-12-22 15:44:01 by Charles_Byrd

In the face of rampant crime, many individuals and businesses turn to private security as an alternative to government protection. One example is the Karco gas station in Philadelphia, which has hired heavily armed guards from Pennsylvania S.I.T.E. Agents to patrol its premises. The guards are equipped with Kevlar vests and either AR-15s or shotguns, and the owner claims that since hiring the guards, the gas station has been free of loitering and other criminal activity. The failure of state police and the justice system to effectively protect citizens is what has led many people to turn to private security and the use of firearms for self-defense. In some states, restrictive gun control ...

State demands diversity quotas on corporate boards, now court rules
Post Date: 2022-12-21 21:50:19 by Charles_Byrd

The California Court of Appeals upheld two injunctions against state-mandated diversity quotas on corporate boards earlier this month, according to court documents. California has passed several laws which require corporations to hire at least one director to fulfill a quota based on categories such as sex, race or sexual orientation. The appellate court rejected the California secretary of State’s emergency request to lift two injunctions issued by trial courts which claimed that the laws are unconstitutional. State climate curriculum says 'emotions' should outweigh 'rational thinking'

The Washington state Department of Health’s climate curriculum instructs teachers to focus on “emotions” over “rational thinking,” according to curriculum lesson plans. The Washington state Department of Health released a five part curriculum to help students learn the “intersections of biological, societal, and environmental issues.” The second phase of the curriculum, “Climate Change & Pregnancy,” tells educators and students to “pay attention” to their emotions as “for too long” science has caused “rational thinking” to be prioritized. Wis. Supreme Court Justice Candidate Daniel Kelly: An Outspoken Constitutionalist

“A mere demarcation on parchment of the constitutional limits of the several departments is not a sufficient guard against those encroachments which lead to a tyrannical concentration of all the powers of government in the same hands.” -James Madison, The Federalist, No. 48 There are two points in Madison’s statement above: 1) The words alone of the Constitution have no efficacy in and of themselves — to be effective, they must be enforced; and 2) maintaining the constitutional limits of the different branches of government — the separation of powers — is crucial to avoiding tyranny. Congress Yet Again Fails To Pass Crack Cocaine Sentencing Reforms
Post Date: 2022-12-21 20:53:23 by Charles_Byrd

A once-promising bipartisan bill to erase the sentencing disparity between crack and powder cocaine failed to make it into a year-end omnibus spending bill winding through Congress, likely dooming efforts to pass crack cocaine sentencing reform for yet another legislative session. Criminal justice advocates have been working for decades to roll back draconian crack cocaine laws passed by Congress in the 1980s. Those laws set the penalties for crack cocaine offenses at 100 times greater than equivalent powder cocaine offenses, which resulted in monstrously long and racially disparate sentences. In 2010 Congress passed a law reducing the sentencing ratio to 18–1, and advocates hoped to ...

When I talk to fellow economists about fossil fuels and climate change, they sound pretty reasonable. They know that high per-capita GDP is awesome. They know that high per-capita GDP requires a lot of energy. They know that we get almost all of our energy from fossil fuels. They know that solar and wind are currently a grossly inadequate substitute for fossil fuels. But they’re still deeply worried about carbon-fueled climate change, especially extreme tail risk. What, then, is to be done? Click for Full Text!

Dems want $575 million for 'family planning' where population growth 'threatens biodiversity'

The omnibus spending bill currently under consideration in Congress includes a minimum of $575 million towards “family planning” and “reproductive health,” including in areas where population growth “threatens biodiversity,” according to the text of the bill. The $1.7 trillion, more than 4,000-page-long spending bill unveiled Tuesday represents the federal government’s budget for the coming fiscal year. Conservatives have criticized the spending bill for pouring enormous sums of money into left-leaning projects through earmarks, the process in which a member of Congress agrees to sign a spending bill on the condition that it includes funding for one of ...

Biden opens probe into school district that dared to yank 130 LGBT books

The Biden administration announced Tuesday it is investigating a Texas school district that removed LGBT-themed books from its library shelves. In January, Granbury ISD removed 130 books from its library shelves, including books with LGBTQ themes including “This Book Is Gay” and “Being Jazz: My Life as a (Transgender) Teen,” according to the Texas Tribune. Following the removal of the books, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) filed a complaint to the Department of Education’s (DOE) Office of Civil Rights regarding a secret recording of Superintendent Jeremy Glenn ordering district librarians to remove books with LGBT themes and characters. North Korea’s state media KCNA reported on December 19 that the hermit state has conducted an “important, final-phase” test for the construction of a spy satellite, which it hopes to complete by April 2023. The communist state made this declaration after the South Korean and Japanese militaries reported the North’s launch of two intermediate-range ballistic missiles toward its east coast. The climate police have found another thing to blame on climate change. On Sunday, at least 36 people were injured when a Hawaiian Airlines flight suffered what the pilot referred to as “severe turbulence” during a flight from Phoenix to Honolulu. At least one mainstream media outlet — the Columbia Broadcasting System (CBS) — was quick to echo a claim that more such pockets of turbulence could be expected in the future due to climate change. Congress Misses Another Chance To Correct Blatantly Unjust Crack Penalties
Post Date: 2022-12-21 19:32:10 by Charles_Byrd

As a senator in 1986, President Joe Biden wrote the bill that established an irrational sentencing disparity between the smoked and snorted forms of cocaine, which he later called "a big mistake" that "trapped an entire generation." This week Congress squandered yet another opportunity to correct Biden's big mistake, which mandated especially severe punishment for crack offenders based on an arbitrary distinction with no scientific basis. The omnibus spending bill that was released early Tuesday morning did not include legislation addressing crack cocaine penalties. Republicans who had been open to that proposal reportedly balked after Attorney General Merrick ...

Historical Christianity as a Liberating Force in China

Attempts by the Chinese government to arrest the spread of Christianity have faltered since Christians are remaining steadfast in their faith. Over one hundred million Chinese are estimated to be Christians, and projections suggest that by 2030, China could have as many as 247 million Christians. However, instead of affirming the rise of Christianity, the Chinese government has ramped up efforts to clamp down on Christian missions. In China, the Church is treated like another arm of the state that must be monitored to ensure conformity with the doctrines of the Communist Party. The “Administrative measures for religious groups” which was instituted in 2020 compels religious ...

It’s not an El Paso problem, it’s a lot bigger than El Paso, I honestly believe it’s bigger than the United States. We need to work with the UN, work with other countries to be able to come up with a program that is humanitarian for everyone.” ...

A New FBI Building Would Cost Billions. Do We Even Need One?

Early Tuesday morning, the Senate finally released its omnibus spending bill, which would fund the government through September of next year. The deadline to pass the bill actually passed on Friday, requiring a one-week stopgap bill to avoid a government shutdown. Part of the delay stemmed from disagreements over where to build a new location for the FBI's headquarters. But at a time of record debt and continuing trillion-dollar deficits, it's worth asking whether the bureau even needs a new building. Click for Full Text!
