Will the Fed Blink in 2023? Will Congress Throw More Fuel on the Fire?
Post Date: 2023-01-02 21:55:31 by Charles_Byrd

In the final week of 2022, we Americans can foresee two significant economic risks in 2023. The first one is a probability that the Federal Reserve will get weak-kneed and stop raising interest rates before inflation is truly under control. The second risk is that Congress will continue to spend and borrow money irresponsibly. The likely mix of these two hazards would all but ensure that our economic misery lasts much longer than necessary. Let's start with the first risk. In theory, to tame inflation, the Fed will need to push real interest rates not only high — as it has already done — but higher than the highest rate that the Fed is now targeting, and in fact much higher ...

An Imperative New Year's Resolution for Christians

In 1865 the American poet, William Ross Wallace, wrote a poem in praise of motherhood. The refrain of the poem was the sentence, “For the hand that rocks the cradle is the hand that rules the world.” In the first half of the twentieth century, “He who controls the teachers’ college controls the future,” was an adage bandied about in graduate school classrooms in universities and in boardrooms on Wall Street. I believe it was Jonathan Kozol, the ex-officio grandfather in the U.S. of home- schooling education, who insisted that government control of the content and methodology of education in public schools was a way of channeling students into a future that primarily ...

China Persists in Detaining Dissidents in Psychiatric Facilities
Post Date: 2023-01-02 21:52:44 by Charles_Byrd

Based on an August 2022 report titled Drugged and Detained: China’s psychiatric prisons by human rights group Safeguard Defenders, government agents and police in China persist in detaining government critics in psychiatric facilities, notwithstanding “reforms.” Domestically termed as ankang in Mandarin, after the system of police- operated psychiatric prisons introduced in the 1980s, most victims are detained in regular psychiatric wards nowadays. What this implies is that doctors and hospitals team up with the communist authorities to expose victims to medically-unnecessary involuntary hospitalizations as well as forced medication. For instance, doctors unlawfully do not ...

Overcoming Challenges to Economic Freedom in States

People point to tax burdens and over-regulation as the reasons for economic decline. But the reality is that high government spending is the precursor to heavy taxes and regulation. Look no further than the Fraser Institute’s latest report to see how states rank for economic freedom based on government spending, taxes, and labor market regulation. Click for Full Text!

Where Do The Savings Go?

Innovation and exchange can be frustratingly uninspiring, particularly given that there are concentrated, vivid costs (in the form of lost jobs and struggling communities) and benefits dispersed across millions of people who might not even notice. Is it worth shutting a textile mill in the United States and opening a “sweatshop” in southeast Asia, so Americans can save a few cents on socks? Opponents of exchange and innovation tend not to put much weight on the dispersed benefits. Some people think it’s especially virtuous to pay extra for clothes that aren’t produced in “sweatshops” or to support local businesses. But as Henry Hazlitt reminds us, the art of ...

Poland responds to Ukraine’s Nazi-collaborator celebration

There can be "no nuances" when it comes to the glorification of WWII Nazi collaborator Stepan Bandera in Ukraine, Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki told a press conference on Monday. Warsaw would not show any leniency to those who "do not want" to recognize "terrible crimes" committed by Ukrainian nationalists against Poles during WWII, he added. "We are extremely critical, very, very negative towards any glorification or even reminders of Bandera," Morawiecki said, commenting on a Twitter post by the Ukrainian parliament, the Verkhovnaya Rada, celebrating what would have been the 114th birthday of the head of the Organization of Ukrainian ...

Amid Food Shortage, North Koreans Mandated to Donate ‘Patriotic Rice’

Notwithstanding wide-ranging food shortages in North Korea, the government is forcing its people to donate several kilograms of “patriotic rice” for use by the military, party officials, scientists, and needy people, Radio Free Asia (RFA) reported. People who have not donated their designated quantity by the end of 2022 could be publicly lambasted and sent to political reeducation. Worse still, they could be sent to labor camps, RFA said. Donald Trump Turns on His Own Supporters Over Abortion

Donald Trump has blamed the Republican Party's disappointing midterm performances on the "abortion issue" rather than the failure of his endorsed candidates. In a post on Truth Social, the former president said that it "wasn't my fault" that the GOP failed to ride the expected "red wave" in November's elections, while pointing the finger for the poor election results at those in the party who pushed for severe abortion restrictions post Roe v. Wade. Click for Full Text!

The Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) is prepared to work with Arab states to assist initiatives for world security, according to Tan Kefei, a spokesperson for the Chinese Defense Ministry, reported Al-Mayadeen on 29 December. The aim of the collaboration, the spokesman said, is to “implement the consensus reached at the China-Arab States Summit, jointly promote global security initiatives, continue to deepen practical exchanges and cooperation,” as well as “make new contributions to maintaining world peace and development.” Click for Full Text!

China has named its ambassador to the United States, Qin Gang, as the new foreign minister, as the communist state displays indications of reverting back to a more subdued diplomatic strategy after a rising tide of opposition against its combative style. The move was revealed last Friday evening by China National Radio, which said the decision was made at a gathering of the National People’s Congress Standing Committee. Click for Full Text!

Accusations of Chinese tyranny are often based on demands from Beijing that Google and Facebook comply with their censorship orders as a condition for remaining in China. Reports over the years suggested that these firms typically comply: Google was building a censored search engine suited to Chinese demands; The New York Times has claimed Facebook developed a censorship app as its entrance requirement to the Chinese market, and Vox accused Apple of succumbing to Chinese censorship demands by banning an app from its store that had been used by protesters in Hong Kong demanding liberation from control by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). But now the tables appeared to be turning when it ...

Money-Supply Growth Turns Negative for First Time in 33 Years
Post Date: 2023-01-02 21:25:14 by Charles_Byrd

Money supply growth fell again in November, and this time it turned negative for the first time in 33 years. November's drop continues a steep downward trend from the unprecedented highs experienced during much of the past two years. During the thirteen months between April 2020 and April 2021, money supply growth in the United States often climbed above 35 percent year over year, well above even the "high" levels experienced from 2009 to 2013. Since then, the money supply growth has slowed quickly, and we're now seeing the first time the money supply has actually contracted since the 1980s. The last time the year-over-year change in the money supply slipped into negative ...

Unknown is whether former Republican Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) will get the needed 218 votes among the 222 House Republicans. What's at stake? Also today, will admitted liar George Santos end up being the most truthful Member of the House? Finally - most Americans want the FBI investigated. Will a Republican House be up to the task? Elon Musk continues to release incriminating files from Twitter that shows criminal activity. Censoring citizens regarding Covid, Ukraine, and Covid 19 bioweapons, all at the behest of the government. Covering up sensitive political information regarding Hunter Biden’s laptop, and certainly, anything to do with fraudulent elections. Recently, Elon Musk called out gain of function research, promoted by Anthony Fauci, as a bioweapon. Musk is correct. Gain of function research is bioweapon development. Dr. Francis Boyle, an international and criminal law expert, has been pointing out for quite some time that Fauci and others are criminally implicated in the development of an offensive ...

Before Covid-19, Singapore did not have a single facility manufacturing finished vaccines. Nonetheless, over the past two years, five pharmaceutical companies have decided to establish plants projected to produce over a billion doses yearly in the city-state of around six million inhabitants. The vaccines range from traditional types like live-attenuated and recombinant vaccines to those with mRNA technology, with the first slated to be unveiled as early as 2023. Click for Full Text!

With 2022 mostly behind us, many are undoubtedly grateful that this year is ending. From lingering COVID restrictions to the war in Ukraine to economic decline, it’s been a rough go. Amidst all this, the steady slew of spending coming out of Washington certainly hasn’t helped. While people were struggling to put food on the table and pay for much-needed healthcare, politicians were spending billions of dollars on the most wasteful projects you’ve ever heard of. Its a new calendar year, so sing unto the Lord a new song. Bored with that? Consider these thoughts from Chesterton: “All the towering materialism which dominates the modern mind rests ultimately upon one assumption; a false assumption. Australia Considers Giving MPs Say in War Matters Amid Worsening Regional Security

Amid deteriorating regional security, Australia is dealing with the tough question of whether future decisions to go to war should be within the purview of the prime minister or Parliament. The ruling Labor Party started an inquiry into how Australia makes the decision to dispatch troops to war after pressure by some party members who think such power should not rest totally — as it does now — with the prime minister and Cabinet. As Joe Biden pushes for one of his administration's major goals – much more transgenderism among America's youth – other nations around the globe are pulling back on their plans to provide those chemicals and body- mutilating surgeries. According to a new report from CBN, Biden's Health and Human Services chief, Xavier Becerra, affirmed Biden wants to use taxpayer dollars to provide those body modifications to both minors and adults when their doctors claim the procedures are "medically necessary." Pro-life law takes effect, abortions drop to near zero

The Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services has reported that enacting a law to protect preborn children led to an almost complete end to abortions, with zero reported in one month, and just two in the following month. According to Kentucky Today, no abortions were committed in the month of September in the state. Two were committed in October, both of which were surgical procedures. One was an aspiration abortion, committed on a preborn child at nine weeks gestation; the second was a dilation and evacuation (sometimes referred to as a “dismemberment abortion”), committed at 16 weeks. War planners 'ecstatic': Biden 'opens door' for China to sabotage U.S.

Action by Joe Biden actually "opens the door" for China to sabotage America, by spying and possibly disrupting America's military communications, charges China expert Gordon Chang. He writes at the Gatestone Institute, where he is a senior distinguished fellow and an advisory board member, about the Biden administration process that just cleared a Chinese company to own 370 acres of land only 12 miles from Grand Forks Air Force Base in North Dakota. Joseph Aloysius Ratzinger RIP

In his entrance into and departure from this transitory world Joseph Ratzinger/Benedict XVI displayed exquisite sensitivity to liturgical time. Born and baptized on Easter Eve of 1927, he died within the octave of Christmas 2022 on the day of his predecessor Sylvester, in the womb of a perishing twelvemonth from which a new year of plenteous grace is set to spring. Only by divine gift may a Christian’s earthly existence be bracketed in this way between the saving mysteries of Christmas and Easter. On the death from great old age of a theologian who in his writings has so fruitfully accompanied my own spiritual pilgrimage, I have nothing to add to two online publications written and ...
