Technology and Transhumanism Post Date: 2023-01-07 06:06:55 by Charles_Byrd

Technology wins wars. The technologically advanced civilization generally wins out over the less advanced civilization. The almost cliché example of this is the Spanish Conquistadors rapid conquest of central American civilization. The Conquistadors were greeting like gods as they emerged from the sea. Disease played a tremendous part too, but it was gun powder and steel that won day. The bronze age weaponry and technology gave way to iron age civilizations as iron swords sliced through bronze swords. Alexanders phalanx steam rolled less organize armies. The military technology and engineering of the Roman legions marched through the Mediterranean world. The advanced ...

It seems Michael Anton wants to define American conservatism. He accuses the other side of playing this game, but there are not many conservatives who have spilled as much ink on the topic as Anton in the last couple of years. I had it out with him in 2021. Now, he has directed his fire at others who are questioning the underpinnings of the West Coast Straussian view of the American founding. Click for Full Text!

Fighter jet production grinds to halt after crash Post Date: 2023-01-06 01:26:47 by Charles_Byrd

The engine supplier for Lockheed Martins highly-sought F-35 fighter jet has suspended deliveries while an investigation into a December accident proceeds, Defense News reported Wednesday, stalling hundreds of planned jet deliveries. The Pentagons F-35 Joint Program Office (JPO), the Defense Contract Management Agency and engine maker Pratt & Whitney came to a mutual agreement to block new engine deliveries on Dec. 27, the JPO told Defense News. The JPO grounded a small group of newer jets after an F-35B variety crashed on a Texas runway earlier that month and is conducting an investigation into the cause of the accident. Economic Reality Is Far Too Complex to Be Improved By Trade Restrictions Post Date: 2023-01-06 01:24:56 by Charles_Byrd

My recent column on the need to theorize carefully about comparative advantage provoked several people to share with me, by email, their objections to my case for a policy of unilateral free trade. Some of these objections miss their mark because they reflect a failure to distinguish real-world facts that are relevant to the point being made from facts that are irrelevant. To increase the clarity of one of my arguments about trade I used automobiles as a hypothetical example. I explained that, because the word automobiles refers to many different kinds of vehicles, producers in one country can have a comparative advantage at producing one kind of automobile (say, small sedans) ...

China Lambastes U.S. for Twisting Facts After Aircraft Clash Post Date: 2023-01-06 01:21:38 by Charles_Byrd

On Dec. 21, a U.S. military plane embroiled in a showdown with Chinese aircraft in the disputed South China Sea breached international law and undermined the safety of Chinese pilots, Chinas Defense Ministry spokesman claimed. However, the U.S. military asserted that a Chinese Navy J-11 fighter jet came within 10 feet of a U.S. Air Force RC-135 aircraft, prompting it to take circumventing measures to prevent a collision, and a U.S. military spokesman said that the Chinese jet came within 20 feet from the nose of the plane. Colorado Governor Sending Illegal Aliens to Other Destination Cities Post Date: 2023-01-06 01:20:05 by Charles_Byrd

For months nonprofit organizations have been assisting illegal aliens as they cross the border with Mexico, giving them temporary food and shelter and in some cases buying them one-way bus tickets to cities such as Denver in an attempt to avoid a humanitarian crisis. Last month, Denvers Democratic Mayor Michael Hancock issued an emergency declaration so that the city could free up resources to support the ongoing influx of these bused illegal immigrants. This influx of migrants, the unanticipated nature of their arrival, and our current space and staffing challenges have put an immense strain on city resources, to the level where theyre on the verge of reaching a breaking ...

Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has signed a bill expanding government control over the nation's news media. The law gives the National Council of Television and Radio Broadcasting authority to regulate online and print media, including the power to temporarily block online media outlets without a court order. It also gives the agency the power to ask social media platforms and search engines to remove content that violates the law. The National Union of Journalists of Ukraine warned that the bill would erode important freedoms that "distinguish the social system of Ukraine from the regime of dictatorial Russia." Liberty for Julian Assange Post Date: 2023-01-06 01:07:06 by Charles_Byrd

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assanges vindication seems maybe, perhaps, imaginablyachievable. Its enough for me to publish my singular New Year resolution not a wish, but a firm resolution to more actively contribute to growing pressure to free Julian Assange, the mistreated, vilified and imprisoned, brave and brilliant founder of WikiLeaks. Its a finite issue, unlike negotiations to end a raging war or a global agreement on climate controls. Yet freeing Assange had appeared almost insurmountable not long ago. Whereas, given the painstaking pursuit to free Assange by a pitifully small coterie of determined supporters, some success may be at hand. ...

UK Suffers ‘Deadliest’ Week in Two Years, NHS Falls Into Crisis Post Date: 2023-01-06 01:02:35 by Charles_Byrd

The United Kingdoms cradle-to-grave free National Healthcare System (NHS) is in deep crisis, with not enough doctors and nurses, long waits for ambulances, patients sprawled on the floors at the ER, and emergency consultation appointments being booked a year out. And it is estimated that hundreds of people are dying each week because of delays in urgent care. The president of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine, Dr. Adrian Boyle, shared that once figures showing the wait times for December are released, they will likely be the worst he has ever seen, as more than a dozen NHS trusts and ambulance services declared critical incidents during the holidays. Akeem Terrell had been behaving peculiarly at a party on New Year's Day in 2021, and did not cooperate with Phoenix, Arizona, police trying to arrest him after they ordered him to leave. He died in custody later that day. Now surviving family members of Terrell's are suing Maricopa County Sheriff Paul Penzone, the county itself, the city of Phoenix, and various officers involved in causing Terrell's death. The suit was filed last week in federal court in Arizona, suing over various alleged constitutional rights violations, and seeking compensatory and punitive damages and court costs. As the House of Representatives Wednesday erupted in the kind of chaotic energy one normally associates with far-flung parliaments during Question Time, there was a familiar face sitting with a wry smile next to his old friend Rep. Thomas Massie (RKy.): The former five-term congressman from Grand Rapids, Michigan, Justin Amash. Amash, who was elected each time as a Republican but then during his last term disaffiliated from the GOP and eventually became the first sitting Libertarian in congressional history, was not there just to watch it all burn downhe is offering himself up as perhaps the unlikeliest candidate for speaker of the House in an already unlikely 118th session of ...
The GOP Split on Ukraine Aid Isn't Really About Ukraine Post Date: 2023-01-06 00:22:46 by Charles_Byrd

When the new GOP House majority finally selects a speaker and gets down to business, it will have another coalition-rendering issue to address: whether to continue, scrutinize, reduce, or end U.S. aid to Ukraine. The debate promises to be messyand not only because the majority is so narrow. The Republican Party is split on foreign policy, but this is playing out less as a normal foreign policy dispute than an odd intrusion of domestic politics into foreign affairs. For most aid critics, the urge to cut off Kyiv appears unconnected to any sort of principled realism, non-interventionism, or even isolationism. It looks much more like an offshoot of the culture war and the GOP's ...

However, further investigation suggests that the latest data hack could be the same as the one seen in December 2022, where a hacker calling himself Ryushi leaked the data of 400 million accounts on the dark Web. The latest instance of 200 million accounts are the remnants of the previous hack, after the elimination of duplicate data. Click for Full Text!

During the course of an FBI written response to a Freedom of Information Act request asking about the trade names and suppliers of surveillance software the FBI had purchased, and in a legal brief submitted to a federal judge, the government has yet again quietly acknowledged its antipathy to constitutional provisions that all of its employees have sworn to uphold. Since we are dealing with software used to spy on Americans in the U.S. and abroad, the constitutional right being transgressed is the right to privacy. Click for Full Text!

The Biden administration just gave the okay for the U.S. Postal Service to ignore state abortion bans and send abortion drugs through the mail in all 50 states. The Hill reports the U.S. Department of Justice issued the legal opinion to the U.S. Postal Service and independent mail services Tuesday in response to several recent Biden administration decisions that allow abortion drugs to be sold through the mail or at a pharmacy. Previously, the abortion drug mifepristone could only be dispensed by abortion facilities, medical offices and hospitals under the supervision of a licensed medical professional. Click for Full Text!

Members of Congress raked in profits from defense contractor stocks after voting to send billions in military aid to Ukraine, according to financial disclosures and voting records reviewed by the Daily Caller News Foundation. Congress approved more than $20 billion worth of military aid to Ukraine between Jan. 24, a month before Russia invaded, and Nov. 20, including $12.7 billion in direct drawdowns from existing U.S. weapons stocks, according to data compiled by the Council on Foreign Relations. To make up for that aid, top defense companies have boosted production, and lawmakers trading on company stocks saw a financial windfall as a result, according to publicly available stock trading ...
