Sgt. Aaron Thompson quickly decided to punch his way through the ice to rescue the boy after he crashed through the pond while chasing his dog Christmas evening. A sheriff's deputy in Utah punched his way through a frozen pond on Christmas to save an 8-year-old boy who had fallen through the ice, officials said Tuesday. The little boy was chasing his dog in the Southern Utah town of New Harmony when he ran onto a frozen pond and crashed through the thin ice around 5 p.m., Lt. David Crouse of the Washington County Sheriff's Office said in a statement. The boy had been playing with his siblings and one of the children tried to help him but was unable to pull him out of the water. ...

The 6-year-old boy killed by a stray bullet in a shooting involving Bexar County deputies in Schertz was identified Friday by the Bexar County Medical Examiner's Office. Kameron Prescott was shot in the abdomen and taken to University Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Sheriff Javier Salazar previously said the boy was 7 years old, but the Bexar County Medical Examiner's Office said on Friday that he was actually 6 years old.  Kameron was shot while inside his home in the 100 block of Peach Lane. Four Bexar County deputies had been chasing a wanted felon in the area, and they opened fire on her as she tried to break into Prescott's home. The woman, who has not ...

Four deaths this week have brought the city’s number of murder investigations to 71 this year. With a month to go, it’s the highest number in a single year in recent history. Hannah Glasgow, a spokeswoman for the Albuquerque Police Department, said Thursday that a 17-year-old boy and his friend were shot at in the area of Wyoming and Central on Sunday. The 17-year-old, Donaldo Yañez-Reyes, was hit and died two days later. Glasgow had not provided information about the incident until Thursday afternoon. Also, on Monday, police say, a 20-year-old man fatally stabbed his brother, Dezmond Ravenel, 22, in a southeast Albuquerque apartment. D’Andre Ravenel was arrested ...

Sarah Neeley has replayed the morning of Sept. 9 over and over again in her mind, each time reliving the panic she felt when her 2-year-old son, Becket, was found at the bottom of a friend's pool in West Dundee. While friends called 911, her husband, Robert, pulled the toddler out of the water, and Sarah immediately started performing CPR. She had completed no more than three rescue breaths when officer John Scheffler ran into the backyard, scooped up Becket and rendered techniques that helped save his life. Scheffler, a 20-year veteran with the West Dundee Police Department, was honored during a village board meeting Monday for his quick response and deep concern for Becket, now 3, ...

Morganfield Police Officer, Eric McCallister, walked into his job at the Morganfield Police Department like any other day on Saturday morning, November 25. McCallister was in the middle of being briefed by the third shift officer when a call came in over the radio. There was a suicidal subject in Whispering Meadows. The location of this call would normally be handled only by the sheriff's office since it is outside the jurisdiction for the police department, but there is certain criteria that can be met for a police officer to go out of jurisdiction. Since the call was over a suicidal subject, the protocol is to have two officers to back each other up in case there is a firearm or the ...

Albuquerque, New Mexico (CNN)Police officers will often tell you there's no such thing as a routine call when you're patrolling the streets. But when Albuquerque police officer Ryan Holets responded to a possible theft at a nearby convenience store, it had all the hallmarks of a mundane assignment he could quickly clear from the call log. It didn't turn out that way. As Ryan left the convenience store on September 23, he noticed out of the corner of his eye a couple sitting on the grass against a cement wall. It appeared the man and woman were shooting up heroin in broad daylight behind the convenience store. Ryan turned on his body camera and approached the couple but he ...

Local churches, Black Lives Matter and the Chicago Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression will block stores along Michigan Avenue and prevent customers from entering stores for the second year in a row, reports Crain’s Chicago Business. A big part of the protest is to force on people that it’s important to shop at businesses that aren’t owned by white men, Kimberly Veal, a leader of Black Lives Matter, said. In a rare move, the NYPD will internally try two Brooklyn cops accused of raping a prisoner — before their criminal trial takes place, the Daily News has learned. Police Officers Edward Martins and Richard Hall are charged with raping and kidnapping an 18-year-old woman they picked up for drug possession in Brooklyn on Sept. 15. Martins, 37, and Hall, 32, who have already been demoted from the rank of detective, say they had consensual sex with the teenager. Typically, the NYPD holds off on taking disciplinary action until the conclusion of any criminal proceeding. That's done because when a cop is grilled by Internal Affairs, they are compelled to answer all questions under ...

A jail that for more than two decades drew international attention for its gimmicks and the camera-ready sheriff had no such fanfare in its twilight hours.   Tent City, Maricopa County’s infamous outdoor jail, quietly closed for business this weekend. Its remaining inmates were taken from the 7-acre compound in southwest Phoenix late Saturday night and checked into the county's Durango Jail a few blocks away.  Tent City was the brainchild of former Sheriff Joe Arpaio, who opened it in 1993 to combat overcrowding in brick-and-mortar facilities. The tents have drawn controversy since their inception. Polly Trottenberg, the city’s transportation commissioner and a board member of the MTA, says even board members don’t know exactly what they’re for. “A lot of the board members felt they didn’t have all the details they would have wanted, myself included,” ...

The near-universal outrage surrounding the arrest of Alex Wubbels, the Salt Lake City nurse who was arrested July 26 for refusing to let police officers draw blood from an unconscious crash victim, empowered Wubbels and her attorney to threaten legal action against the police on CNN’s “New Day” on Monday. At the very least, Wubbels says, she’d like to “re-educate” the police department on proper procedure. Prospective students are advised to steer clear of Wubbels’ courses. Despite reams of inaccurate reporting on the incident, Wubbels was likely legally wrong to obstruct the police officer. The case is a much closer one than it appears. In a widely-seen ...
