Scholars and especially commentators in need of a quotation frequently cite Charles Louis de Secondat, Baron de La Brède et de Montesquieu to support the idea of a “mixed” constitution with democratic, aristocratic, and monarchical elements. Rarely, though, are Montesquieu’s works, especially The Spirit of Laws, explored at length. Montesquieu is more likely to be plumbed for quotes to diminish current politicians rather than to be read seeking wisdom. Some writers even call him a prophet. The U.S. Naval Academy has renamed a building that once honored Matthew Fontaine Maury, the founder of modern oceanography. It is now named for President Jimmy Carter, a failed president whose most significant achievement was ordering the failed rescue mission of American hostages in Iran. Mississippi Senate Passes Bill Prohibiting Risky “Transgender” Procedures on Kids

On Tuesday, the GOP-controlled Senate in the state of Mississippi passed House Bill 1125, which will ban “gender reassignment” surgery and hormone replacement therapy for minors. The bill has completed its legislative journey, with the Mississippi House of Representatives having already passed the bill in January. Governor Tate Reeves, a Republican, has already vowed to sign the bill when it hits his desk. On Tuesday, February 21, the abortion lobby released their ballot initiative’s language to enshrine abortion into Ohio’s constitution. The language would allow for abortion with no restrictions and possibly remove all pro-life protections for the preborn currently enacted, including parental consent. In the language they announced, it states that it would permit abortion to be prohibited after fetal viability; however, it then states that fetal viability can only be determined on a case-by-case basis, allowing for abortion through all nine months. A very long study of about 1,000 adults born in the ’50s and ’60s looked at how they were raised, and whether that upbringing had an impact on their longevity. In what must have been a disconcerting revelation to the editors of the liberal New York Times, “over 1000 contributors to the New York Times” have signed an open letter accusing the left-wing newspaper of following “the lead of far-right hate groups” in their coverage of transgender issues. They have been joined by “the countersignatures of 23,000 media workers, readers and subscribers to the newspaper.” The open letter was addressed to Philip B. Reason is going to court to try to pry free records about whether women who died in federal prison received adequate medical care. Reason Foundation, the nonprofit that publishes Reason, filed a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia against the Bureau of Prisons (BOP) today, seeking medical reviews of in-custody deaths in two federal women's prisons.
