Tantalizing though it may sound, Rep. Buddy Carter’s (R-Ga.) bill to replace the IRS and the nation’s present convoluted and complex income-tax system with a simple flat-consumption tax has no chance of seeing the light of day in the new Congress. It was one concession that now-Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy was more than happy to give to those blocking his campaign. Over 300 Cuban and Haitian migrants recently landed at Dry Tortugas National Park, a remote protected archipelago located over 60 miles from Key West, Florida. National Park Service personnel at the site were overwhelmed during New Year's weekend and closed the park. Another 606 migrants were stopped at sea from reaching the national park by federal law enforcement officials and were repatriated by the U.S. Coast Guard. The Homeland Security Task Force-Southeast stated on January 4 that all the migrants were removed from the park and sent to a facility in Key West for further processing. Back in 1995, Bryan Range pleaded guilty to fraudulently obtaining $2,458 in food stamps by misrepresenting his income. He returned the money, paid a $100 fine and $288 in court costs, and served three years of probation. Although Range did not realize it, that Pennsylvania misdemeanor conviction also came with a lifelong penalty: He lost his constitutional right to keep and bear arms. His case, which the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 3rd Circuit will hear next month, poses the question of whether that policy, which prohibits gun ownership by millions of Americans with no history of violence, violates the Second Amendment. Both of President Joe Biden’s Delaware homes appear to have the very appliance his administration is contemplating banning — gas stoves. Richard Trumka Jr., a top Consumer Product Safety Commission official who was nominated by Biden, told Bloomberg on Monday that banning the manufacture and import of gas stoves is “on the table” if they “can’t be made safe.” However, Biden’s home in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware features an upscale kitchen “any gourmet chef would die for” that appears to have a gas-powered stove, according to a Long & Foster Real Estate listing.
