Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy sought Western support for his country in surprise visits to Britain and France on Wednesday, pushing for fighter jets to battle Russian invaders in a dramatic speech to the U.K. Parliament, and then flying to Paris to meet the French and German leaders over dinner at the Elysee Palace. The embattled leader's European tour and pleas for more advanced weapons came as Ukraine braces for an expected Russian offensive and hatches its own plans to retake land held by Moscow's forces. Western support has been key to Kyiv's surprisingly stiff defense, and the two sides are engaged in grinding battles. Click for Full Text!

The Cops Who Killed Tyre Nichols Could Be Convicted of Murder and Still Get Qualified Immunity Post Date: 2023-02-09 00:43:54 by Charles_Byrd

At his State of the Union address last night, President Joe Biden introduced the family of Tyre Nichols, who was killed in early January by Memphis Police Department (MPD) officers during a traffic stop. The footage, released several weeks later, was brutal and condemned almost universally, reigniting a stagnant debate about how to give victims of state violence some justice after their rights are violated by the government. "When police officers or departments violate the public's trust," said Biden, "we must hold them accountable." Click for Full Text!

The lead-up to the release of body-camera footage showing Memphis police officers beating Tyre Nichols included public calls for calm out of fear that citizens might riot after seeing the violent footage. While there were some protests and isolated incidents, the rioting did not happen. But in Alabama, those fears have been used to stop the public release of police body-camera footage entirely. President Joe Biden is blaming the discovery of classified documents from his time as vice president and senator on former staffers who packed up his old offices. "One of the things that happened is that what was not done well is, as they packed up my offices to move them, they didn't do the kind of job that should have been done to go thoroughly through every single piece of literature that's there," Biden said Wednesday in an interview with Judy Woodruff on "PBS NewsHour" in DeForest, Wisconsin, where Biden traveled to talk about the economy. Exploiting Bad Policing for Tyrannical Ends Post Date: 2023-02-08 23:36:19 by Charles_Byrd

What do China, North Korea, Russia, and Cuba have in common? Not only are they totalitarian states with all power concentrated in the hands of a few, but they are countries that have only state-controlled policing forces. This is not coincidence; tyrannical governments require a monopoly on force. In the U.S., where police and sheriffs departments are accountable to the local citizens they serve, the enemies of freedom have been trying for many decades to destroy the credibility of local police for the ultimate purpose of nationalizing them. In this episode, Paul discusses with Art Thompson and Matt Harper how the tragic death of Tyre Nichols after being beaten by police officers is ...

Biden's Proposed Assault Weapon Ban Is Unconstitutional, Unlikely, and Ineffectual Post Date: 2023-02-08 22:48:25 by Charles_Byrd

In his State of the Union address last night, President Joe Biden repeated his desire for a new assault weapon ban. "In 10 years that ban was law, mass shootings went down," he insisted. "After we let it expire in a Republican administration, mass shootings tripled." He is referring to a long-sunsetted ban on certain varieties of semiautomatic rifles in effect from 1994 to 2004. As usual with talk of "assault weapons," the definitions of what weapons he's targeting are both vague and pointless. Biden himself has admitted that weapons of the same level of potential danger to others when misused by criminals will remain legal under any conceivable Democratic ...

New York City prosecutors had some 550 convictions in cases investigated by police officer Joseph Franco thrown out, most involving low-level drug offenses. Franco was charged with perjury and misconduct after investigators in the Manhattan District Attorney's Office found video they said showed several drug buys Franco claimed to witness did not happen, or he was not in a position to see them if they did. Now, a judge has dismissed the charges against Franco after finding prosecutors failed to turn over evidence to the defense as required on at least three occasions. The evidence includes surveillance videos, cellphones from people he arrested and recordings of interviews with a ...

A few years ago, I was scolded by an email correspondent for my alleged indifference to the fact that first responders and teachers are paid far less than are Hollywood stars and professional athletes. My correspondent insisted that [r]eal people know its wrong and dangerous that men playing games get paid so much more than men and women who save lives and educate our children. The danger that my correspondent perceived in this situation is that, in her words, This low pay will one day leave us with not enough teachers and paramedics. Click for Full Text!

The attorney for Hunter Biden on Wednesday sent letters to more than a dozen people requesting that they preserve a variety of documents that may be relevant to future litigation, possibly signaling that the president's embattled son is taking a more aggressive tack now with longtime critics. Abbe Lowell, who was hired by Biden's team recently, has distributed letters to at least 14 people, many of whom were involved in disseminating data they say came from a laptop that Biden dropped off at a repair shop in Wilmington, Delaware, in April 2019 and never retrieved. Biden's Foreign Policy Is Adrift Post Date: 2023-02-08 22:27:21 by Charles_Byrd

"While you reap the consequences of their failures, the Biden administration seems more interested in woke fantasies than the hard reality Americans face every day," Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders charged in the GOP rebuttal to President Joe Biden's State of the Union address Tuesday night. Obviously prewritten, it's a line that might have worked had Biden's speech not overwhelmingly focused on economic issues which directly affect that "hard reality." The major subject Biden actually neglected was, predictably, foreign policy. Though administration of U.S. foreign affairs is a central duty of the presidency, Biden devoted just a few moments of a ...
