Obamanomics: Mortgage Giants Leave Legal Bills to the Taxpayers Post Date: 2011-01-24 13:02:38 by Happy Quanzaa

Since the government took over Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, taxpayers have spent more than $160 million defending the mortgage finance companies and their former top executives in civil lawsuits accusing them of fraud. The cost was a closely guarded secret until last week, when the companies and their regulator produced an accounting at the request of Congress. The bulk of those expenditures $132 million went to defend Fannie Mae and its officials in various securities suits and government investigations into accounting irregularities that occurred years before the subprime lending crisis erupted. The legal payments show no sign of abating. Documents reviewed by The New York ...
Other people's money pays for your Government Motors Volt Post Date: 2011-01-24 12:46:36 by Happy Quanzaa

U.S. government will buy $7,500 of your Chevy Volt No one has been happy to see the price point of the Chevrolet Volt continue to rise. Initially engineers were pleased to hear that I'd pay as much as $30,000 for the car. Now GM is projecting a cost closer to $40k. That might all change thanks to a bill passed Friday (amid a bunch of other good news for car companies). The Bill gives a tax credit to buyers of plug-in vehicles. Each plug-in automatically gets a $2,500 cut, then you get an additional $417 per kwh for batteries greater than 4 kwh. That works out to $7,500 per Volt, which could push the base price below $30k. The tax credit will only apply to the first 250,000 plug-ins ...
House begins probe into 222 waivers for ObamaCare [Full Thread] Post Date: 2011-01-24 12:40:40 by Happy Quanzaa

Fred Upton proves himself to be a multitasker this week. Earlier today, I wrote about his plan to fight the EPA on the expansion of climate-change regulation, and now Upton has his eyes trained on Health and Human Services. Upton and one of the chairs of his Energy and Commerce subcommittees have launched a probe into the 222 waivers granted by the Obama administration from ObamaCare insurance coverage mandates: One day after the House voted to repeal Obamacare, some lawmakers are turning their attention toward the bureaucracy created by the bill. Reps. Fred Upton, chairman of the Energy and Commerce Committee, and Cliff Stearns, chairman of the Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee, ...
Chicagobama SEIU gets ObamaCare Waiver Post Date: 2011-01-24 12:07:25 by Happy Quanzaa

Three SEIU Locals--Including Chicago Chapter--Waived From Obamacare Requirement (CNSNews.com) Three local chapters of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), whose political action committee spent $27 million supporting Barack Obama in the 2008 presidential election, have received temporary waivers from a provision in the Obamacare law. The three SEIU chapters include the Local 25 in Obamas hometown of Chicago. The waivers allow health insurance plans to limit how much they will spend on a policy holders medical coverage for a given year. Under the new health care law, however, such annual limits are phased out by the year 2014. (Under HHS regulations, annual ...
Maybe We Should Make This Man a U.S. Citizen and Elect Him to Congress Post Date: 2011-01-23 14:24:47 by Capitalist Eric

What we need in America are Statesmen (and women), not politicians. And, while we cant give Mr. Nigel Farage, UKs representative to the EU Parliament, automatic citizenship and then elect him to our Congress, perhaps his words and actions will one day serve as inspiration for the next generation of Americas Congressional representatives. In this short address to the EU Parliament Mr. Farage once again points out how government control of our so-called free market economy leads, not to liberty and happiness for the common man, but rather, chaos, discord and misery for millions. He might as well be speaking to the American people and our own Congress, as it is ...
Hawaii governor claims record of Obama's birth 'exists in archives' but can't produce the vital document ["Birfers" May Be Right... LOL] Post Date: 2011-01-21 19:06:19 by Capitalist Eric

Pressure was mounting on Hawaii Governor Neil Abercrombie today amid increasing confusion over whether President Obama was born there. Abercrombie said on Tuesday that an investigation had unearthed papers proving Obama was born in Hawaii in 1961. He told Honolulu's Star-Advertiser: 'It actually exists in the archives, written down,' he said. But it became apparent that what had been discovered was an unspecified listing or notation of Obama's birth that someone had made in the state archives and not a birth certificate. And in the same interview Abercrombie suggested that a long-form, hospital-generated birth certificate for Barack Obama may not exist within the vital ...
'Vitriolic Rhetoric' vs. Government’s Aggression Post Date: 2011-01-20 17:14:11 by Capitalist Eric

Following the shootings in Arizona by a lunatic, there were calls to "tone down the rhetoric" politically, with references to the past years "vitriolic" anger and activism expressed by many among the Tea Party movement and by those who generally oppose the federal governments agenda. There have been criticisms of "violent metaphors," such as those used by Sarah Palin who was "targeting" various candidates in the November 2010 elections, with bulls-eyes drawn on maps of targeted districts, and so on. Some have criticized the current bill to repeal ObamaCare, because of the repeal bills title, "Repealing the Job-Killing ...
300 mil more tax $s p***ed down the green drain: GA Cellulosic Ethanol Plant Closing Post Date: 2011-01-20 13:38:01 by Happy Quanzaa

A lack of investment capitol is taking its toll on a Georgia cellulosic ethanol plant. According to media reports, the Range Fuels plant in Soperton will temporarily shut down after producing a small quantity of cellulosic ethanol. Range Fuels just announced in August 2010 the successful production of cellulosic methanol using non-food biomass at a Georgia biofuels plant in the first phase of an operation to ultimately produce next generation ethanol. The Colorado-based company received the first ever loan guarantee for a commercial-scale cellulosic ethanol plant from USDA almost exactly two years ago and a grant from the Department of Energy in 2008 with plans to produce cellulosic ...

House passes health law repeal House Republicans passed a bill to repeal President Barack Obamas health care plan Wednesday. | AP Photo House Republicans passed a bill to repeal President Barack Obamas health care plan Wednesday, taking their first major step toward rolling back the massive overhaul that has dominated the American political landscape for almost two years. The vote was 245 to 189, and unanimous GOP opposition gave the vote the same partisan feel of the March vote to pass the law, underscoring once again the hardened political lines of the health care debate. Only three Democrats backed the repeal, a smaller number than Republicans had once predicted. The ...
High-speed rail is a fast way to waste taxpayer money Post Date: 2011-01-19 12:38:13 by Happy Quanzaa

Where can the new Congress start cutting spending? Here's one obvious answer: high-speed rail. The Obama administration is sending billions of stimulus dollars around the country for rail projects that make no sense and that, if they are ever built, will be a drag on taxpayers indefinitely. When incoming Govs. Scott Walker of Wisconsin and John Kasich of Ohio canceled high-speed rail projects, Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood refused to let them spend the dollars on other forms of transportation and sent the funds instead to California and other states. Walker argued that Wisconsin didn't need $810 billion for a 78-mile line between Madison and Milwaukee because there's ...

Hawaii Gov. Neil Abercrombie suggested in an interview published today that a long-form, hospital-generated birth certificate for Barack Obama may not exist within the vital records maintained by the Hawaii Department of Health. Abercrombie told the Honolulu Star Advertiser he was searching within the Hawaii Department of Health to find definitive vital records that would prove Obama was born in Hawaii, because the continuing eligibility controversy could hurt the president's chances of re-election in 2012. Donalyn Dela Cruz, Abercrombie's spokeswoman in Honolulu, ignored again yesterday another in a series of repeated requests made by WND for an interview with the governor. ...

Hated first lady: Rags to riches to running away Tunisian protesters hated their autocratic president -- but it was loathing for his former-hairdresser wife and her greedy family that helped trigger the riots that toppled the government yesterday. Leila Ben Ali, 63 -- mocked as "the Queen of Carthage" -- enjoyed a rags-to-riches story that made her one of the world's most powerful Arab women. She was one of 11 children of a Tunis father who sold nuts for a living. After attending schools in the Tunisian capital, marrying and divorcing her first husband and holding jobs in a hair salon and a travel agency, she met Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, a rising politician and interior ...
The reflexive call for fewer liberties (Free Speech/Press, RKBA) Post Date: 2011-01-15 13:13:08 by Hondo68

William Galston -- former Clinton adviser and current Brookings Institution Senior Fellow -- has a column in The New Republic about the Gabrielle Giffords shooting that illustrates the mentality endlessly eroding basic American liberty: namely, the belief that every tragedy must lead to new government powers and new restrictions on core liberties. The lesson of the Arizona tragedy, he argues, is that it's too difficult to force citizens into mental institutions against their will. This, he says, is the fault of "civil libertarians," who began working in the 1970s on legal reforms to require a higher burden of proof for involuntary ...

WASHINGTON The United States just passed a dubious milestone: Government debt surged to an all-time high, more than $14 trillion. That means Congress soon will have to lift the legal debt limit to give the nearly maxed-out government an even higher credit limit or dramatically cut spending to stay within the current cap. Either way, a fight is ahead on Capitol Hill, inflamed by the passions of tea party activists and deficit hawks. Today's debt level represents a $45,300 tab for each and everyone in the country. Already, both sides are blaming each other for ...

Prosecutors had asked Patrice Tierney be sentenced to two years of probation, with three months in home confinement. Tierney's lawyer asked for straight probation. A U.S. District Court judge said at a Thursday sentencing hearing Tierney should be given jail time as a deterrent. The sentence will be followed by five months of home confinement as part of two years of supervised release. John Tierney is a Democrat who's represented Massachusetts' 6th Congressional District since 1997. He says ...

So just two years after opening a solar energy plant with great fanfare--and even greater state subsidies--the plant is closing and with it 800 jobs reports Todd Wallack of the Boston Globe. Why? calling itself a victim of weak demand and competition from cheaper suppliers in China, where the government provides solar companies with generous subsidies. And speaking of China... Evergreen itself has a factory in Wuhan, China, built in ...

Sanders Fundraises Off Arizona Murders There has been no shortage of individuals and institutions that have sought to capitalize on the shootings in Tucson. Add Vermont senator Bernie Sanders to that list. This afternoon Sanders sent out a fundraising appeal, seeking to raise money to fight Republicans and other right-wing reactionaries responsible for the climate that led to the shooting. He writes: Given the recent tragedy in Arizona, as well as the start of the new Congress, I wanted to take this opportunity to share a few words with political friends in Vermont and throughout the country. I also want to thank the very many supporters who have begun contributing online to ...

AP is reporting that Former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay has been sentenced to three years in prison on conspiracy charges. In November, Delay was also convicted on money laundering charges for violating Texas law when he used corporate donations to support his hand-picked Republican candidates. The punishment could have ranged between probation and at least 10 years in prison, what prosecutors sought. Delay argued that a long sentence is an unacceptable criminalization of politics and is expected to appeal the sentence.

Despite the fact that Jared Lee Loughner was a psychotic loner with left-wing beliefs according to those who knew him, the establishment has hastily exploited yesterdays tragic shooting in Tucson to demonize conservatives, libertarians and gun owners while ordering Americans to tone down the rhetoric, which is nothing more than a euphemism for stifling dissent and coercing people to roll over on Obamacare, bailouts and whatever big government is preparing to unleash next. The nations caustic political climate has become a suspect of sorts in the rampage that left six dead and a lawmaker critically injured in Arizona. Already, appeals are being ...

Rep. David Rivera (R-FL) tried this week to clear up questions about his finances amidst a reported investigation into $500,000 in payments by a dog track (whose cause Rivera supported) to a company owned by his mother and godmother. As the Miami Herald reports, Rivera sold a two-bedroom condo at 8897 Fontainebleau Blvd. to his mother's company just eight days after he was elected to Congress. While Rivera's financial disclosure forms said he made more than $100,000 from the sale of real estate in 2010 (according to the Associated Press), the county said last year the condo was worth only $89,000. Rivera also said in financial disclosures he repaid the $137,000 in undisclosed ...

The U.S. money supply aggregates based on the Austrian definition of the money supply, what Austrians call the True Money Supply or TMS, were mixed in November, with our shorter-term one and three-month rate of change metrics continuing their recent surge while our longer-term twelve-month rate of change metrics showing some moderation. Focusing on TMS2, THE CONTRARIAN TAKEs preferred money supply measure, we find that it increased at an annualized rate of 15.6% in November, bringing the three-month rate of change to an annualized 15.2%. Thats up from Octobers 14.5% rate and 13.3% rate, respectively. In contrast, the twelve-month rate of change metric on TMS2, the measure ...
