The heroic whistleblower and peace activist Daniel Ellsberg is dying. In an open letter to his friends and supporters, Ellsberg announced that two weeks ago he learned that he has inoperable pancreatic cancer with a prognosis of three to six months. The letter is beautiful and inspiring, but it’s also as heart-rending as anything you’ll ever read, largely because within it Ellsberg makes it abundantly clear that he has extremely urgent concerns about the world he will soon be leaving behind. Do humans truly have rights? According to the United Nations, “Human rights include the right to life and liberty. Freedom from slavery and torture, freedom of opinion and expression, the right to work and education, and many more. Everyone is entitled to these rights, without discrimination.” However, how can we say all humans have rights if we don’t include the most precious of humans: the unborn? The philosophical and religious belief that the fetus is undeniably a person is the basis for my belief that abortion is wrong. Sam Bankman-Fried, infamous for his role in the collapse of FTX that caused huge losses for cryptocurrency investors, already faced numerous fraud and conspiracy charges for stealing from customers. Now federal prosecutors in New York have indicted Bankman-Fried for making unlawful political donations. The alleged scheme involved “siphon[ing] off FTX’s customer funds and deploy[ing] them for political causes” using shell donors. Climatology is complicated, and I do not claim to be an expert in this topic. It is generally accepted that CO2 levels are, in part, driving global warming. While I would agree that this is the case, my intuition tells me that the effect of CO2 levels in the range at which they exist in our atmosphere presently has very little to do with climate. I cannot discount a possible contributing effect of CO2, but I believe that the current perception that rising carbon dioxide levels are the central factor that is driving the destruction of our biosphere is unfounded and illogical. A judge has ordered the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) to return 13 birds it seized from falconer Holly Lamar. The agency seized the birds and confiscated some of her equipment, days after she filed a complaint against one of its agents for failing to respond to her requests for information for months and giving her conflicting information when the agent did respond.
