The BBC was forced to scrap much of its weekend sports programming as the network scrambled to stem an escalating crisis over its suspension of soccer host Gary Lineker for comments criticizing the British government's new asylum policy. As a growing number of English Premier League players and BBC presenters rallied to Lineker’s support and refused to appear on the airwaves on Saturday, Britain’s national broadcaster faced allegations of political bias and suppressing free speech, as well as praise from some Conservative politicians. Last week, the Biden administration asked Congress to permit its agents to continue to spy on Americans without search warrants. The actual request was to re-authorize Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act of 1978. FISA requires warrants from the FISA Court for all domestic spying. Section 702 is a 2008 amendment to FISA. It expressly authorizes warrantless spying of foreign persons. Click for Full Text!

Based on mounting evidence that minors are especially susceptible to false confessions, criminal justice reformers in several states are demanding tighter rules for juvenile interrogations. The latest such push is happening in New York, where reformers hope to pass legislation requiring that minors have access to legal counsel prior to police interviews. Maryland and Washington state already enforce such a rule. And in 2021, Illinois and Oregon became the first two states to ban police from lying to minors during interrogations. Click for Full Text!

NetChoice, a trade association that represents tech firms, has sued to block California's Age-Appropriate Design Code Act (A.B. 2273), the state's hamfisted attempt to protect children online. As NetChoice writes in a request for a preliminary injunction filed last month, the law violates the Constitution by "enact[ing] a system of prior restraint over protected speech using undefined, vague terms, and creat[ing] a regime of proxy censorship, forcing online services to restrict speech in ways the State could never do directly." Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascon suspended a deputy district attorney without pay for five days last month because prosecutor Shea Sanna was guilty of "misgendering" a sex offender. North Korea reportedly fired a short-range ballistic missile into the Yellow Sea on Thursday, possibly sending a message to the U.S. and South Korea ahead of their planned military exercises set to begin next week. The South Korea Joint Chiefs of Staff said it detected the launch from the North's western port city of Nampo at 6:20 p.m. local time, The Korean Times reported. This fall, just as Keith Kaplan was finishing up his first term as a town councilman in the New York suburb of Teaneck, New Jersey, he proposed a Reasonable Childhood Independence bill. It states that when parents allow kids to perform age-old independent activities, like walking or playing outside, they are not committing negligence unless the the kids are in obvious, serious, and likely danger. Two Clearwater, Florida, paramedics, who weren't named by media, have been suspended after pronouncing a man dead when he wasn't actually dead. Phebe Maxwell called for help when her father went into cardiac arrest. When the paramedics arrived, they took his pulse and pronounced him dead even as Phebe pointed out he was still breathing. A UN official for Syria has condemned an Israeli airstrike on Syria’s Aleppo International Airport, which put the airport out of service and halted aid flights into the city that had been arriving for earthquake relief. A Hungarian parliamentary delegation visited Sweden on Tuesday and expressed support for the country’s NATO bid but also told Swedish officials to stop telling “lies” about Hungary.
