On this day in 1787, nearly two weeks after its planned opening, the Constitutional Convention of 1787 began. With the arrival of the delegations representing South Carolina and New Jersey, the number of states necessary for a quorum had been met. One of the first official proposals taken up by the delegates was Robert Morris nomination of George Washington to be president of the convention. Morris motion was seconded by John Rutledge of South Carolina, expressing his confidence that the choice would be unanimous, and observing that the presence of General Washington forbade any observation on the occasion which might otherwise be proper. WSJ Worries Debt Limit Fight Could Jeopardize Military Contractors’ Profits Post Date: 2023-05-25 23:21:27 by Charles_Byrd

The Wall Street Journal is very concerned about the effects of the debt limit fight
on military contractors. In an article (5/12/23) headlined Debt-Ceiling Fight Weighs on Defense Industry, the paper reported, If the US defaults on its debt and is unable to pay all its bills this summer, the pain will fall squarely on the defense industry. A default could disrupt payments to military contractors, the Journal pointed out, and even a temporary suspension of the debt ceiling for several months would raise the likelihood the Defense Department will have to make do with a temporary budget known as a continuing resolution. This would likely inflate ...

The recent controversy over CPHs new essays on the Large Catechism has caused some to ask whether it is appropriate for women to publicly teach official doctrine to the church. Some may argue directly from divine revelation to answer this question. Others might argue, from a sort of natural-law perspective informed by Scripture, that there is an ontological difference between men and women which makes it appropriate for men, but not women, to write the kind of essays newly attached to the catechism. Mark Preus recent article has jump-started the conversation on the first kind of argument; I would like to do the same thing for the second kind. A recent Twitter thread by Jordan ...

Just when one is tempted to conclude that Ukraines sycophantic backers in the West cant embrace policies that are more detached from reality, leading figures in that faction manage to plumb new depths of absurdity. The latest example is a May 22 Wall Street Journal op-ed by Bernard- Henri Lévy. He fumes that one of Vladimir Putins chief weapons in his war against Ukraine is Russias status as a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, which entails the power to block any resolution. Its a legacy of World War II and the decision to reserve this status to the five victors, including the Soviet Union. But the Soviet Union ...

If its true that only the good die young, what does that say about Henry Kissinger, who turns 100 this Saturday? At the peak of his power in the early 1970s, public opinion surveys showed Kissinger to be the most admired man in America. He remains an icon, the ultimate foreign-policy wise man. Yet his name is forever stained by his support for violent campaigns in Asia, Africa, and Latin America that laid waste to nations and left hundreds of thousands of dead. U.S. military leaders in World War II had consensus on the atomic bomb Post Date: 2023-05-24 21:48:07 by Charles_Byrd

Historians might debate whether the atomic bombing of Japan was necessary to secure its surrender, but U.S. military leaders in World War II did not. Their consensus was no, if Emperor Hirohito was permitted a titular role in a post-surrender Japanese government. President Harry S. Truman accepted that idea, but only after atomic bombs had been dropped. Adm. William D. Leahy elaborated: The use of this barbarous weapon at Hiroshima and Nagasaki was of no material assistance in our war against Japan. The Japanese were already defeated and ready to surrender.
My own feeling was that in being the first to use it, we had adopted an ethical standard common to the barbarians of the ...

In the video above, WhatsHerFace Entertainment dives into the unspoken reality of transgender sexual reassignment surgery and all of the pain, regret and horrors it entails. Most clear-headed adults would realize that surgically and chemically altering your anatomy from male to female, or female to male, is a complex and painful process. The problem that underpins most other problems in modern times is that human minds are highly hackable, and that the science of hacking them at mass scale has been advancing since Bernays over a century ago. This is what keeps people consenting to the destructive and exploitative agendas of the powerful against their own interests. The fact that our minds are being manipulated at mass scale throughout our civilization is the most significant thing happening in the world by far, but hardly anyone talks about it, because hardly anyone knows its happening. And a lot of power rides on keeping it that way. Click for Full Text!

The Fed Is Losing the Inflation Fight Post Date: 2023-05-23 21:52:57 by Charles_Byrd

We saw a big selloff in the gold market last week and the price dropped below $2,000 an ounce. The catalyst for that selloff was tough talk from several Federal Reserve officials and an increasing expectation that the central bank will raise rates again in June. As Peter Schiff explained in his podcast, everybody thinks the Fed is going to win the inflation fight because it is going to be even tougher. In reality, they are talking tougher because they are losing the fight. On Thursday, Dallas Fed President Lorie Logan said shes concerned that much too high inflation is not cooling fast enough to allow the Fed to pause its interest-rate hike campaign in June. India: Another Demonetization? Post Date: 2023-05-23 21:51:07 by Charles_Byrd

In late 2016, the Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, came on TV at 8 pm to announce that most currency bills would no longer be legal tender after midnight. An individual was allowed to convert only about $30 per visit to the bank. This led to massive crowds (not lineups, because Indians dont follow the lineup system) at the banks, suffering, chaos, and deaths there were no exceptions for the sick, older people, and pregnant women. Eventually, more than 100% of the demonetized cash returned to the banks, although I know no one who didnt forget to convert some of his misplaced currency bills. What happened? Demonetization ended up laundering massive amounts of ...

Republican Governor Greg Gianforte has signed a bill defining the word sex in state law as only male or female joining Kansas and Tennessee, which have similar laws that LGBTQ+ advocates argue will deny legal recognition to nonbinary and transgender people. Medical professionals say the laws also ignore that some people are born as intersex a term that encompasses about 60 conditions in which a person is born with genitalia, reproductive organs, chromosomes and/or hormone levels that dont fit typical definitions of male or female. A new Department of Energy (DOE) rule requiring mobile homes to be made more energy-efficient in order to reduce carbon emissions not only will have no effect on carbon emissions, but also will drive up the cost of such housing, making it unaffordable for many low-income households. The DOEs rule all 97 pages of it requires mobile, or manufactured, homes to meet strict energy-conservation standards by improving insulation and sealing. The rule is set to take effect next Wednesday, barely more than a year after it was finalized. Click for Full Text!
