US Patriot Missiles in Ukraine: A Desperate & Dangerous Escalation
Post Date: 2023-01-03 16:16:34 by Charles_Byrd

US appears to be in the process of transferring its Patriot air defense missile system to Ukraine. CNN in its article, “Exclusive: US finalizing plans to send Patriot missile defense system to Ukraine,” claims the US will approve and then quickly ship the system or systems into Ukraine in just days after the decision is made. Paradoxically, CNN admits that training the large numbers of Ukrainians necessary to operate the system will take months. This has left analysts speculating that in fact NATO personnel already familiar with the system will operate it merely posing as “Ukrainians.” Click for Full Text! Click for Full Text!

2022 Euthanasia Prevention Coalition Year in Review. Victories, Defeats, and Changes.

2022 was a year of both victories, defeats, and changes. The most important victory was the Massachusetts Judicial Supreme Court deciding that there is no right to assisted suicide in the Massachusetts state Constitution. Possibly the saddest defeat was in Oregon which agreed to remove its assisted suicide residency requirement, essentially extending assisted suicide nationally in the US. In fact that, after passing Bill C- 7 in March 2021, Canadians with disabilities are being killed by (MAiD) euthanasia because of poverty, homelessness, and an inability to obtain necessary medical care. The stories related to euthanasia for disabled Canadians, veterans with PTSD and people who are unable ...

Lack of Good Analyses Contributes to the Decline of the 'West'

What really hit me last year was the dearth of correct analyses in main stream media and in politics with regards to the war in Ukraine. Little if anything is based on facts. More than 90% of the published output is propaganda. Click for Full Text!

Vaxxing Deaths or Covid Deaths?
Post Date: 2023-01-03 16:08:56 by Charles_Byrd

Until the last couple of years, I doubt whether I’d ever spent even ten minutes thinking about vaccination issues, and probably a large majority of ordinary Americans fell into the same category. I’d had a few rounds of shots as a young child, supplemented by boosters every ten or fifteen years and an annual flu shot. I had no idea whether any of them worked, but except for having a sore arm for a day or so, none of them had produced any ill effects for me, nor for anyone I knew. Everything changed in 2020, as the sudden Covid epidemic led our government to heavily promote a massive vaccination drive based upon a new mRNA technology. This quickly caused the once-obscure ...

The vastly misunderstood ‘Morgentaler’ case: Three takeaways every pro-lifer in Canada should know

The 1988 Morgentaler decision from the Supreme Court of Canada is often referenced by those on both sides of the abortion debate. It is an important point in the history of abortion in Canada, but it is also one of the most misunderstood aspects of the abortion debate. It deserves understanding. Click for Full Text!

Media Rewrites Ukraine’s Dark History

Tonight, I'd like to speak to you about the war in Ukraine, but before doing so, I have a request to make of you. Try as hard as you can to set aside your views of whether the U.S. should or should not be intervening in that war by lavishing Ukraine with $100 billion and counting, and all sorts of sophisticated weaponry, as it treats the border conflict between two other countries on the other side of the world as its own proxy war. And even try to leave aside your views about whether you believe Russia invaded Ukraine without any provocation or justification, or whether you believe that the U.S. and the EU – deliberately or otherwise – provoked the Russians by continuing to ...

I don't listen to the radio very much. But if I'm driving alone, I will sometimes turn it on. I'll usually listen to a classic rock station, or maybe talk radio - but this time I landed on the classical station and was listening. The soft baritone voice of the announcer came on to wish me a happy first day of Kwanzaa, and told me that the theme of the day was Unity. They promised music by a black female composer later on. Hong Kong Teachers Instructed to Snoop on Students and Co-workers in Free Speech Clampdown by China

Teachers in Hong Kong will be mandated to report “potential violations” of the city’s laws to the authorities, in a further suppression of freedom of speech in the city’s schools, as well as passing an examination on their knowledge of a stringent national security law, Radio Free Asia (RFA) reported. “Starting from the 2023/24 school year, all newly-appointed teachers in [publicly funded] schools are required to pass the Basic Law and National Security Law Test in order to be considered for appointment,” the Education Bureau said in a recent circular to schools. CA APPEALS COURT DENIES STAY OF INJUNCTION IN GUN PRIVACY CASE

A California appeals court panel has unanimously denied a request from state Attorney General Rob Bonta for an immediate stay of an injunction in a case brought by the Second Amendment Foundation in a challenge of the state law allowing the state Department of Justice to share personal information about firearms owners with private researchers. Bonta claimed the law, AB 173, “does not create a serious invasion of privacy.” The trial court disagreed, granting a preliminary injunction to the plaintiffs, thus placing a hold on enforcement of the information sharing law. The case is known as Barba, et.al. v. Bonta. Click for Full Text!

The Philippines and China will set up direct communication between their foreign ministries to prevent “miscalculation and miscommunication” in the fiercely contested South China Sea, Manila said on December 29 last year. The deal will be inked during Philippine President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos’ visit to Beijing in January 2023 when he will convene with Chinese leader Xi Jinping, a foreign ministry official revealed. Popularity or seniority? Palo Alto debates best way to choose mayor
Post Date: 2023-01-02 22:02:16 by Charles_Byrd

Every January, the Palo Alto City Council conducts what amounts to a popularity contest among its members to select its new mayor and vice mayor. The process typically follows an established pattern, with the vice mayor nearly always ascending to the mayor's chair. Selection of the vice mayor, however, is often subject to intrigue, backdoor negotiations, political expediency and the occasional power tussle, injecting an element of tension and surprise into what is otherwise a tightly scripted and ceremonial first meeting of the year. For all of us who scribble for publication, at however low a level, all activities other than writing take on at most a secondary importance. Even meals, necessary as they no doubt are, can come to seem unwanted interruptions of the real business of life, which is writing. We are apt to forget that reading in general, and of our work in particular, is not of the same importance to 99.99 percent of the population, including that part of it that has great power over our lives, as it is to us. It is a humbling thought (humbling, that is, for scribblers) that in many small towns it is easier to find an electronic cigarette or have oneself tattooed than to buy a book. And now comes another blow ...

China’s ByteDance Admits It Spied on U.S. Journalists

Employees of Chinese technology behemoth ByteDance inappropriately retrieved data from social media platform TikTok to monitor American journalists in an attempt to trace the source of leaks to the media, the company acknowledged in December 2022. Such an admission can be contrasted with TikTok’s widespread efforts to persuade customers and governments of key markets such as the United States that they safeguard users’ data privacy and that the social media platform does not undermine the national security of these markets. Will the Fed Blink in 2023? Will Congress Throw More Fuel on the Fire?
Post Date: 2023-01-02 21:55:31 by Charles_Byrd

In the final week of 2022, we Americans can foresee two significant economic risks in 2023. The first one is a probability that the Federal Reserve will get weak-kneed and stop raising interest rates before inflation is truly under control. The second risk is that Congress will continue to spend and borrow money irresponsibly. The likely mix of these two hazards would all but ensure that our economic misery lasts much longer than necessary. Let's start with the first risk. In theory, to tame inflation, the Fed will need to push real interest rates not only high — as it has already done — but higher than the highest rate that the Fed is now targeting, and in fact much higher ...

In 1865 the American poet, William Ross Wallace, wrote a poem in praise of motherhood. The refrain of the poem was the sentence, “For the hand that rocks the cradle is the hand that rules the world.” In the first half of the twentieth century, “He who controls the teachers’ college controls the future,” was an adage bandied about in graduate school classrooms in universities and in boardrooms on Wall Street. I believe it was Jonathan Kozol, the ex-officio grandfather in the U.S. of home- schooling education, who insisted that government control of the content and methodology of education in public schools was a way of channeling students into a future that primarily ...

China Persists in Detaining Dissidents in Psychiatric Facilities

Based on an August 2022 report titled Drugged and Detained: China’s psychiatric prisons by human rights group Safeguard Defenders, government agents and police in China persist in detaining government critics in psychiatric facilities, notwithstanding “reforms.” Domestically termed as ankang in Mandarin, after the system of police- operated psychiatric prisons introduced in the 1980s, most victims are detained in regular psychiatric wards nowadays. What this implies is that doctors and hospitals team up with the communist authorities to expose victims to medically-unnecessary involuntary hospitalizations as well as forced medication. For instance, doctors unlawfully do not ...

Overcoming Challenges to Economic Freedom in States

People point to tax burdens and over-regulation as the reasons for economic decline. But the reality is that high government spending is the precursor to heavy taxes and regulation. Look no further than the Fraser Institute’s latest report to see how states rank for economic freedom based on government spending, taxes, and labor market regulation. Click for Full Text!

Where Do The Savings Go?
Post Date: 2023-01-02 21:50:11 by Charles_Byrd

Innovation and exchange can be frustratingly uninspiring, particularly given that there are concentrated, vivid costs (in the form of lost jobs and struggling communities) and benefits dispersed across millions of people who might not even notice. Is it worth shutting a textile mill in the United States and opening a “sweatshop” in southeast Asia, so Americans can save a few cents on socks? Opponents of exchange and innovation tend not to put much weight on the dispersed benefits. Some people think it’s especially virtuous to pay extra for clothes that aren’t produced in “sweatshops” or to support local businesses. But as Henry Hazlitt reminds us, the art of ...

Poland responds to Ukraine’s Nazi-collaborator celebration

There can be "no nuances" when it comes to the glorification of WWII Nazi collaborator Stepan Bandera in Ukraine, Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki told a press conference on Monday. Warsaw would not show any leniency to those who "do not want" to recognize "terrible crimes" committed by Ukrainian nationalists against Poles during WWII, he added. "We are extremely critical, very, very negative towards any glorification or even reminders of Bandera," Morawiecki said, commenting on a Twitter post by the Ukrainian parliament, the Verkhovnaya Rada, celebrating what would have been the 114th birthday of the head of the Organization of Ukrainian ...

Amid Food Shortage, North Koreans Mandated to Donate ‘Patriotic Rice’

Notwithstanding wide-ranging food shortages in North Korea, the government is forcing its people to donate several kilograms of “patriotic rice” for use by the military, party officials, scientists, and needy people, Radio Free Asia (RFA) reported. People who have not donated their designated quantity by the end of 2022 could be publicly lambasted and sent to political reeducation. Worse still, they could be sent to labor camps, RFA said. Donald Trump Turns on His Own Supporters Over Abortion

Donald Trump has blamed the Republican Party's disappointing midterm performances on the "abortion issue" rather than the failure of his endorsed candidates. In a post on Truth Social, the former president said that it "wasn't my fault" that the GOP failed to ride the expected "red wave" in November's elections, while pointing the finger for the poor election results at those in the party who pushed for severe abortion restrictions post Roe v. Wade. Click for Full Text!

The Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) is prepared to work with Arab states to assist initiatives for world security, according to Tan Kefei, a spokesperson for the Chinese Defense Ministry, reported Al-Mayadeen on 29 December. The aim of the collaboration, the spokesman said, is to “implement the consensus reached at the China-Arab States Summit, jointly promote global security initiatives, continue to deepen practical exchanges and cooperation,” as well as “make new contributions to maintaining world peace and development.” Click for Full Text!
