Watchdog Group: House, Senate C-Street Members Paid Below-Market Rents Post Date: 2010-04-01 19:17:02 by Brian S

A government watchdog group says it has filed ethics complaints against lawmakers who have rented rooms in a controversial Capitol Hill townhouse. The Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington - CREW for short - cites news reports that say House members and some senators have paid below-market rents to live in a house on C Street SE that is owned by a Christian prayer group known as the Fellowship. CREW wants the House and Senate ethics committees to determine whether the monthly rent, reported to be around $950, is below the market value. If so, CREW says, the discount could amount to an illegal gift. Click for Full Text! Click for Full Text!

The anger all but boiled off the page, and one marveled at the frustration, desperation, and primal rage so barely contained. He remembered a frantic Autherine Lucy, as she was pelted with eggs and slurs as she dared become the first black student at the University of Alabama. The echoes of jeers hurled at the Little Rock Nine haunt his fevered memory and come alive as his poisoned pen seeks revenge. He recalls much more recently the sullen, dim-witted fury of Klansmen listening to David Duke shriek about white power in Metaire, Louisiana, as he ran for the governors office (and captured 55% of the white vote) in 1991. Colbert I. King, Washington Post columnist, looks ...

First, before you watch this short but remarkable video, a little background on Democratic Rep. Hank Johnson. He's from Georgia's Fourth District. A Washington, D.C. native, he's the fellow who took office in 2007 after knocking off former five-term Democratic Rep. Cynthia McKinney. A former county judge, the 55-year-old is an attorney, a standard liberal Democrat, receiving 100 ratings from the ADA and ACLU. In this House Armed Services Committee hearing last Friday (no, it wasn't April Fool's Day), Johnson was questioning Admiral Robert Willard, head of the U.S. Pacific fleet, about the stationing of 5,000 additional U.S. Marines and their families on the western ...

I defend my fellow patriots who are white by stating, These patriots do not give a hoot about Obamas skin color. They simply love their country and oppose his radical agenda. Obamas race is not an issue. Recently, I have come to believe that perhaps I am wrong about Obamas race not being ...

A YEAR AGO this week, my daughter Rachel Corrie was killed in Rafah in the Gaza Strip. She was run over by an Israeli bulldozer manned by two soldiers. The Israeli government exonerated the soldiers, closed the case, and refuses to release to the US government the complete report on the military police investigation into Rachel's killing. Only the "conclusions" of the report have been released. In them, the soldiers are identified by their initials: Sergeant Y.F. and Sergeant E.V. Their initials are nearly all we know of them. I wonder about Y.F. and E.V. I wonder whether they will pause this week and remember. Rachel was an unarmed peace activist trying to prevent the ...

High flyer: RNC Chairman Steele suggested buying private jet with GOP funds According to two knowledgeable sources, Republican National Committee chairman Michael Steele once raised the possibility of using party money to buy a private jet for his travel. I know that
regular ongoing use of planes was something that was looked at, says one person with direct knowledge. I cant speak to how serious those inquiries were. Both sources say Steele considered purchasing a plane outright, or buying fractional ownership in one, through a company such as NetJets. Steeles spokesman, Doug Heye, did not deny that such discussions took place, responding that ...

Dingell/Barry plan revealed in 'to control the people' statement By Glen Enloe, Kansas City Star Midwest Voices columnist 2010 As if President Barack (Barry) Obama didnt have enough woes with mounting health care opposition, Rep. John Dingell (D-MI) said in an interview March 22 that
it takes a long time to do the necessary administrative steps that have to be taken to put the legislation together to control the people. Wow. Another Democrat lets yet another party secret out of the bag. Of course, if youve been paying attention lately, this is no real surprise. Its always been about control. 20 Way ObamaCare will Take Away Our Freedoms By David Hogberg Sun., March 21, '10 3:24 PM ET Tags: Health Care - ObamaCare - Freedom With House Democrats poised to pass the Senate health care bill with some reconciliation changes later today, it is worthwhile to take a comprehensive look at the freedoms we will lose. Of course, the overhaul is supposed to provide us with security. But it will result in skyrocketing insurance costs and physicians leaving the field in droves, making it harder to afford and find medical care. We may be about to live Benjamin Franklins adage, People willing to trade their freedom for temporary security deserve neither and will lose ...

Marco Rubio's lavish rise to the top Marco Rubio was barely solvent as a young lawmaker climbing his way to the top post in the Florida House, but special interest donations and political perks allowed him to spend big money with little scrutiny. About $600,000 in contributions was stowed in two inconspicuous political committees controlled by Rubio, now the Republican front-runner for the U.S. Senate, and his wife. A St. Petersburg Times/Miami Herald analysis of the expenses found: Rubio failed to disclose $34,000 in expenses including $7,000 he paid himself for one of the committees in 2003 and 2004, as required by state law. One committee paid ...

Mr. Ensign, Republican of Nevada, suggested that a Las Vegas development firm hire the husband, Douglas Hampton, after it had sought the senators help on several energy projects in 2008, according to e-mail messages and interviews with company executives. The messages are the first written records from Mr. Ensign documenting his efforts to find clients for Mr. Hampton, a top aide and ...

A Detention Bill You Ought to Read More Carefully Mar 5 2010, 3:40 PM ET Why is the national security community treating the "Enemy Belligerent, Interrogation, Detention, and Prosecution Act of 2010," introduced by Sens. John McCain and Joseph Lieberman on Thursday as a standard proposal, as a simple response to the administration's choices in the aftermath of the Christmas Day bombing attempt? A close reading of the bill suggests it would allow the U.S. military to detain U.S. citizens without trial indefinitely in the U.S. based on suspected activity. Read the bill here, and then read the summarized points after the jump. According to the summary, the bill sets out a ...

Defaulted Loans May Haunt Seniors: Social Security Checks May Get Smaller by Ellen E. Schultz A littlenoticed law could soon result in smaller Social Security checks for hundreds of thousands of the elderly and disabled who owe the U.S. money from defaulted loans and other debts more than a decade old. Social Security benefits are offlimits to creditors, such as creditcard companies and banks. But the U.S. can collect debts to federal agencies by "offsetting," or withholding Social Security and disability payments. The Treasury currently withholds benefits of 3.1 million Social Security recipients to recover defaulted student, farm and small ...

The predominantly Queer San Diego Democratic Club revealed itself dramatically split in the Democratic primary race for the 79th Assembly District. City Council president Ben Hueso is running a classic insider campaign, relying on major endorsements and fundraising clout. His principal challenger, Sweetwater Union High School District board member Pearl Quiñones, is seeking the office in a progressive grass-roots campaign in the tradition of Assemblymember Lori Saldaña (who endorses her) and City Councilmember Donna Frye. The club was unable to reach the 60 percent threshold needed for an endorsement, and ultimately voted to rate both candidates ...

Blames Democrats for Katrina aftermath Republican strategist Karl Rove says in a new memoir that the failure to find weapons of mass destruction in Iraq badly damaged the Bush administration's credibility and led to dwindling public support for the war. The former White House political adviser blames himself for not pushing back against claims that President George W. Bush had taken the country to war under false pretenses, calling it one of the worst mistakes he made during the Bush presidency. The president, he adds, did not knowingly mislead the American public about the existence of such weapons. In "Courage and Consequence," Rove argues that history will look favorably ...
