Researchers using the James Webb Space Telescope discovered an exoplanet, a planet that orbits a star, which is roughly the same size as the Earth but a few hundred degrees warmer, NASA said Wednesday. It was the first time an exoplanet was discovered by using the Webb Telescope since it first became fully operational in July, NASA said. Click for Full Text!

South Korea and the United States will conduct tabletop exercises in February 2023 in a bid to tackle the North’s nuclear threats, South Korea’s defense minister said on Wednesday. Since 2017, U.S. and South Korean officials have cautioned that the North could be preparing for its first test of a nuclear device. Nuclear-armed North Korea fired a record number of missiles last year, including intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) that can target the U.S. mainland. Click for Full Text!

DOA: Fair Tax Act to Abolish the IRS Has Zero Chance of Passage

Tantalizing though it may sound, Rep. Buddy Carter’s (R-Ga.) bill to replace the IRS and the nation’s present convoluted and complex income-tax system with a simple flat-consumption tax has no chance of seeing the light of day in the new Congress. It was one concession that now-Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy was more than happy to give to those blocking his campaign. Efforts in past decades to pass a similar bill have been ignored, with no committee even looking at it and never passing it on for a floor vote. Click for Full Text!

Over 300 Cuban and Haitian migrants recently landed at Dry Tortugas National Park, a remote protected archipelago located over 60 miles from Key West, Florida. National Park Service personnel at the site were overwhelmed during New Year's weekend and closed the park. Another 606 migrants were stopped at sea from reaching the national park by federal law enforcement officials and were repatriated by the U.S. Coast Guard. The Homeland Security Task Force-Southeast stated on January 4 that all the migrants were removed from the park and sent to a facility in Key West for further processing. Dry Tortugas National Park reopened on Sunday to the public. Click for Full Text!

The Ivy League think tank where lawyers found classified materials linked to the Obama White House is a patronage mill for the Biden administration, raising suspicions among critics that its establishment attracted tens of millions in donations from anonymous Chinese donors. The Department of Justice is probing how “a small number” of classified documents from President Biden’s years as vice president ended up at the Washington, DC, think tank that bears his name, the White House confirmed Monday. A second batch of papers was found at an additional location, it was reported Wednesday. Click for Full Text!

The 3rd Circuit Considers Whether Nonviolent Crimes Justify the Loss of Second Amendment Rights

Back in 1995, Bryan Range pleaded guilty to fraudulently obtaining $2,458 in food stamps by misrepresenting his income. He returned the money, paid a $100 fine and $288 in court costs, and served three years of probation. Although Range did not realize it, that Pennsylvania misdemeanor conviction also came with a lifelong penalty: He lost his constitutional right to keep and bear arms. His case, which the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 3rd Circuit will hear next month, poses the question of whether that policy, which prohibits gun ownership by millions of Americans with no history of violence, violates the Second Amendment. Some people live together by choice. Others share space out of necessity. Lack of affordable housing forces many families to adjust, but the zoning police remain rigid in Cobb County, Georgia. Even during a nationwide housing crisis, code enforcers northwest of Atlanta continue to enforce a narrow vision of suburbia. One rule limits overnight parking based on property size. Families can have one car for every 390 square feet of living space, which effectively prevents more than two vehicle owners from living together in a 1,000-square-foot unit. Click for Full Text!

Both of President Joe Biden’s Delaware homes appear to have the very appliance his administration is contemplating banning — gas stoves. Richard Trumka Jr., a top Consumer Product Safety Commission official who was nominated by Biden, told Bloomberg on Monday that banning the manufacture and import of gas stoves is “on the table” if they “can’t be made safe.” However, Biden’s home in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware features an upscale kitchen “any gourmet chef would die for” that appears to have a gas-powered stove, according to a Long & Foster Real Estate listing. The Bidens purchased the home for $2.74 million in 2017. Click for Full Text!

Residents of Paris, Maine, recalled two school-board members on Tuesday who pushed a gender identity policy that would hide student gender transitions from parents, according to WGME News. In a 333-243 vote, community members voted out Oxford Hills School Board Director Sarah Otterson and School Board Member Julia Lester after they supported the implementation of a gender policy that would keep a students’ transgender status a secret from their parents and allow students to use bathrooms and locker rooms on the basis of gender identity, according to WGME News. The vote comes after roughly 700 residents signed a petition against the board members in November, forcing a recall vote of ...

Looking beyond the “aw, neat, what a great person” façade of effective altruism, one clearly finds a level of narcissistic cynicism and a drive to the permanent power that financial immortality affords that is only matched by the amount of funds being dispersed. The gifts offered by today’s billionaires—the Silicon Valley crowd, et al. —sound great (-ish—very -ish), but to discount the obvious underlying reason is to fail to grasp the insidious nature of their beneficence. More than 72,000 restaurants were destroyed by misguided pandemic lockdowns. Thousands of these were in New York State, and many of those in the Big Apple, where restaurateurs must also contend with high rents and business-damaging “woke complaints.” Yet now they face another threat: a proposed ban on gas stoves that would reportedly cut their productivity 40 percent. Along with the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s (CPSC’s) consideration of a nationwide gas-stove prohibition, New York governor Kathy Hochul is proposing to make her state our country’s first to ban natural gas heating and appliances in all new buildings. House Republicans Want a Vote On the FairTax. Is It Worth Supporting?

When Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R–Calif.) finally secured the votes necessary to become the next House speaker, it required concessions to dissenters within his party. Members of the House Freedom Caucus demanded, among other things, a vote on the Fair Tax Act, which has been introduced in the current session. The Fair Tax Act, while likely doomed by a Democratic Senate and White House, represents the first serious challenge to the American tax code in recent memory. Versions of the act have been proposed since at least 1999. While it has never been voted on in the House, it has been endorsed by multiple Republican presidential candidates and Libertarian presidential candidate Gary Johnson. ...

OSU enforces policies which “deter, suppress, and punish speech about political and social issues of the day,” according to the lawsuit filed in the United States District Court for the Western District of Oklahoma. Pennsylvania state lawmakers are in the process of repealing a law that bans teachers from wearing religious emblems in the classroom. The current bill aims to repeal Section 1112 of the Public School Code of 1949 stating that no teacher is allowed to wear a “dress, mark, emblem or insignia” that would indicate a specific religion when teaching students, and any teacher who is found to have violated the law is subjected to suspension for an entire year. State senators in the Senate Education Committee (SEC) voted Tuesday to move the “Protecting the First Amendment Right to Freedom of Religious Expression” bill forward to the state Senate to be voted on in the General ...
